Hey guys, as promised, here's the R5 Zealio GB & Zeal60 Rev2 PCBs! This time the PCB isn't limited to 100x units.
GB pricing will end Feb 26, 2017. Order is expected to ship from Gateron sometime mid-late March. Depending on Zeal60 order volume, it may ship sometime mid-March.
Click the images for links to the site!

Zeal60 Rev2 RGB LED PCB:
Everything factory pre-soldered & made in USA. Users only need to bridge a few jumpers and solder switches. Soldermask will be a "dark purple" shade.

April 27:
GB orders have completed shipping.
April 28:
Large majority of Zeal60s are being remade by the fab. Currently waiting to hear back on an exact date, but I'm expecting late may to mid June for the replacements.
-
I'm in for some switches!
-
I noticed that the first batch of zeal60's were made by pcbway. Any reason for switching the manufacturer?

Manufacturer did not change. It wasn't produced by pcbway.

Oh, sorry for the confusion. They just have your boards on their site for a soldermask color example picture.

That was one of the early Rev 0 prototypes during testing phase. You can see the 60 didn't come out properly...

Thanks for the info! I have been using them and was just wondering if there was something off about that firm.

While good, fast and cheap is technically impossible, PCBWay come close. They are definitely fast and cheap, and the quality is good, with only the occasional mistake during production, but they certainly don't offer free replacements. With prices that cheap, I don't blame them. FWIW I only use them for prototype PCBs and never ordered more than 10 - don't consider this an endorsement for anything else.

The Zealencio page says,
Both bottom out and up stroke sounds are dampened while using Cherry profile keycaps. OEM/DSA/DCS/SA caps have the upstroke silenced only.
Why is that? And do you happen to know if XDA profile caps would be silenced on the downstroke?

Part of the Zealencio's function rely on the keycaps to have a cross support for the keycap stem. Cherry profile (and apparently SP's G20) have the proper "height" crosses that touch the Zealencio clips before the stem on the inside bottoms out. OEM is hit and miss, due to the height of the caps and various manufacturers. XDA appears to look just like DSA without any internal hatch/support, so the bottom of the keycap wouldn't touch the Zealencio clip during bottom out.
As for the upstroke, the rubber area around the clip touches the stem just ever so slightly before it "tops out" fully. This is why it silences the up stroke so well.

What's the compatibility of Zealencios and costar stabs?
-
What's the compatibility of Zealencios and costar stabs?
Requires trimming of an edge from the clip to provide clearance for the costar wire. Does not affect the integrity or the silencing though.

Any plans for future revisions to the Zealencios so they'll work unmodded?

Currently no plans, sorry. Costar stabilizers have too many variants with no standardization. Certain boards also don't rotate the switch for vertically stabilized keys / iso enter, which would mean the bar would end up where the retention clips are.

Has there been any changes/improvements to the switches this round?

No changes. Happy with the revisions from R4 onward.

Will the Zealencio Silencing Clips work if LEDs are present?
-
Will the Zealencio Silencing Clips work if LEDs are present?
Yep, there are slots in the clip to allow for clearance for the LEDs.

Mmm... okay I will pick up many this time no regret : )

Friendly reminder that GB pricing will end in roughly a week.
+bump, can we implement the new GB section rules now? This just proves how dead vendor forums are.
-
Yeah I was trying to figure out why this is still on only one page.

Agreed!! I really miss seeing the Vendor GB threads out in the sections I'm looking at more regularly. Always forget/ ADD out before clicking through to here.
For my money, vendor threads are cool for vendor things and general topics, but when there's an active GB going, let it be out in GB section. :)

So what I've learnt is don't get too popular because you're GBs get hidden!

Goal for that is late March / early April.

Are the zealio pcb stabilizers also compatible with plates?
I'm a newb trying to build my first board.

I'm a newb trying to build my first board.
Nearly every custom keyboard uses PCB mounted stabilizers. Very few actually use plate mounted ones. Almost all OEMs use plate mounted stabs / costar.
So chances are your plate has a cutout for PCB mounted stabilizers.

@Zeal If I place an order from the site that includes in stock as well as GB items (LEDs in this case,) will the in stock ship sooner or should I place two separate orders?
Thanks!

