KeyCon 2016 will take place in Chicago
KEYCON!!
If you are unfamiliar with KeyCon, check out KeyCon 2015 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=172.0) and previous (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=169.0) events (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=150.0) for reference.
Location, date, and all other details are currently TBD. I have created this thread/board as a place to discuss potential options and ideas. It will be vital to have a local to the determined location take over planning and logistical responsibilities, so keep this in mind when choosing locations.
In the past we have had KeyCons in Chicago, San Jose, and Chicago.
Now let's make this happen! KeyCon is a load of fun. :)
Let`s do something in the southeast, if there are enough clackers this way. I'd love to attend. =)
EDIT: FLFisherman beat me to it.
I nominate Austin, TX. There are several GH'ers local to there who would probably be willing to help organize.

Hoof you beat me to the punch. I definitely think a diff spot would be tight. TX sounds good. FL only if we all go to Harry Potter world after
I would nominate Colorado but there's only a few of us out here (but we have the monopoly on crumpage with meeba).
Our weather is a whole lot less extreme than Texas though! Plus other more favorable laws

Let's do this right...destination keycon. Let's all meet in Tokyo ^_^
I'm throwing my vote in the ring for Nashville, TN. There's plenty of Clackers here and I'm near positive that Mashby and I could coordinate something on a large scale.

Welp this looks like it's going to be too far west for my participation, unless somebody wants to pick me up for a road trip.

I'm in Miami. I rarely go so far as Key West, but I think it's a good, touristy place to visit for those coming from out of town.

I agree. My brother went to Dive Instructor school in Marathon. I used to go down there, key largo, & key west to go diving frequently.

Everybody with suggestions for locations keep in mind that we need a local organizer that can take the reins and lead the planning/organizing of this event. You don't want me booking a room in the ghetto cause I don't know the city. ;)What's wrong with ghetto? The benefits of the social experience in the ghetto might be worth it.

I vote chiraq
East Coast please!
To summarize what I've seen so far:
- Confirmed potential organizers (+ attendees) in Chicago (i3), Nashville (mashby/Incredi), and presumably Asheville (LSB)
- Lots of interest for Austin, Bay Area, and NE coast, no organizers yet
- Divided interest in Florida between Orlando area and South FL
I have to say New York City for obvious reasons :))
However I will throw my vote in with Nashville. We could airbnb an entire house 30 min outside the city for cheap and make that Keycon central. I did this last year for a different event and it was the best thing ever.

This is a cool idea! ^^^^
I like Nashville because it's close! :))
If traveling is involved, my vote would be Colorado
+1 for NYC/East Coast
Travelling wouldn't be such a big deal if I wasn't getting married this year.

@Retrochick and I both agree Asheville is where it needs to be.

We could do Louisville. It's a great little city, and it's in bourbon country!

More breweries than anywhere else in the country in Asheville.
Also TONS of stuff to do if we make a weekend of it. Biltmore estate home and vineyard tours, brew tours, the downtown is extremely walkable with lots of coffee houses, book stores, art stores, RECORD STORES (Harvest Records is legendary).
There are also lots of cheap hotels to rent. Another very easy way to handle housing would be to rent cabins in groups, this would be quite cheap if 8 or so people shacked up in a Cabin. For the NC meetup that is more or less already planned for Ashville around the same time we were already planning on doing this.
@Retrochick and I both agree Asheville is where it needs to be.I've got family in Asheville, so I'd support that notion. And as you mentioned, beer and vinyl. While bourbon is great, beer lends itself better to tours and general drinking comradery
All of this talk of places that aren't Austin. Pls return the conversation to Austin. Thank you.Honestly it seems to be the only logical choice. :P
Depending on when it's scheduled for, chitown should be getting a second Portillos in MayThere was a Portillos <5 min from last year's venue.

Ha! That's the one we go to all the time!
As a south loop resident, most looking forward to the new one, but always used to go to Vernon hills one. We also have best hot dogs and pizza in Chicago
Nashville and Asheville are going to split the vote pretty hard. This election is rigged!
It's always in Chicago -.-
It's always in Chicago -.-
And as much as Chicago is great for me, I like to travel and see other places. Swapping over to CA two years ago was awesome.
Depending on how fast the gh60 group buy gets wrapped up by the volunteers, maybe a station could be set aside for people willing to assemble a few boards? perhaps even an artisan/novelty raffle for the helpers if a maker feels so inclined (please).

