I know new legends are $45 but new molds are considerably more expensive and would be required for this. That being said I love scoops and am interested.

Scoops are when there's no raised part of the key, rather the curve of the keytop is more concave than the others. Original Cherry keys have scoops.

I like the way scoops hug my index fingers while they're resting on the home row. :) But as danielucf said, don't know if SP would be willing to make new molds just for this.

I've spoken with SP about various ideas at different times. They qouted me $700-1200 per mold depending on complexity and size. As long as there is no technical reason preventing them to be made I don't see why not as long as funds can be raised. I would be more interested in having new molds made to replace thier heinous bottom row on DCS however. I think these 2 things really should be done if Cherry replica doubleshots are ever to be made. Would be nice to get that much closer instead of halfassing it.

I like scoops.

I thought I read that new molds were about $4500 each. Maybe that was just for 7bit's spherical spacebar. But if there is enough interest, we can get it done. i3oilermaker did just that with the center stemmed stepped caps lock.

I have scoops on my cherry caps and I hate them.  Not enough of a difference for me to easily find the home keys.  They are nice and smooth, though.  I think my favorite is the center bump on old WYSE, which is even more noticeable than the more usual bar on the bottom of most modern keys.  Of course I'd probably cave and buy a set of new scoops anyway, just to have them ready in case I learn to like them.

If we pay for the mold, technically wouldn't the mold be ours?

SP would need to ask us before they can use it fore one of their products, correct?

right, but if the mould was being cast for a new shape of cap, wouldn't it make more economic sense to allow for all the row's to be done? Or isn't that possible with how keys are produced (I have no idea).

What you need to do is make a group buy for the scooped F and J keys, and split the tooling cost between all the participants.

No, it's not possible.  Each row has a different mold for 1x keys. (and then a different mold for keys with the nub/nipple/whatever).

Scoop all the sets!!

I'm worried if there is anything special or different involved with double shooting with a scoop key. If you look at the underside of Cherry F and J keys you can tell that the insert with the legend is different from any of their other double shots. But if SP says they can do it then I'd hope they realize the legend to fit inside it would also have to conform to the scoop shape.

I'm all in for supporting this, hopefully there's enough people so that the mold price can be shared reasonably... Great point about the Cherry Replica though - scoops will mean that those sets will be even closer to the original.

Scoop all the sets!!

This is a good point... Surely Melissa factored in the cost of the first shot mold into that price?

I don't really think we need to do Cherry replicas for these, for the same reason there was no option for Cherry replica off center stepped caps lock. There are already plenty of them available.

Love this, let's do it.  A group buy for F/J keys from recent sets seems like a good idea to cover the cost.

My thumbs also love the idea of re-doing the bottom row at some point in the future.

Blue lettering on grey cap? Like the cherry replica GB?
Or Blue on black.
Are you talking about WYSE?

I don't really think we need to do Cherry replicas for these, for the same reason there was no option for Cherry replica off center stepped caps lock. There are already plenty of them available.

Yeah, what I meant was the tool would come in handy for when the Cherry Replica sets start to get made, so that they can include scoops too. Everyone who has original Cherry sets already has scoops :)

+1 for a new bottom-row, but that's another project altogether.

I'm not partaking as I already have all the cherry caps I want, along with original scoops.

I will however, do a little fundraiser to help you all pay for the mold, I've been dying to do a cherry fundraiser for ages!

WYSE is dark blue on grey, with SP font. The Cherry Replica Blue on Grey by imsto had a different blue and grey than WYSE.

In order to save in cost Shouldn't we all compromise on the same font and color?

The mold cost will be the main brunt of it, which will be shared across all orders. The point of this project is to provide a scoop version of F & J for all of the SP-made set group buys in the past :)

but wouldn't it cost a lot if we had to get one of each mold for all of the sets that we have bought?(as I read each new font needs a new mold). I would be fine with basic White on Black if it would help us save on the cost of multiple molds. I wouldn't even mind blanks. As long as if I get the feel of the caps.

I am very fond of the Cherry color"Royal Blue on Grey"

Yes because all of the past sets from SP have had the same legends (at least as far as the alphas go) - SP's standard font, which is also WYSE font. It's just a matter of making the different colour combinations to match.

HELL YES!
Count me in, I LOVE the scoops on my Cherry Dye Subs.

What about sharing the 2500$ cost per participant? That would encourage taking more keys a bit more, and hence result in a somewhat cheaper price. It’s still quite much though …
Anyway, I’m definitely in for at least 2 white on black sets.

I'll be honest with you, I don't think I've ever seen a set of Cherry DS's I'm interested in. Blasphemy I know. But I don't really see how they differ from the SP Valentine's set or the Filco stock caps besides being vintage. And I don't really like any of the color schemes. Unless those grey alpha-numerics with blue modifiers is a Cherry set.

I'm gonna have to desolder another 7 POS boards (that's 840 switches) to keep up with the brown switch demand because of all the custom keyboards coming out...

How much would a full TKL-set cost?

I have full sets for sale right now. I have never offered TKL. "AKIMbO kits" (TKL with some relegendables) are sold out. You could always buy a full set and sell the numpad.

So which one of you is gonna buy that set of F and J scoops from the grab pile?

Max, I would throw in $10 with my order to help with the mold costs. But I'd be way more comfortable with $5.

Oh, if it's per set I'd prefer to pay $5 max then. Be more comfortable with $2-3 since I think I'll be ordering multiple sets. A little unclear as to how many colorways are going to be offered though. If there are multiple colorways to match multiple sets, then it'd be better if the added cost per set was lower. If there's only one color way, then I'd be happy to pay $5.

Just FYI, I've found that Melissa has scoops onsite from their G81-3000 caps that they sell. We don't need to send her one after all.

Gotcha. Well I know personally I've got three keycap sets that I'd like to have scoops to go with. And I'm sure there's other people out there who would order multiple sets and not just a single one.

Thanks. I'll PM her about that tomorrow. Though I don't imagine that they'll want to pull one or two caps from a set they can sell. Might still have to send some. I have a lead on that anyway.
I've still got an F sitting here also, if that lead doesn't come through.

Not sure if I'm understanding this right ... the prices in the OP are just for the keys, right?  And you're asking how much extra would I be willing to pay towards making the scoop molds?

I think my desire for scooped keys tops out at about $30 total (however much that breaks down to per set).

Lasered scoops are slightly different than DS scoops if I remember correctly, and if they make a mold from lasered keys they would likely have to sand down the lasered infill (and thus destroy the keys).

I'm about to take on a Group Buy for the Apple Command key, more here, and depending on how that goes, I might be inclined to pick this up. They are similar in nature given that they are expanding on sets already produced, but again, I'd want to complete the other GB first.

Well if somebody (or split up under a few people) pays that amount beforehand and you split it up under all orders afterwards it's doable, 15$ + the cost of the caps themselves for 167 people. I would even pay 25$ for two scooped keys, and the molds can be used later in other GBs. It's worth it to me.

They're OK to me. I might support it but I prefer nipples. The scoops don't feel THAT much different from the normal profile and I often lose my place on the home row.

Maybe, if we don't get the 2500$ together we could raise a "scoop tax" on groupbuys, so if a groupbuy uses scooped keys a part of the cost of a kit of those goes back to the people who funded the molds? Only until the 2500$ are reached again. Just as an idea.
I personally don't know how scooped keys feel but I want some just for the rarity factor... Maybe with a bit of advertising this more people would get into it? Maybe also ask on DT if there's interest for this?