If you combined in stock with GB items (PCB, Switches), they would ship together at a later date. If you wanted LEDs sooner, best to place the order separately.

My PCBs came in some time ago, great quality and one silly mistake by me which some professional service would have caught. :-[
I need to start reviewing my boards on some other people before ordering. :))
Btw, did you do any other changes to the zeal60 rev2 besides changing some capacitor values?
-

I lengthened the mount hole slots on the left and right sides so it fits some cases like the Sentraq which have standoffs 1mm or so further in from where they are on a TEX case, for example.

Almost forgot to get my order in...

Tried to order last min and got 'shipping is not available to this destination' O=

Fixed. :)

Zeal just ordered two packs of stabs for CONUS. Was surprised to see my shipping price start at $15 with the only choices being DHL 1 Day delivery , 1 day before 12pm, and 1 day before 10:30am. Why no regular shipping?

From my experience, Canada Post is **** and takes forever. I think some artisans took 3-4 weeks and it cost $10. Even if CP was $5, DHL is going to be so much better.

That's exciting! Did you order switches or PCB?

Quick update:
Orders containing switches/zealencios/stabs are shipping now.
Small issue: GH lube is running low, been waiting for the restock to come in. Should be sent out next week. If I run out of lube vials while packing, orders with lube will be held until shipment comes in next week.
Small issue2: Gateron accidentally produced 65g Plate mount Zealios with PCB mount legs. They are currently reproducing them and will be sending out a replacement in about 10-15 days. If your order contains "65g plate mount Zealios (Milky bottom clear top)" and wouldn't mind having PCB mount variants, let me know by replying to your email confirmation. Otherwise, orders containing those switches will be held until the correct switches arrive.
Zeal60 PCBs are still under production. Expected to complete and ship around early April.
-
Just ordered some sip sockets and 70 r5 switches. :D
I'm wondering if I could add in an order of 70 warm white LED's to my order? Just realized that literally moments after I sent in the order. :-[

Received! Thanks for another awesome GB process.
PS: my package smells like vanilla; I tried to find the scent for a good 15minutes, only then did I find out it came from the package itself. Don't know where it came from but it made the unboxing even better. Haha

Sorry for being late to the party, but is this still available ?
It seems I can still order r5 stuff from your website.
I'm interested in switches and stab

You can always order I believe, but the GB pricing is no longer in effect. The prices you see on the webpage are what you will pay...they aren't actually that much different than the GB prices if you need something now.

Extras of everything were ordered. They are still available for pre-order pricing. If you placed the order now, it would probably be fulfilled around end of month/early April.

Ooh forgot about this for a while, just checked my email and my stuff shipped monday! Can't wait to get hold of it ;D

Hello again Zeal,
I just ordered 90 switches and a pack of transparent stabz on the website.
I forgot to order some lube, and maybe some leds.
Is it possible to "merge" those orders (only 1 shipping) once I ordered everything ?
Also about the leds, Do i need to "trim" them before installing them ? or they already fit perfectly ?

1.8mm LEDs fit perfectly and don't require any modifications.

Can't wait to get my switches and the sentraq 65 kit. Going to be a whole lot of lovin.
-
As excited as I am for everything that's coming in, I think I'm most excited for the stabilizers now.
Just recently built a new 60% board, and the space bar that I have that has worked on every other board so far hops right off the stabilizers on my 60% build and they rattle like there is no tomorrow. Know the rattle and fit can be fixed with lube and tape, but can't wait to try these stabs when they come in. Would love to see if they work as I want without any modification. If so, I will be ordering more.
-
Just noticed the 62g has sold out. Will you have more in on this round or is that it for now?

Out/all accounted for, for now. Most likely have a handful 62g's left, but would need to complete shipping out all the GB orders first. Would have to join in on R6 for more 62g's.

Packing / shipping 74xx range right now. Though the 65g Plate mounted Zealios also arrived today, so I'll be jumping back to fulfill those earlier orders.
Looking to finish everything over the weekend/early next week. Then all remaining orders will be orders with lube / PCB orders which will be shipping early April.

Really? The tracking says customs cleared.
They can't possibly chase fees retrospectively. In this hobby, I am used paying additional taxes on everything as it comes from overseas, I was just chuffed on this occasion.

DHL deliver before you pay, but then again I'm not sure what Zeal values the packages at. I think it's $20? Really don't remember.

