Cool... Looks like another potent 60%

I don't think the Eagle model will fly though... Caps Lock instead of a right shift. Hew!

I'm still waiting to hear whether or not it will fit a GH60, doubt it but it would be cool.

That's not a Caps Lock, it's a Shift.  Since it's a Pure layout and they didn't have a 1.75x Shift for that keyset, they used the standard (non-stepped) center stemmed Capslock and an arrow key to fill it out.  The stepped Caps Lock on the board is an offset stem, which the PCB design accounts for.  The arrow key is likely the ~` and the ~` is likely the Esc, in line with the Pure, but it could be something different.  Based on the sketches below the Caps Lock is definitely a Shift key though.

They're doing an interest check for viper and eagle over at kbdlab though.  It looks like it will cost 200,000 WON (about 187 USD) for a set.  Pretty cheap considering other options in the market.

Some info....

- Interest check for Viper & Eagle will last until 3/10.   He needs at least 100 combined units before proceeding with the groupbuy.
- IC stands at about ~50 units with 5 days to go -- not looking very good :(
- Someone asked Duck about its compatibility with other 60% PCBs.  He's not sure because he doesn't own any other 60%.
- Kit includes: Aluminum case (1 pc design, probably means it's a tray) + Stainless Plate + PCB (SMD comp pre-soldered) + bolts
- Fully programmable.  I believe it supports full LED as well.
- Price of 200,000 won is before VAT.  Final price will likely be about 10% more.

As far as I can tell from the picture, Eagle is pretty much just a 60% version of lightsaver 96, and I have not seen anyone complaining about lightsaver's build quality. But, of course Eagle is not as good as FMJ case material wise. (EDIT: and anodization wise as well. Just to be clear.)

IINM, duck's alu case is made of 6061 material and FMJ's is 7075 (premium)
but i'm not a material expert...what's the difference between this 2 anyway?
Title: Re: duck viper
Post by: bazh on Wed, 05 March 2014, 22:27:29
well the build-quality depends on many factors and the alu may not the problem, a lot of housing out there using 6061 and it's still good, and at that price I don't expect to get a 7075 case too (except the one from Ali), but  the anod, I have some friends comfirmed the Duckmini2's anod surface is not so good, and joneslee also tell that the pcb coating on Buttefly got crack when he do the solder works

but dont get me wrong, I don't mean to talk bad or sth like that, just some thought and that Viper, its price, is one damn sexy case I want
Title: Re: duck viper
Post by: Photoelectric on Wed, 05 March 2014, 22:38:54
I assume that the PCB fabrication for Butterfly was done in the same place as for the LightSaver, and I have not noticed ANY issues with cracking or anything of the sort when soldering my Lightsaver.  It went perfectly and was very easy to solder, and I have no complaints about PCB quality whatsoever.

The anodizing quality--in general--that people are talking about--I think there's some confusion about surface preparation/finish BEFORE anodizing is done with actual anodizing.  Actual anodizing builds a uniform porous layer over time that is then infused with dye (optional) and sealed.  Any roughness or surface texture difference is a result of surface polishing before anodizing.  Uneven anodizing would be either of these two things: something blocking parts of the anodizing surface in the acid bath (unlikely, if suspended properly) or uneven coloration from lack of dye bath agitation during the dying process.  I'm guessing the issues were more with the surface preparation before anodizing.  Maybe some unevenness around the USB socket hole through which the case may have been suspended for anodizing / dying.

Granted my LightSaver has no dye and is clear-anodized, I can't comment on even tint, but from photographs of the red version ,it looked even.  The finish on my LightSaver is very neat and smooth, without any parts looking patchy or poorly finished to stand out.

The reason I asked is that the PCB from the Duck Mini v2 fits in a poker case just fine. It has the same mounting points as the Poker X (e.g. no center mount).

Has there been any images or schematics of the PCB, because I haven't seen any.

Custom keyboards generally are DYI unless they have an add-on option that states you can buy the assembly service. So in this case, it's ~$220 (not including tax/ems shipping) for the DYI kit, without switches, LEDs, and stabs

Worldwide shipping is available with EMS.  I have shipping rates from my other group buys, you can check it out. It'll probably be around $40 to ship to EU.

viper and eagle are for sale

I couldn't figure out the payment system ... something about IE and win xp

Is there a reason why it has to be a separate gb for international? I'd pay international postage fees.

