Based on Matt3o's input, I sent the mock-up to SA for price and availability checking.  Pretty good news came back:

Nuclear Data Update for 30-June-2014
  • The set can be 100% semi-matte Row 3 SA profile.
  • There are only 5 unique legends, two of which are only $25 each to cut.
  • As with DSA, having a common profile reduces cost, so at an MOQ of 100, the entire 134 keycap set as pictured would be $73*.
* Plus tax, shipping, handling, and any other fees, penalties, costs, tithes, waivers, donation, transfusions, etc. that may be required.  YMMV!

Me, I'd like a long spacebar, and I know there are requests for ISO and other variants.  So that is all TBD.

But for a complete 104-key set plus TWENTY special keycaps, $73* looks pretty damn good to me for Nuclear Data Green SA.

Does that look good to anyone else?

This might end up being my first SA set :)

Geezus, your first SA set?  I thought you were an SA addict such as myself, boy was I wrong  ::) .

SA simply rules compared to any other profile SP chucks out of it's moulds.  I would walk a 1000 miles for any SA set being sold and I will never change my preference towards it.

Only other profile worth fighting for would be GMK's Cherry, Original Goodness when available, but that's it.

Heh nope!

I have a bag full of SA keycaps from my last Crap Bag.  one day if I get the time I was going to see if there was enough (minus space bar) for a full set to see what they feel like to type on.

Same with DSA - Granite is my first full set.

Damn Rowdy you're a newb when it comes to Group Buys then?

I thought you would have had tons of caps in every colour since Geekhack started but it goes to show not everyone is addicted to plastic key-porn (like myself).

Don't worry once these caps arrive at your home (hopefully within the near future) you'll have trouble deciding which keyboard to install them into  :thumb: .

For US$73 a full 134 keycap set, I'd be up for 2x sets!

If the options list for add-on sets is similar to Granite (based on a previous comment), then there's quite a bit of scope for extra cost in the extra bits and bobs.

Which is nice if, like me, you need to fit out an FC660M with an extra left shift etc... although if I had've been around for Granite, a quick look suggests I would have been up for $140 or so!
(common kit $35 + text mods $23 + icon pro mods $30 + Apple $20 + numpad $23 + 6.25 space $3 + extra enters 2.0 $5)

Nevertheless, the all-row 3 SA, colour and style means I'm up for at least one set.

Sounds great - can't wait. ;)

OK, who wants which "special" sets?

I see something like:
- Full 134-key set.
- ISO set (can also be used for that good old big-ass Enter key look!)
- Long (8u? 9u?) spacebar*
- Tsangan kit (1.5 - 1.0 - 1.5 - 7.0 - 1.5 - 1.0 - 1.5)
- Blanks
- Orange WASD?

* I need to do some research on the SA Row 3 Semi-Matte long spacebars that are available.  They show 6.2, 7, 8, and 9 in semi-matte. They do not show 9.75 or 10 SA spacebars in any finish.  The original had an 8-wide spacebar with no mods.  SP does have DCS matte-finish spacebars in 9.75 and 10.

Any of that interesting?

Regarding smaller kits, my personal plan is to use this on a 60-75% keyboard plus a separate keypad.  But my experience watching group buys is that for every TKL buyer there is another buyer who wants to replace his number/symbol row with pure numbers.  Personally, I'd like to reduce the number of group buy options and let the odd bits and pieces be re-distributed via trades and the classifieds.

So...

Q1. Who is gonna (a) demand which special keycaps sets AND (b) actually buy them if available?

Q2. Which long spacebar would you buy?  What keycaps would be needed to fill a long-spacebar bottom row?

I would definitely need/buy a tsangan kit. (not sure if I would buy anything if there is no tsangan available)

dont need a spacebar longer than 7x

I would be interested in both Tsangan and ISO kits, and possibly a few blanks as well just to cover my bases.

Although a 10x spacebar would be neat, I only have one (two?) keyboards that could use those, so the 6.25x/7x options would be fine.

I'd buy at least 1x each of the following (based on that $73 134key quote)
- Full 134-key set.
- Tsangan kit (1.5 - 1.0 - 1.5 - 7.0 - 1.5 - 1.0 - 1.5)
Plus
- an extra left Shift key for the FC660M and
- a 6.25 spacebar
if those aren't included in one of the kits.
Model M Industrial, SSK, Unicomp 104, Code TKL MX Green, FC660M MX Green + Clear + White + Grey, FC660C Topre 45g, MagicForce 68 USB and Bluetooth, Whitefox, some optical switch 65% Bluetooth split spacebar thing ... wait, I think I need an intervention. Based on the last key set orders I've made, I plan on buying one of everything. The only exception being spacebars in excess of 7x. Since I'm mostly a 60% guy, I just don't have the need.

I've found that you really limit yourself if you don't include enough sets.

Tsangan keys are a must for several to participate. Also I still think you should do a custom color and get exactly what you want. It is free so why the heck not, and more people will like a set that comes in a unique color.