Update:
Most GB/preorders have now been shipped. Ran a bit short on boxes but they're coming in on Monday and will resume shipping all outstanding orders.
Lube took a bit longer to pack from the supplier. It will be shipped out Monday instead of this week. Since I'll be DHLing it, it'll be scheduled for delivery Tuesday.
Zeal60 PCBs should deliver Wednesday/Thursday, pending no delays. Will have those out asap as well.

In my experience, Gateron switches don't close properly when you place a switch sticker between the two halves. I've only ever used stickers for the aesthetic change though as I don't think that stickers make a difference in terms of switch feel.

I just got done lubing my new switches with the thick formula Krytox Switch Lubricant from techkeys. They feel fantastic, it lowers the sound profile a bit and makes them so smooth. You do lose the slightest amount of snap in the bump (on 67g switches anyway). I would recommend only lubing the side rails and springs a bit.
I found the EK Mechlube 2 too be a little bit too thick and really changes the feel too much for me. This would be better on stabs.

I use the GH V4 Thick lube on switches, stabs and springs. Works great all around. :)

My wallet hurts now.
From just a look at these switches I've since
- ordered a winkeyless b.face x2 and acrylic case
- orderd these switches in 78g
- ordered keycaps from aliexpress and also browsing the classifieds here and on /r/mechmarket
$200 for the pcb and case and some holtites, $90 for switches and stabs, $40 and counting for keycaps.
And all I was going to do was order a pok3r with mx clears, white backlit and white case. But nope, out of stock. Oh well.

So my order is switches+lube. Can I expect them to be shipped today/tomorrow?

$200 for the pcb and case and some holtites, $90 for switches and stabs, $40 and counting for keycaps.
And all I was going to do was order a pok3r with mx clears, white backlit and white case. But nope, out of stock. Oh well.
Ordered the same case for my 67g switches :thumb:
Was going to go with GoN but he never answered any of my emails.
Also grabbed those pixelated galaxy keycaps from massdrop
I was looking at GoN Nerd60 but after reading about some of the stories regarding that, I decided not to. I think as far as keysets is going, that GB for the GMK Adventure Night over on originative seems right up my ally.

I picked up two GoN Nerd60 PCBs through LeandreN/Mekanisk's most recent group buy, and the PCBs are great. I converted one to QMK, and am loving the programmability. If you're interested in one of the Nerd60 PCBs, definitely keep an eye out for LeandreN's next group buy - it's a solid route to go.

Just wondering how long would it take for my stab order that I placed yesterday to ship, thanks again! :D

just to give you a rough idea on how fast this was (which blew my mind)
I placed my order on 4/10 and received it today 4/12. this was to the southwest united states.

How do people figure out what kind of Zealios they like? I kind of want to try them but it's hard to take a leap and do a whole keyboard in them :(

65g/67g are always safe bets. Most popular weights as well. 78g if you're a bit heavier handed, and want something lighter than MX Clears.
Hi Zeal,
I thought you are sending out the packages on Wednesday and Thursday?
I've been shipping orders out daily. All non-PCB GB orders should already be out/printed now. Received Zeal60 PCBs today, currently flashing & testing every single one, then will work on packing them out.
-
That's exciting news about the PCBs! Put my preorder in Feb 1st, and I'm super excited that the day is getting closer and closer. Thanks for the hard work on this, Zeal!

Ok, I am leaning toward jumping on the 67g. I am a fan of brown and wouldn't mind slightly more tactility. I also like the sound of increasing resistance as you get closer to bottoming out.
Are the 2x3x4 "Fast" RGB LEDs you sell compatible with the Zealios? And do you think I should order the R5s or are the issues people are talking about with keycaps pulling it through something a first time keyboard builder (and solderer) should avoid and maybe wait for R6?
Thanks :D

Auto changing RGB LEDs are a bit more picky and may not be compatible with all PCBs. They work with Zealios no problem, as they're just like all other 2 pin LEDs. You won't be able to select the colours and they'll just flash a preset cycle every time.
There haven't been any changes to the Zealio switch since R4, it's been refined to my satisfaction now. So not sure what issues you're referring to. If you're a first time builder/solderer though, I would recommend the 65g plate mount variant as the bottom is more resistant to heat to prevent overheating.

