[GB] Decked Out
« on: Wed, 06 August 2014, 13:40:42 »
DISCLAIMER: I am not affiliated with this person or buy; I just saw it on PMK, wanted it, and want it to be cheaper.

This is a great color way and I haven't seen anyone promote it here yet so I'm making this thread.

DESIGNED BY: JAYFID [if you have a GH account step up. :)]

Good to know it may have some decent traction if the reddit community is interested.

I realize its going off topic but whats to stop someone from taking the mockups from a group buy someone has ran here and just re-running it? OR stopping SP from just going full on production and selling the most 'popular' keysets they make for group buys?

Yeah this is complete rip off of hyperfuse.

Not sure if github would like their logo being sold on a product either.

traditionally it has been my experience that sp is pretty good about making people seek permission before using other peoples legends and stuff

the only thing he has changed from hyperfuse here is the legend colour on just the alphas, but then he even used the same purple for accent colours on the wasd packs lol

I was JUST looking at that image of hyperfuse and comparing the sets.
I already have DSA hyper so this will compliment it nicely.
Don't want to step on anyone's toes, just wanted exposure so I don't pay an arm and a leg.

Edit: I wonder if SP is aware of octocat? or if github let reddit use it?

no, but ill start a pissing match because someone has copied my original IP and run around the internet talking about how they designed it, as well as using copyright protected images that it explicitly says they cant use or even change the colour of if they even had permission

what it comes down to, is we are a small community and things tend to be done on a level of respect, or with a wink  and a handshake, with the understanding that although we may not legally protect ourselves, we dont just rip each other off, huge amounts of time and money goes in to this stuff

I think the green is more green than teal, and I think the gray is darker.
I'll concede it is very similar. I've asked for color codes on PMK.
However, the mods between hyper, midnight, and this are all one shade off as far as I'm concerned.
Two-tone gray and a third accent color is a whole lot of sets.
I think it is very similar, but not identical.
Waiting on color codes to find out.

edit: still want to know what my joke was.

Nope, alpha colors are different. As far as I can tell both use SP's of-the-shelf font & colors, can the combination be (c) ? If so, I see a lot of problems coming up in the future..

[Edit] Ah, thanks for the clarification Bunny. Going to check the reddit links, curious how that was unfolding.

Probably best I stay out of this, I don't play on getting this (DSA ew) and BunnyLake has been awesome to me as far as customer service/hooking me up with keysets. Although I will say I think it has enough of a variation in color that it is not a clear rip-off of Hyperfuse (more of a homage to keysets like it) and is distinct enough to where I believe it's not a copy. Perhaps the WASD add-ons and GitHub logo crossed the line however, and that's worth bringing attention to.

edit: still want to know what my joke was.

I actually thought it was HyperFuse at first, I had to do a double take.

Realforce EK45 (Silenced)  |  Realforce 87UW (45g)  |  Realforce 87UWS (Variable)
Filco MJ2 TKL (Cherry Clears)  |  Phantom 87 (78g Gateron Clears)  |  Phantom 86 (67g Zealios)

Ugh guess I bit the hand that feeds :(

It's hard to determine the exact color used with just a color picker, but as others mentioned it seems like a slightly different tint/shade for all colors. The inspiration for the set was clearly Hyperfuse, GMK Dolch and maybe Calm Depths/Midnight and from my perhaps naive perspective it seems like this set was just trying to pick and choose the best from all those, to create a 'decked out' version, which I don't know if that can be considered a direct copy based on those similarities. I can understand it being an infringement of your designs, enough people have stated they thought it was Hyperfuse that it could very well be deemed a ripoff and not something SP should have allowed.

I hope he had named it as Hypermerge. No point doing obvious rip-offs if you don't have obvious rip-off name for it.

In the original reddit thread, he comments several times that he was influenced by:

"It's definitely based on some of my favorite DSA keysets, including hyperfuse, dolch, etc"

http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/27xnxt/interest_check_for_a_sp_dsa_groupbuy_design/ci5dz5u

He also mentions that:

"It's basically what you said. Dolch and hyperfuse are my favorite keysets and I heavily based this on those."

http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/27xnxt/interest_check_for_a_sp_dsa_groupbuy_design/ci5foio

Even more:

"There's really more influence from Dolch/Granite/Hyperfuse. However, when you're laying out a 4 color set with large centered legends, there's going to be some similarity with most existing sets."

http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/28w5fw/update_the_keyset_i_posted_a_few_days_ago_is_back/cif7wle

And lastly, in response to this comment:

"looks too much like hyperfuse for it to really take off."