I've always been against this kinda stuff at Keycon. Isn't fair for the person(s) providing services imo. Even if it's 2 days, there's not a lot of time for playing with keyboards, talking, and presentations as we've seen in the past. I'm also strongly in favor of the idea that if you're buying custom mechanical keyboards, you should be able to build your own boards. But that's just my opinion.

Good opinion and observation.
Frankly it really matters where people can find a reasonable place to set up a large conference room/hall. Space is so important at these events.
I could most likely get a room for free in Indianapolis if there was interest there from iupui. It's close enough to Chicago that is shouldn't take away from the people wanting to go. The downside is Indianapolis is (kind of) boring.
51% for Chicago, come on, people, vote Florida.

So far Nashville has Booper and Taylor Swift, but more votes are going to Chicago? Pfft.

Edit: Wait, why only three? Shouldn't this effectively just be a tally of everyone that can attend each given location? If I am able to attend all of them, why wouldn't we want to know this?

2 polls? One where you pick all you can attend, one where you choose preference? MORE WORK FOR THE MODS
Can only have one poll per thread. :( But maybe we could just make a bunch of threads in this subforum solely for the purpose of polls. :))
Wait... didn't we decide on Nashville already?
I suggest the direct center of the united states. We can gather in a corn field. Someone bring a table.(http://infocusfilmcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/children-of-the-corn-original-e1377313228675.jpg)

I can edit it but I don't want to just come busting in and over-rule your stuff, man. Figured I'd bring it up as a proper discussion point.
If we hold it in Chicago, Glorious Leader can lead us in the most efficient and tastiest GB R2 that Geekhack has ever seen. Anyone else dreaming about that Giordano's from last year? :))

Or you guys can turn to the light and vote for florida. :-*
My family is staying with some extended family right now because we don't even have a house. Would offer if I could, life is in constant turmoil at the moment. :))Hmm I can find a cheap ass flight round trip from Florida to Chicago for like $120...Just need to find some cheap places to stay for my broke ass.

although I might have to bow that best find to CBA for chinatown. We'll have to make it there earlier next time.

It was downtown, after we all sat down, my wife looked at CBA's plate and immediately had buyers remorse.
If this thing is held in Chicago and I get shot while I'm there, everyone who voted for it better chip in for my hospital bills... :))

No matter where it is, I really hope I'll be able go this year.I think people started arriving Thursday night or Friday morning and the last people left later on Sunday.
How long did everyone stick around and hang out for in the past events?

It seems "Other" Is getting quite a lot of votes, maybe we should compile the top two places and vote for them, and see what the concensus is.No matter where it is, I really hope I'll be able go this year.
This is one of the big reasons im hoping for Nashville (or somewhere close). I highly doubt I will have the funds to make it if its outside of the southeast

But Atlanta is like the unhappy compromise between Nashvegas and Theme Park/Beach land.

Yeah that wouldn't be enough advanced notice for most people to plan a trip anyway. For me it will have to be before my wife's due date in August.

depending on Phoenix location, I could likely swing this. I know some people out there and theyve told me I always have a room if Im in town.
Some of you people that voted for "Other" need to get some organizers to step up so we don't have this in Chicago two years in a row. Again, nothing wrong with Chicago, it was a lovely Con, but variety.
Nashville midsummer would be perfect IMO :thumb:

So chicago it is? A new hobby and a wife who very does not understand. Gotta to keep it local.Chicago is an easy one to swing to my lady probably
I would nominate Colorado but there's only a few of us out here (but we have the monopoly on crumpage with meeba).
Our weather is a whole lot less extreme than Texas though! Plus other more favorable laws
There really does not seem to be a consensus here, with "Other" leading the vote with only 27% of the vote. And Chicago not far ahead of 2nd and 3rd.