I see. Well, the only reason I want RGB is because I'm after a particular shade of green. I definitely don't want rainbow LEDs :p Is color selection possible?
I will most likely be making them on a RAMA PCB if that is of any info.
And the issue I'm talking about was being discussed here, I know nothing more than what I read on this page: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=84248.850

Currently, the only aftermarket PCB that can let you choose any shade of color is the Zeal60 RGB PCB on our site. All other PCBs are single color only and are limited by LED color.
Those posts are referring to the stabilizer wire sometimes popping out when keycaps are pulled from stabilized keys. There's an easy fix to reduce the tightness of the stabilizers, and that's to squeeze the horizontal stem on the insert with pliers once or twice, each side. We're currently working with the manufacturer to address the tightness.
-
Oh wow. That boggles my mind. Guess I won't be building a keyboard after all (at least until someone comes out with a TKL PCB that does color selection). Thank you for the info, appreciate it!
Edit: I've just been informed that diffusers don't require the PCB to have key RGB support. Plus, someone pointed out the Zeal65 you've teased which looks pretty dope! So I think I'm on the hook for the project after all haha. I would love a Zeal75 or Zeal TKL :p
Edit2: Just found and bought a Zealios tester from https://www.novelkeys.xyz so I can try them out and be a little more sure!
Edit3: you make some really sexy PCBs btw :D

Not quite the same, but similar (for frosted switch): https://imgur.com/a/e9akf
For pics of regular Zealios on the Zeal60, they're posted on the listing.

About that...Unfortunately there's some bad news with regards to Zeal60 order fulfillment time.
Spent my whole Easter break flashing/inspecting/QCing each Zeal60. A large majority of Zeal60 orders had to be put aside due to them failing my personal "QC" standards. They are all fully functional boards and nothing is wrong electronically, but many didn't meet my aesthetics QC (ie: any PCB with a visible scratch on the surface will fail). This was a surprise for me because the first round was spotless. Not sure what happened the second time around during handling. They were all packed the same, so it wasn't shipping damage. I have contacted the fab and have asked them to remake all the boards that had any aesthetic defects. The Zeal60 is a premium board and the quality, design & aesthetics should reflect it. I will send out as many boards as I can that meet my criteria, but the majority of participants will have to wait a bit while we resolve this issue with the PCB fab. Apologies for the delay.
-
I know I speak for myself here... but no worries from me on the Zeal60's. Thanks for doing such stringent QC on the boards. Appreciate the commitment to quality!
Besides, I ordered Feb 1st. What's a few more weeks in the grand scheme?

I'm glad that you want it to meet your quality standards instead of just shipping them out. Makes me excited to receive my PCB. I am going to PM you though with questions regarding my order.
[Edit] Thanks Zeal for taking care of me so quickly!

Is it possible to add on to our orders if they haven't shipped yet?
I'm regretting not picking up a 7u stab with my 6.25u stab :(

Just got my pre-order in for some Zealios switches. I got a switch tester and I really like the feel of 65g. I think I'm going to love it!
Any chance the Zeal 65 or a TKL or 75 is anywhere near being available?

Any idea when R6 will start, really interested in 62g?

R6 will start around May or so. Need to finalize some details first.
Zeal65 pcb & kit may be pushed back to end of May/early June.

Does this not apply for the Massdrop units?
I just received my PCB from Massdrop and I'm seeing some minor scratches and discolorations in the soldermask.
Honestly, I probably wouldn't be bothered with it if I didn't see your post. It got me all excited to get a pristine PCB, but now I'm just a little sad.

Massdrop PCBs were also checked for scratches. There shouldn't be any major scratches, unless I had accidentally missed it during hand review. :(
If by discoloration, you mean by a bit of extra purple "rings" surrounding the holes, those are unfortunately part of all PCBs and will happen during the soldermask & drying process.

I placed order #7935 for PCB, Zealios, zealstabs and some hot swap sockets.
When do you think it will get shipped?

Currently waiting to hear back from the PCB fab regarding replacement timeline. The LEDs used with the Zeal60s are custom produced as well, so will have to coordinate the two pieces simultaneously. Realistically, I'm expecting the replacements to arrive by late May or early June. Will update everyone with any new updates as I receive them.