He acknowledges and comments on the similarity:

"I actually disagree. I really like hyperfuse, and it was one of the keysets that inspired me to put this together, but the hyperfuse set just isn't readily available anymore. One of my goals was to make something for people who like certain things like hyperfuse/DSA/high contrast designs but can't actually get anything like that."

http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/287jh0/interest_check_group_buy_got_a_good_response_a/ci86kd3

---

Personally, I don't think it's a knockoff of Hyperfuse. Rather, I see it as a hybrid of Hyperfuse and Dolch. I like the green color (my suggestion in the original thread!), which I feel reminds me of the old "terminal green" on Linux machines.

Lastly, it's hilarious that people are emailing Github for "copyright" issues, when seemingly, nobody has a problem with the Darth Vader Clacks. Bunnylake, have you snitched on ClackFactory to 20th Century Fox/Disney for copyright violations of the Darth Vader design? Have you written an email to Nintendo regarding the aluminum Pokemon keycaps? To Warner Bros regarding the V for Vendetta caps? If you haven't... then why do you take such umbrage here? To me, using the Github logo isn't much different than any of the other instances of keycaps inspired by popular culture. If you're going to peeved about this, than why not be peeved at the other instances?

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=59993.0

People seem really salty today, but personally, I think it's a nice set.

i think you interpret that very differently to me, the way i feel, saying you are inspired by something, doesnt give you free reign to mimic it, the fact is, he is in breach of our community unregistered design rights and claiming he designed something he didnt

with regards to the github logo, much like he ripped me off, he has done the same to them, and its just another reason this buy shouldnt exist, i dont know why you bring up other makers, if they wanna use copyrighted work, that is up to them, if those companies wish to pursue the issue, that is also up to them, those companies have the right to pursue their properties, but we our simply taking a stand with ours

this happening, legitimately hurts [CTRL]ALTS future plans, we are about to launch hyperfuse with gmk as well as having plans to do another round of hyperfuse with sp shortly, as has been commented in other sections of this subforum, its hard enough getting buys to moq as it is, without people taking our designs and claiming it as their own

Ugh. That definitely will hurt [CTRL]ALT's buys. However, if we can keep this peaceful, I'm sure the much larger GH community will rally around you rather than this dude's set.

Because you are not associated with Github, yet went out of your way to inform them. Yet, I don't see you expending the same effort with the other companies. That's my point. It doesn't seem like you really care about copyright at all, but simply being vindictive here.

This set is similar to Hyperfuse as Pepsi is to Coke, as Mr. Pibb is to Dr. Pepper. That is to say, I really don't think he stole any of your work. Maybe inspired by it, but I see enough difference. Like another user said, the green reminds me of a retro command line. My opinion is that he did not mimic Hyperfuse, but formed somewhat of a hybrid with Dolch.

That said, I don't think I'll change your opinion. I guess the market will decide.

Bunny went through the trouble to ask Github for permission and use it in a set. Then some twat comes along and uses it because "this is the internet".
As he has told you before, Marvel never came down on the Ironman caps because they either didn't know or didn't care.
But why do you think there are no Batman keysets? Because somebody did ask and the owner of that logo said NO.
Notice how the Apple logo is missing from the OS pack?

Bunny runs a business. And as [CTRL]ALT he has the right to press the issue.
A Pepsi and Coke comparison is wrong because they you cannot copyright a recipe. They could have patented it but that would have meant all the ingredients were available for all to see after 25 years. But rest assured if another Cola company would come along and use their logo that they would and have cracked down on them.

In the end part of this issue is solved, because the Github logo and Code key has disappeared from the set.
It is still bad form and hurts Bunny's business, especially when he had plans to do a rerun of the set in the near future. Spin it whatever way you want multiple similar sets running at the same time means MOQ is harder to meet.

Which profile will it be?

Last time I only ordered DCS, but right now I also kinda want a DSA version.