Also 8, 9, 10 size spacebars would interest me. 8 and 10 especially. 9 size would require some weird setups to look correct. 1x 1x blank 9x blank 1x 1x or 1x blank 1x 9x 1x blank 1x for example.

For me personally I would like to see;

1) FULL 134-key set (has to happen).

2) SPACEBARS more including 6.25 and 7 for the majority here ONLY.

3) Tsangan Kit (Wouldn't be a decent Group Buy without it).

4) Orange WASD's for those that still Game like loons  :thumb: .

Just stick with these requirements and a vast number here should buy it easily.  Don't forget that Tsangan will always be required for every keyboard out there not being a Filco or Leopold model.

People seem to opine that the current price estimate is a bargain. In that case, perhaps we could ask for a quote for a more advanced set to see if it breaks the bank. I'd rather pay a lot for something great, than drop the price a couple day's lunch money and lose the features that would make it complete and unique.

For instance, if it's possible, how much would it cost for the full profile set? and glossy keys?

Having a texture that doesn't match the theme seems "generic," and row 3 only seems a bit like cutting corners, though I admit I would tolerate it. I guess I'd like the set to look as much like the picture the first page as possible.

I'd prefer to keep the price down.

Maybe an extra kit or two containing other keys?

I'd prefer to keep the price down.
Maybe an extra kit or two containing other keys?

What Rowdy said +1.
Model M Industrial, SSK, Unicomp 104, Code TKL MX Green, FC660M MX Green + Clear + White + Grey, FC660C Topre 45g, MagicForce 68 USB and Bluetooth, Whitefox, some optical switch 65% Bluetooth split spacebar thing ... wait, I think I need an intervention. Too late, there’s a couple of new Model Fs on the way.
Too much SA is never enough.

I would want to see, in order of importance:
- Uniform profile on alphas (to keep costs down and support non-qwerty layouts).  No homing keys, or include non-dished F/J.
- Blank Ergodox modifiers set, in matching or contrasting color.
- Alternate homing key set for Colemak, Dvorak, etc.

Nope, they are not launched yet.  Let's fix that.

First, some explanations of decisions made so far:

1. All Row 3 makes for a MUCH cheaper set and also permits re-arrangement for Dvorak, Colemak, etc.

2. All gloss was preferred, but NOT possible.  All semi-matte IS possible, and provides a uniform finish.

3. Standard SA colors that look good and make the GB easier to manage and reduce arguments.
VV Dark Green Keycaps
WA Bright White Legends
OAS Orange for just a few special keycaps

Kits are not decided.  I propose:

Proposed Nuclear Data Green Keycap Sets:
  • Main Kit: As pictured with 134 keycaps.
  • ISO Kit
  • Tsangan Kit
  • Alternate Dished Keys Kit
  • Orange WASD and Arrows Kit
  • Blanks, including extra 6.2 and 7.0 spacebars.

Matt3o, I'll send your proposed radiation icon.

It's tempting to ask for a couple of extra keys for HHKB and SmallFry 40% layouts, but I fear it would do a disservice to the group as a whole.

Everything looks great in my opinion. Straightforward, simple and easy-to-buy.  :thumb:

I miss a lot of modifiers to be completely comfortable with this set, otherwise it's very nice. Maybe you are willing to add:

1u: ctrl x 2 / alt x 2 / fn x 2 / shift / backspace
1.25u: fn x 2
1.50u: fn x 2 / backspace
1.75u: fn / shift

but I'm pretty sure I'd be alone getting them

surething

1u CTRL and ALT are mainly for custom keyboards and also 75% layouts (such as keycool 84)

1u FN is useful on a variety of scenarios, eg: to the right of the right shift in 60% layouts, in winkeyless if you want to add an FN layer.

1u SHIFT is just for custom 60% (but the minila has 1u shift for example)

1u BACKSPACE is again for custom keyboards (you way want to try a 14-cols layout sooner or later)

1.25u FN, well it's an all-around FN keycap size. Any 60% has at least 1, I'd add 2 just because I like function layers.

1.50u FN same as above if you prefer 1.5 modifiers but 1 is more than enough

1.50u BACKSPACE is for HHKB-like layouts or if you want to switch \| with backspace

1.75u SHIFT is for HHKB-like and PURE-like layouts (pretty common actually, I think this should end up in the main set)

1.75u FN is to swap capslock with FN (aka one of the best spot for FN)

Group Buy has been launched with SP.  I used my list (with the comma correction) plus Matt3o's "Special Keyboard Extras Kit".

As soon as I get confirmation back form SP I'll close this thread and open up a GB thread.

That's what I was thinking, but given that they are all 1u caps, it should be pretty easy replace with other caps if need be. It certainly won't keep me from buying the set.  :p

Good point.  And with such a small board in each case, and all rows the same profile, it should be quite easy to find a replacement key.   :thumb:
I also will still buy the set.   :p