Hey noticed you said you'd send out all of the ones that passed inspection. Just wondering if all of those have been sent out already. Keeping hope alive for order #6825.

I got my Zealios :D :D (and also my Green Tea KitKats!! They are really good as long as you don't go in expecting chocolate! :thumb:)
Made a Falcon-8 with some of them, waiting on some group buys to do keyboards. Thanks a bunch for offering this great product :D
I used your White LEDs and some lime green LEDs I got from Evil Mad Scientist but unfortunately, the EMS ones are absolutely pathetic next to yours! Yours are super bright and nice. Is there any chance you'll ever stock lime green ones, or any chance you know of a source for lime green ones that would be as bright as yours?
Thanks a million :) :llama:

I've stocked lime green once, but unfortunately the variant I sourced wasn't bright enough for my liking so it was dropped. There are certain LEDs that just aren't bright... ie: uv purple (frequently just looks blue, barely lit).

That is a bummer. On RGBs I can create quite a nice lime green :(
All the more reason to hold my breath for a Zeal75 or ZealTKL I guess :p

I understand that the advantage to using the milky bottom switches is that they allow more heat and are good for amateur solderers...
But what are there any disadvantages to using the milky bottom switches?

The main disadvantage would be that the bottom is white so if you use LEDs it cannot travel through the switch quite as much.

Zeal, are we still looking at a shipping date some time in early June for the PCBs?
Also, how would using switch stickers affect the shine through if I was using stickered zealios on the PCB? I've got a bunch of leftover gold stickers from a project that I would love to use... but if they would drastically affect the lighting... I don't want to use them.

Bare PCBs were just returned and delivered to our manufacturer today. They will start assembling shortly and I should be able to provide a more accurate date as to when the PCBs are shipped out.
I wouldn't really recommend switch stickers as it would block some of the light...They're not really worth using either on Zealios because the two halves are quite tight already.

Thought that would be the case with the stickers, just wanted to check before I sunk some time into them. Thanks for the update on the PCBs as well.

Yeah had two wires from the R1 stabs pop out when changing keycaps. Had to get an eyeglass screwdriver and a lot of patience to pop them back it safely. Took about 30 minutes.

There is drop of Zeal transparent stabs at MD right now, may I know whether those are v2 stabs or stock from previous v1 batch?

Anyone here built a winkeyless board using Zeal stabs and had clearance issues? https://imgur.com/a/CMhBh This build had me wanting to build a wkl board but it seems like the cutouts are not big enough for the Zeal stabs to fit. Would prefer with not having to shave off the plates and possibly damage it but it seems like I don't have much of a choice.

You'll need to shave a bit of the acrylic plate due to the layered acrylic sandwich design.

rip, using other stabs would be easier but I guess I'll just look into doing the shaving bit. Really would much prefer to have screw ins for this board, and the clear housing definitely helps with the aesthetics.

Hey, not trying to pester, just wondering if the manufacturer has given you any timelines around the Zeal60s.
They've been putting our assembly on low priority unfortunately. :/ There is progress as the bare boards are all done, but it's been slow as we've been chasing them weekly. I'm looking to receive the boards no later than end of July. Really sorry about the wait -- heavily considering looking at other fabs for future productions.

I don't want to be rude but this wait is really a let down and it's starting to get to me.
I ordered during the pre-order phase in april (i think just before zeal said that so many of the pcb's had to be re-done). Then came the mid june-ish timeframe.
I was so looking forward to building the keyboard during my vacation in july but that doesn't seem to be happening. Maybe i will get the Zeal60 i ordered in the Massdrop GB in june before the first one?
I have so much stuff just waiting for the pcb to arrive right now, laying there taunting me every day... so i check the thread every day :D
Seriously though, i would take the pcb's with the small scratches any day over waiting this long, as long as they are only cosmetic. It won't show under the plate either way...

I ordered a R2 Zeal60 from massdrop months later than the R2 I ordered from Zeal's site and it arrived already and I have been using it daily so I would say order one from MD if you can. The great news is after you build and use your Zeal60, you will be happy that you have another PCB coming in at some point for another build. I have everything for new new build including multiple PCB's but after using the Zeal60, there just is no reason to use another PCB it's that good.

I've already ordered from MD too :)
I have everything ready for two builds except the PCB (and some zealios and stabs that are in the pcb order from zeal).

