Perhaps this has been covered, but I didn't see it. The connector for the cables on Filco boards is available for purchase for pennies, sorry don't remember where I read this, but it's a common molex connector. Would it be possible for a custom cable to come in a 2 piece that I saw earlier on this thread, with a short, say 3 inch, part that would come out of the board to the main detach point, and the same short piece terminating in the Filco molex connector? The second, longer piece in the 2 piece configuration would start with the 2nd half of the detach point, and then terminate in a standard USB port? I'll look to see if I can find that molex connector, but a picture of it is shown here at http://imgur.com/a/Yhahf#16  The final result would be a detachable cable Filco without the need to have to add in a jack to the board, should just be disassemble, pop out old cable, pop in short run of new detachable cable and snake thru existing opening, reassemble, connect rest of cable, and plug in. Thoughts anyone?

If I'm understanding this correctly, it sounds like a quick and easy detachable cable mod that could be done by people without a need for soldering, stripping wires, sourcing parts, etc? If so, I might want to be in for one too.

The connector is easily found, but you need to do something about the female pins that go into those connectors. A crimple tool costs about $300. Unless you can source pre-crimpled pins.

yeah, we should do a fundraiser for the crimping tool for the filco pcb connector, maybe with a cable/part of a cable as an incentive.

For low quantities it's not that hard to crimp the connectors manually.  Just be sure to solder after crimping and it'll be solid.  There are even crimp tools at Home Depot that'll get you close enough, then just clean up with some needle nose and solder.

After discussing with MM about the mod, I still think it sounds like a good idea, but had no idea what the added cost of that midpoint detachable cable connector was. Hint, it's not inexpensive. However, we are now in talks about making a single cable, sleeved, with usb on one end, and the Filco specific connector on the other. The only work that would possibly be needed for the board itself is to expand the hole with a rasp or file,and a stopper of some kind on the inside, possibly using a zip tie cinched down to act as a stress relief, but it would give it the clean, factory look that I'm going for. What are everyone's thoughts? I'd be down for throwing some cash in for a crimper to get the inner connector attached properly if enough people were interested as well.

^I am working on trying to get better pricing for these connectors. I'll keep you guys posted and won't make this an official buy option just yet. As for those molex connectors, I'll pick some up and give it a shot. I'll try and get some pics up for you guys soon.

I wanted a dash of yellow for my phantoms as I thought it would look good and I couldnt pass up something thats in the same category as kevlar and nomex. Youll have to do a review of the silver silica when you receive it, I wonder if it actually is what the name implies? Yea I switched to the 2 piece because i want a detachabl cable to add to the portability of my phantom.

Yeah for sure I'll do a review on it! It sounds amazing and looks really good as well. I really want to get the 2 piece but it's pretty pricey and I probably won't use it as much as I think I will, so single cable it is!
