[IC] Open Source Switch Breaker Machine Project
« on: Sat, 19 June 2021, 12:34:34 »
Hey everyone,

How's everybody doing?

Some time ago I watched a video from Don from The Board Podcast, about his amazing switch breaker tool and I was hooked. Here's the original video he published:

I went after some alternative parts I could buy locally and ended up redesigning some parts of the project while adding a control box that allows for remote control over WiFi and also programming break in cycles.

Here's a project overview video I put together:

So, the idea behind this IC is to gather feedback and interest around having a series of videos made where I would give very detailed instructions on how you could build this machine from scratch and explaining the design behind it.

If that's something you'd like to see, please fill the form below:

Thank you!

Would be a good resource for the community to have on hand, also consider just making a written document along with some pictures if this doesn't get the response you hope for. Just watched the video and it looks pretty promising, keep up the good work!

I've been trying to come up with switch breaking machine myself some time ago. Ended up with pressing 64x switch tester against wooden board with solenoids. Worked well for a small batch, but for my further needs something like this would be great. So, count me interested

Registering interest and would like to ask, do you have plans to sell the parts for us who don't have access to 3D printing nearby? Also does anyone know how many thousands of clicks we'd ideally setup the timer to run in order to not exaggerate and over-break the switches? I am currently planning on doing 100.000 clicks as I believe switches are generally rated at 50 mil keypresses. One could probably estimate how much use a keyboard gets on daily basis (wpm) and find how much break in is necessary to replicate a board used for like a year or two in the 80's like nixdorfs or vintage blacks....
