I don't transcribe or mindlessly drone paragraphs. That's for secretaries, or those with 120+WPM e-peen.

I type around 65-75 WPM. I can probably type faster than that when I know what I want to say, but when doing the tests, and you have to read and then type, I feel like it slows me down.

When I attempt to use Dvorak it drops to 11 WPM. That's quite the gap to try to overcome!

There's no correct finger position, imo. Type whatever is the most comfortable position for you. For example, the word "intro" the 'correct' way would be to type the T and the R, would be the index finger. But since they are so close, it's faster to type the T with the index finger and the R with your middle finger.

well, there MAY be an "ideal" finger layout... but that would vary with language.

The standard "home row" technique is terribly out of date. asdfjkl   is silly...    awefjio;  is the best home row

If you want to take it a step further replace ; with "right shift",   this way you don't have to  turn your right wrist to type "left" hand capitals..

I've been teaching myself to type on the Race (with it's smaller right shift key) and that has recently brought my Typeracer average down from 85wpm to 78wpm... I have a lot of problems with the " and the : for some reason... mostly because I learned bad habits a long time ago and don't use the left shift like I should.

Me too. I don't admit this outside of this forum. Everybody thinks I'm weird, even my fellow nerds. But to me, the sound of a nice key switch is just as musical as playing a piano. I go to a number of typing sites after working all day on my keyboard just to play music and relax. I even go to youtube just to listen to other keyboards that I like.

Hold on, typing with one finger is slow. Are this words per minute or characters per minute you posted?  :-)

Hey, are you able to switch between qwerty and colemak on the same keyboard and still achieve the same WPM ?
Or do you have different physical keyboards for each layout? I'm asking because I can type both dvorak and qwerty,
but not on the same keyboard, I find it confusing. Instead, I've associated dvorak with split/matrix keyboards (Kinesis Advantage, Ergodox, etc), and can only type QWERTY on normal flat keyboards and laptops.
 So I'd like to learn about your experiences here.

What can I say, I'm a big guy (about 6'6" / 2m) with heavy fingers.  I'm thinking about modding my Filco to Greens, but I need to try 45 and 55g Topres first...

45g actually hurts my left pinky from using the shift.

I'm also a big guy (six foot five) with freakish lanky hands, but there's something about the way the left shift really HITS the bottom on a 45g (I have a 55g realforce and it does NOT have this problem because of the cushioning effect from the 55g rubber dome.)

Typing on this scissor switch right now is actually less painful and I'm typing faster.

Now at home I will still be using my 55g Topre Realforce 87u.... it's amazing how much better 55g is (at least for little old me)