Not to mention that I already put money aside for Hyperfuse GMK :p

Help me out... I'm having a hard time understanding this part.  You picked 4 colors out of a ring of 150, no?  Would you take all the paint at the paint store as well, because, hey, it's your design?  This seems petty, and a little immature.

The github thing (assuming this other guy did not get permission), that's different.  But colors don't make for "design rights", especially stock ones.

From a legal point of view you're probably right, but this is about morality within the community.

Bunny - a community member - came up with this color combination and that's why he should have the "right" to this set.

At least that's my opinion on the matter...

Pretty much this.

Really, start a pissing match just because the color scheme is similar ?

no, but ill start a pissing match because someone has copied my original IP and run around the internet talking about how they designed it, as well as using copyright protected images that it explicitly says they cant use or even change the colour of if they even had permission

what it comes down to, is we are a small community and things tend to be done on a level of respect, or with a wink  and a handshake, with the understanding that although we may not legally protect ourselves, we dont just rip each other off, huge amounts of time and money goes in to this stuff

Respect goes both ways. I would take it up with the person themselves in private instead of derailing someones thread.

Hmm. I had no idea this set was causing so much controversy over here. I have been pining for a legended DSA set suitable for my home dox for months now and this set looked like just the thing (especially with these colors). Too bad about the github key - I would have really liked one of those. If the gb fails I guess I will have to wait for another legended DSA set to come around.

I bought this.
I own multiple sets of granite.
I own Hyperfuse.
I'm buying every DSA cause I like them, and I like having different color combinations.
IMO there should be MORE similar keysets to make mixing and matching easier,
leaving us with more pretty, diverse, and personal keyboards.

I think some people have a right to take things seriously when they invest 10's of thousands of dollars and countless hours of their time to run their own group buys versus just simply picking some cute colors and submitting mockups to signature plastics to run.

When you invest 10's of thousands of $$$ you are running a business and not a hobby/passion (nobody is a saint, and does that for non profit, be it financial or other type, yes even fame is profit), in that case copyright your effen work, protect it, don't expect others not to use when there is no legal obligation not to do it.
Anyway I'm only ******** on others work so I'm a neglectable quantity that will be forgotten soon, so what do I care.

I'm sorry that the guy running this GB raised the MOQ  when he was so close to have a successful GB, too bad, now his chances are smaller... Wish him luck :thumb:

And one more thing, even if they don't invest shed loads of money people still work hard for designs, there were more than just a few sets which involved a lot of hard work and time spent for an original design and for no profit more than a free set.... Running a GB on PMK is not just picking colors, and if we are at picking colors I could name 3 famous sets outside PMK that are just colorways of the same set plus some novelty keys.
If a colorway becomes a patent then it is a sad world.....with this attitude we should not have any Dolch, Olivette and so on....

Just a caveat : I'm not finger pointing nobody here....

But that is why the more experienced people are here, to teach them and help them to improve the design. One example is the Green Tea set that now evolved to an amazing set, just 2 colors mixed but what colors  :thumb: This is the role of a community.

For ****ty designs there is natural selection, it works so good there is no need to worry about them, just having a look at the PMK site proves that natural selection works without any effort.
But, if you have marketing skills ..... in that case you can induce mass hysteria and sell anything and get the seal of aproval of the masses as ultimate master, people will not even notice that they buy the same thing over and over again but in different shades

Idk. Literally every set that is a doubleshot inverse set [mods one color, alphas other, and legends inverted] is uncreative.
Does that mean they look bad? No, not at all.
Off the top of my head, Raindrop, Toxic,  and Miami all done by Bunny.
Green Tea was just mentioned as well.
And I thought of Nostalgia while typing this.
Nearly any two colors would look good in this way.
It's simply capturing the mood of the keyboard market.
I believe timing with other GBs plays less of a role than people think.

I personally won't be ordering a set, as I'm saving up for the GMK HyperFuse set, but the entire point of PMK seems to be to facilitate that type of buy, removing the vast majority of the difficulties that previous group buys may have experienced. This doesn't take away from the quality and reputation that CTRLALT's buys seem to be known for though.

They certainly have a right to take it seriously, but to bring it to a point of IP legality seems a bit much. It's obvious that the set is heavily influenced by HyperFuse, but has enough variation as far as coloring and typesetting to be a derivative and not purely a clone.

Strong words (or actions) for someone with only one post.

I though having two accounts was forbidden by ToS?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