We should probably pick the top tree locations at this point and start a new vote

Oh good, we've become as corrupt as FIFA. Quite an achievement! Geekhack is now a regular good ole boys club. Break out the cigars!
Vegas, anyone? I can't be the only who likes keyboards and gambling ;D

I lose enough money in keyboards already, no need to lose more gambling.
Cool
Can the SF Bay Area still be an option ;)+1
Apparently it's possible to get a tour of Cherry in Germany (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=80942.msg2121274#msg2121274). Or GMK. Either way, Keycon should obviously go there.

I would definitely be up for that. Are we talking a straight transfer, or are you asking for more $$ than the GB? ...Ill PM you.Straight transfer I'm no punk. :-) I did purchase two colors. Glitch3d should hopefully be able to sort it out.

Yes.
I nominate Austin, TX. There are several GH'ers local to there who would probably be willing to help organize.

Sounds like someone needs to step up if this is going to happen.I nominate Austin, TX. There are several GH'ers local to there who would probably be willing to help organize.
Austin!
Have any of them actually spoken up with the interest of organizing?
**and me, not and I. That would have driven me crazy if I didn't fix it, sorry. :eek:Found another reason to like you two xD
Austin would be plausible for Kudos and I, possibly. Throwing that out there. ;)I could do Austin as well. Or LA or SF bay area.

Man I'll say it again, I would love for it to be Austin! Especially if it means Kudos and Koala can join in!

Chicago never gets anything good. I am so down for this to be in Chicago.
Oh, and apparently this has been in Chicago twice before? If only I were into keyboards two years ago :(
Haven't most of the KeyCons been here?
I nominate Boston for selfish reasons, otherwise I think Vegas would be a great option and would like to see it a possibility.
Can the SF Bay Area still be an option ;)
We're going to run out of 2016 before we figure this out. :p

This.
Since there is no general consensus, take all of the cities, put them in an RNG calculator and pick one. It's clear the forum isn't going to pick a city any time soon, and the longer we wait the less people will be able to come do to too short of a notice.

Hoof you beat me to the punch. I definitely think a diff spot would be tight. TX sounds good. FL only if we all go to Harry Potter world after
I forget that people actually visit Florida just for the theme parks. That's a great suggestion!
I executive decision Harry Potter world then. If this happens in SoCal, we could go to Disneyland and Harry Potter land. I'm really good at acting like a child. And semi good at playing keyboards. Plus I could see if my alohamora charm is as good as my mommy says it is.
If I might offer a suggestion: expand the poll to include the names of the areas included in "Other" if possible. It might be useful to give people an idea of which locations are gaining traction. Or give them ideas about convenient locations they haven't thought of. Personally, I'm still for Chicago, but it'd be fair either way.
The problem is that none of the "other" locations have volunteers to organize the actual event. :-/ Until people step up to help organize, we only really have the four options.
Chicago again... I'll pass. :(:(

Chicago is the easier option, I feel. Discussion is taking place to gauge feasibility and likelihood of Chicago vs Nashville, so stay tuned.

I've talked to i3oilermaker and if there is actual interest we can start working on planning a Chicago Keycon. Honestly at this point this thread really isn't getting anywhere.
I'm down for Chicago if we can actually start planning, we'll be here forever if we don't pick one.
Chicago, even though it's been done a few times before, seems to be the best bet.
Agreed on all this. It was a blast the last few times and I look forward to Galloping Ghosts again :D.

Still haven't been there, and just found out they found yet another rare arcade machine.
EXECUTIVE DECISION
KeyCon 2016 will take place in Chicago
i3oilermaker will be planning and coordinating the event just like last year. I will let him take over from here on out, but some high level info right off the bat is that we will likely be charging a small venue fee and the timing will be Aug/Sept with a heavy push for August due to school schedules and the like. :thumb:

I was hoping for Nashville myself, but Chicago is the right choice this year. Next year we'll need to get started sooner and pick someplace new. :D
Not going to be able to make it to Chicago. Hope everyone has a good time.