Wait are the MD ones the defective ones? How is that possible? :( Been waiting on a full R2 kit to build a brand new 60....

My Fjell has been sat in my room for weeks waiting for this PCB :p

Do you have any news for us Zeal? :D

Been flashing the boards and QCing over the weekend. I'm currently working through fulfillment from the earliest order downwards. A lot of boxes have been packed today and are shipping out. You'll receive a shipping notification email once your order ships!
-
Wooo just got my notification for shipping!

Got my toys today!
Zeal, quick question. What's the pointy black plastic stick?

Did you order Zealencios? It might be the tool to attach them properly.

Thats kinda what I was thinking, but figured I'd make sure lol

It's a spudger. use the flat end to press perpendicularly against the Zealencio edges. Each edge has to click once to ensure proper fit.

My massdrop order shipped before my zeal order now. I still have to wait for my zeal order though as that one includes the stabs for both boards

Oh man if this could come in this coming week while the wife is out.....excited!
On that note, I still lack a 60% case for this. Anyone care to share what they're using?

I grabbed a lambo from originate (https://www.reddit.com/r/mechmarket/comments/5n8db7/gb_lambo_cases_gh60/?st=j5ik0qkz&sh=37864344) and a low profile case from sentraq (https://sentraq.com/collections/parts-1/products/60-aluminum-milled-case) to put my two zeal60's in
-
Im probably putting mine in the revo hhkb case.
That or it'll just go in my aluminum tex case.

Just assembled mine last night. 67g Zealios, lubed screw in stabilizers with cherry stems (I'm probably one of the rare few that prefers the "mushy" bottoming out of unclipped stabs). Absolutely love it, and it was incredibly easy to build on because everything is labeled and the holes for the legs on the switches is actually wide enough to accommodate them without having to use a ton of force to push them through.
Only one minor bummer is that the LED under my left Winkey on a 7u spacebar layout seems to have trouble with reds. Seen it before on an RGB LED that went bad. Overall not a big deal to me because the board itself came out really nice. Just wish I had the foresight to pick up a REVO hhkb case for this and some Zealencios to try out.

Are all 7 jumper pads properly bridged? The LED matrix gets a bit confused if it's missing the few bridges and a few keys will either flash the wrong color or not light up without them.We do check the RGB LEDs on each board before sending them out. L_Win is one of the keys that can properly display white under our testing process and would've been picked out if it had a dead color channel.

Zeal to the rescue! Noticed later that day that my spacebar LED wasn't lighting up, so I opened it back up and realized in all of my early morning grogginess when I assembled the board, I didn't complete the bridge for the 7 jumper pad. Fixed this and now the LED color is displaying properly. Thanks for the heads up!
Also, the lube I got from you has completely ruined me for non-lubed stabilizers, makes the board sound and feel worlds better. Great product.

Just got my Zeal60 built today, and it's really awesome. I have run into an issue that may be beyond my abilities with programming however. When I switch through the different lighting modes, the keymap actually changes on some of them. I'm not sure if I'm missing something in the readme or what but it's really got me confused. For example, on lighting mode 3 the wasd keys switch to arrow keys (and I have HHKB layout flashed, so I don't know why poker FN layer would be on the board at all). If I change it back to turn the lighting off it sometimes fixes the problem, sometimes I have to cycle through the lighting settings up and back down to off to get it to reset to the regular key map.
Hope I'm just doing something stupid but I'd love to get this sorted out if anyone has any idea what I might have done wrong.
Edit: Just realizing it matters which order I release the two FN keys. If release FN1 before FN2, that's what sticks it in the alternate layer.
-
I just built my two boards yesterday, these boards looks amazing, i love them! Thanks Zeal!
I'm having trouble getting both of my split shifts fn keys to light up though, the problem is the same on both of my boards and i cannot figure out what i've done wrong, all the other leds light up and are in sync.
I've bridged JB4, JB14, JD5, JD7A, JC0, JC6 and JC16.
I've forked and flashed my own QMK config available here https://github.com/lisinge/qmk_firmware/blob/lisinge/keyboards/zeal60/keymaps/mike/config.h
Flashed by first plugging it in while holding space + esc and the nrunning make zeal60-mike-dfu
Any ideas?
