[IC] GMK Red Lantern
« on: Mon, 04 October 2021, 17:30:21 »

Welcome to the GMK Red Lantern Interest Check!
It's Phil/Relapse on MechGroupBuys/YouTube.
This was a set I've had in the works for a long while now and I've slowly made progress to the point where I was comfortable posting this IC.
Please take the time to read through the IC and fill out the form at the bottom! I appreciate any responses!
I'm looking for community feedback on where to take the set in terms of novelties, and some additional offerings.

Background:
This set was inspired by a Chinese Red Lantern. Specifically this photo:

Kits:

Novelties & Other Kitting:
Novelties are being planned for this set and is currently pending direction of IC.
I was planning on offering Latin Alphas as an alternate alphas kit. Please fill out the IC if you were interested in having them added.
Take a look at the IC to see what ideas are being considered and feel free to suggest your own!

Board Renders:
Keep in mind that board renders are not 100% accurate and could cause slight color variations due to differences in lighting in the render environment.
Credit to Dandruff for board renders.

Dalco 959 Mini

Fuji65

U80-A

Deskmats:
TBD - pending interest and direction of IC.

Collabs:
Artisans:
Coconut Keycaps
DeagCaps
Shirouu
YuKeys
-- MORE TO COME --

Metal Artisan Keycap:
TBD - pending interest in set & community feedback

Vendors & Group Buy Date:
TBD

Thanks for taking the time to go through the IC! Progress will be slow, so please bare with me while I learn the ropes (mostly ride off Dandruff!)... Looking forward to reading your comments.

Thanks

Winter for direction

Got a RAL or Pantone for the burgundy and yellow? Would P3 or RO2 fit for the sublegends?

For the base color: RAL3005
For the sublegends, I was thinking of P3.
For the legends, either N6 or a custom RAL (in talks to see what would be more feasible for the set).

For those wondering what this would look like next to perestroika…both are RAL 3005. (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=104415.0)

P3 is the red of classic red and the dominant alpha color of Handarbeit.

I like both of those a lot.

Edit: what about GMK cv for the yellow

I think the 40s kit, let alone a 40s kit at all, might be a little too large of an offering for GMK

Latin alphas would be an alt alphas kit if enough interest was there! Unfortunately I wasn't into the idea of having another base kit with latin alphas as it didn't really follow what I envisioned for the set!

i think its a cool set

Thanks  ;D

This was an interesting choice, I looked at quite a few kits and came up with this just to ensure full support for the majority of keyboards. I'll keep that under consideration though!

Could also consider RAL 3020 for subs! P3 is a bit brighter (which might be good). I think 3020 is more accurate to your renders. This is the red in GMK Panels, and Bachoo has used it on his legends on Ishtar (I believe that's where he used it). This is Bachoo's pic:

Yes, I've been flopping back and forth between this shade of yellow vs a darker one. I didn't want too deep a gold as it would make the set quite dark overall - playing around with different shades of yellow/gold to see what would be a good balance.

Thanks for providing that! Still deciding, I wanted the sublegends to be subtle and not super "in your face" pop out red that it directs all the attention to it when you glance at the set. Just enough that it stands out, but not enough that it takes over the whole set if that makes sense. Another issue with making the set appear too dark overall if my legends and sublegends were more of a darker tone, finding that balance that I like has been a mission.

I think its very hard to read the sublegends and i dont like the colors but thats just me. glwic

Yeah I think the renders were hard to do it justice. From the above response - I wanted more of a subtle red that sticks out, but not pop out in a sense. And no worries! Can't please them all, thanks for taking a look though!

I'm mostly concerned about the kit reaching MOQ naturally. As of recent, the solution from 40s community members is to just run three-key

I would love an alternate alphas kit without any Latin alphas at all, I think it would look very clean and more true to the inspiration image as well.

It’s not the same thing.

Hiragana and Katakana have 46 unique characters and so require the use of the number row to have them all represented. Here, the numbers are simply written out in Chinese. It’s like writing out “one” in English under the number “1”

Looks silly to anyone who reads Chinese.

And literally no keyboard with any kind of Chinese sub legend has a number sub legend on num row

+1 to no subs on numrow, looks a bit silly as is.  Everyone can read arabic numerals.

Also, OOC is there a reason for traditional subs vs. the simplified usage in the banner?

You can move r1 End and PgDn from base to numpad kit because those are for 1800 support.