Now that location has been decided, Would it be worth it to spin off a new thread for actual events planning and scheduling? Compartmentalize info to make it easier to find.
How do people usually organize after-events? Would love to join a group going to Galloping Ghost.
Would that be discussed here or a different thread?
Chicago eh? I would possibly be able to make it depending on when it happened.
Is KeyCon usually a weekend thing or longer?
So Chicago's been decided? I'm excited :D

Not sure why the old poll is still open but a new one will be started soon to figure out how many people plan on attending Keycon now that Chicago has been chosen.

We should give a few date options for people to select attendance prospects for. Maybe throw out every weekend in August? Late July - early September?

It is still visible when browsing the forum on *most* mobile devices in-browser. It will not be visible on Tapatalk.
Do we have any details yet? It's already getting close to a month out which means its slowly becoming more and more difficult for people from out of town to make plans, buy plane tickets, and hotels.
What is the date? I still see the poll

I don't know if that's decided. JQ asked for a poll so he could make some plans, I haven't heard any news on that. If it gets to the point where I just get us *something*, it'll be the weekend of Sept 16-18, as that's both the most responded weekend and furthest out.
I'm going to talk with work about the possibility to use the downtown space (and I'll be promptly laughed at if I would guess), but if it helps the Palatine parks have their rooms starting at $17/hr and going up from there, depending on what we think we need. (Looking at Falcon Park Rec Center).
Other ideas might be just to grab a library meeting room - usually they allow for free / cheap rental of the space depending on the location and whatnot. http://www.chipublib.org/faqs/whic-cpl-locations-have-meeting-rooms/

I work at the CPL- specifically at Sulzer. I'm the guy on the top floor with the HHKB  If anyone here needs more information about renting out their space (a pretty great space if you ask me) let me know, I can try and help out. I think keeping the location in the city proper is best (more to do, less of a commute, etc). I would also recommend the northside in general because it's a good medium point between being in a nice area and not being too expensive like downtown usually is.
Cheers

Yeah last year we did it in Skokie which seemed to work out well enough. It would be nice to do it downtown but the issue is cost. My work is in the Northbrook + Merch Mart there but it's a M-F thing so the idea of weekend is hard, but second as we are a badge access facility, so two big strikes that would have to be passed through prior to it being an option. the CPL would be perfect for the specific fact that they (usually) allow for free/cheap usage of the facilities. We are still far enough out that it should be mostly possible to go that route.
The other option would be doing what we attempted last year and try to find a computer club of some kind at one of the colleges in the loop and try to get space from them, as they get a cool event and we get free space in prime locations.
The one weekend in the year I hoped it wouldn't be. Oh well, here's to next year!
:'( :'( :'(
Really considering attending this year, what are some highlights of past year events?
If you are unfamiliar with KeyCon, check out KeyCon 2015 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=172.0) and previous (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=169.0) events (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=150.0) for reference.

Keyboards? Bleh.
Sounds like a good time. How many people attended? Are spouses welcome?
For people going to keycon, would there be interest in joining a small groupbuy for flashcarts from krikzz.com to be distributed in person at the con? https://krikzz.com/store/ If we reach $800 in orders, 20% discount applied to everything and free shipping (mix and match, we don't have to order just 1 type of cart) https://krikzz.com/store/content/8-wholesale-orders
I'm based in the loop, and am going to attend if the keycon happens.
Any progress on finding a date or a place?
keycon 2017 in florida?
That's what I voted for when the poll was up...keycon 2017 in florida?
It would have my vote ;D
Can i get some sort of confirmation, i am from the St. Paul area and would love to drive down to Chicago for this event. Can some one please confirm date and time and venue?
Thanks

Didn't even know this occurred. Anyways, I think the keyboard culture has become big enough to spread into regional cultures with more regular meetups, rather than the necessity of a big national meetup to garner interest. I consider that a good thing, as enthusiasts can meet with other enthusiasts locally and regularly.
Or maybe we have become more immersed in Internet culture rather than actually interacting with real people.

You're right, local regular meetups is the better way of doing it. That being said I thing a huge national meetup would be awesome.

6 people? What has been the biggest keycon in the past? Surely there is usually more people and this year has just been bad timing? There are usually more people at small local keyboard meetupsThis years was initially planning for it looked like 40-50 like last year, but with the delay out of summer and last minute plans it shrank.