It looks like you have to have a Korean address to sign up for their site.  At least, that's as far as I was able to get in the member sign-up area.  Hopefully elton5354 will be able to run a group buy for all us over here!

Well, I was going to reply with the "Why not both?" girl but you preempted me.  Dang.  But for what it's worth I really like the HHKB layout.  I especially like the placement of the arrow keys.  Within a week or two the function layer gets so easy to use it's second nature.

I mean, push comes to shove, I can just use xmodmap, or something, but I wouldn't be able to map function layers, which on a 60% are completely necessary.

Firmware is here for basically all Duck boards http://duck0113.tistory.com/84 (http://duck0113.tistory.com/84). The program generates a .hex file which is flashed to the keyboard itself including macros and LED controls.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "settings" but the keyboard layout you choose (including macro keys) is programmed into the onboard controller. If layout and O2D programmed macros is what you mean by settings that's exactly the case.

Yeah I guess I didn't define my terms correctly.  That is exactly what I meant by settings.  Not so much the macros; mostly the function layer.

This might even be more popular than lightsaver or orion cause of the uniqueness of it being one of the only HHKB-styled MX boards that don't use blockers.
I expect upwards of 30-40 people wanting to get this.

What you get is, PCB + the case. What you will need to source yourself: switches, keycaps, LEDs (if you plan to put LED on it), PCB mount stabilizers. Not sure whether there will be options to add switches/LED/stab/assembly when the groupbuy happens, but in general, these are what you need.

I thought there would be an assembly service considering the current v2 gb has this already.

In the past, I have seen where a 3rd party will do an assembly service as a separate group buy, but it doesn't always turn out well. My suggestion is to have your order ship directly to the person that you want to build it.

For example, place an order with TJ, or any other assembler listed here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45886.0) and then have your order shipped directly to them. Once they receive it, they'll build it to your exact specifications and then ship it, completed, directly to you.

Based on my past experience with assembly services, working directly with an assembler directly is the best method.

Found it:
Viper will have that bluish grey as well. Viper is 1 piece design. The PCB will be cut to fit on the case, so the PCB will be shaped like a HHKB.

I think Eagle PCB fits existing poker cases, maybe elton can confirm this.  As long as price is decent it's a good option if you want pcb+plate combo to go with your favorite poker case.

For the record, I'm not interested in just a PCB.  If anything, it'd be just the case, but the fact that everything is made specifically for each other part makes it all smoother and nicer in the end so I'm happy for that.  If this mini discussion is in reference to someone else though, ignore this post.  :P

Maybe the end of July to August..

Yeah it's impossible to be end of May as the Lightsaver V2s won't be able to make it to that timeline as well..

Fantastic news Elton! More time to save!!!

So let me get this straight, all I will need to make this into a working keyboard is a usb cable, cherry mx plate mountable switches, keycaps, stabilzers, and leds? That's going to probably be about another $100 huh?

LEDs optional, but the rest of the stuff you need. If you want your stuff to look nice, then it will be expensive, but you can get a cable for really cheap (or you might even find a spare one lying around somewhere in the house) and some nice looking doubleshots for cheap (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=58110.0).

That's basically what I want, except for the led colors.
Teal mods(is this possible? they make teal leds, right?), white alphas, and red Caps Lock for me.

Does anyone know if the Viper supports reactive leds, as in if I press Shift, only the Shift key lights up?

62g clears seem popular but are hard to source, can we have the option of including 62g clears with the GB?

I doubt it.
I just plan on getting them separately, and sending them to the person who will be assembling my board for me.

You can get them anytime from mechanicalkeyboards.com, unless you don't live in CONUS.

Maybe Sherry? I know he has bad reputation on GH but I never have problem with getting accessories from Sherry.

I think he does have 62g's in stock right now.  Or at lease it gives you the option to add them to cart.

Shipping will be around $50 for a single unit, if the Duckmini v2 buy is anything to go by.
