[IC] SA Royalty (its in the soon^tm phase)
« on: Mon, 30 October 2017, 00:42:05 »
This is SA Royalty, a SA set inspired by the color palette of "The Royal Tenenbaums" and traditional japanese temples.

Please vote here! It would really help the set: https://www.massdrop.com/vote/SA-Royalty

Pantone colors are as follows:

Alphas: 491 C
Mods: 504 C
Legends: 7499 C
Accent: 7570 C

How does it look? Feedback? Thoughts?

You should post color codes or something.

To me it just looks like Chocolatier or https://ctrlalt.io/buys/sa-retro

Even if it is a maxkeys version of SA Chocolatier- I’d be down for that.

(still salty about missing a Chocolatier set in the massdrop re-cap)

Even better, use that green and make it a proper remake of SA Retro, hell yeah

So many maxkeys, so few ISO enters.

The day you get maxkey to invest in a new mold i'd buy maxkey. I want this set, but no enter is a no-go.

I actually got the chocolatier 40% kit in the massdrop keycap recap. Super psyched man. :)

I don't actually want to remake any sets though. Thought the burgundy would be a nice, lowkey subtle set.

Nice, it looks like such a nice set. I really need to get my hands on a set.

Anyway burgundy could be good - I’ll be interested to see some renders mate :)

These aren't the best renders, and I'll definitely get better, but as KLE Render is down rn, these are the best I've got.

Would really have to see these come back as actual key samples.  This seems highly dependent on the exact color.  Could end up being a long process like Keyboard & Co

I’m getting the vibe but they still look just a tad too brown.  I’m trying my hardest to see burgundy...

You are very, very spot on. If I can't nail the colors, I wouldn't put this on my own board. I'm going to make sure I get the colors right.

Also, as to the brown thing, is it perhaps you have f.lux on? The set looks very different IMO when under different color temperatures. The change is rather drastic. For a reference point, I'm looking at it under a color calibrated monitor at 6600K. You may want to check it out under that?

Thanks for the feedback. :)

Hmm. Honestly, I would go for a burgundy board with this set. Beige would look good, and so would rose gold/champagne.

However, if I was to think of my ideal board to go with this set, in terms of color:

* Daaark Burgundy (at least as dark as the mods) powdercoated or anno finish. I would go powder coated on this, actually.

* Amber backlighting.

* Amber underglow.

IMO that would be endgame with this set.

i think this looks much better than chocolatier which was a bit too rich of a brown for me. it'd be nice to see some possible crazy color options for the usual keys (esc, f5-f8, arrows, enter). striping could be cool too for the f-row or the numerics.

Yeah paired with a grey board would look classy as hell.

And as for the previous suggestion, sounds like a very mellow and warm overall design.. there's not enough of that around, what with all the purples/cyans/greens etc.  :thumb:

MOQ is going to be 100, I hope we can at least make that. :/

Also, SA Retro burgundy is suuuuuuuuuuuuper rare. I don't really see how that set can possibly affect the numbers on this one when so few people have it. :/

Kinda? But kinda not? They both have burgundy alphas. And this has an orange accent key. They're both noticeably different colors.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. They're different sets, based off of different things, and different profiles.

On a side note: why point this out? it's ok to look like a different set that may have already ran. It doesn't matter at all. Unless they're literally identical with no changes, then I, personally, find no issues with that. I'd be interested to hear everybody else's thoughts on the topic. Do you think it's worth pointing out that a set looks similar to another? Why or why not? (_rubik, this isn't specifically directed towards you. I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on this though.)

I pointed that out not to be harsh or intentionally difficult. I'm just weary of two sets with similar colorways running in close proximity because I feel that they would snub each others sales. Yes they are different profiles, but I feel like the sales would be split over the two. That being said, it does give buyers the ability to get the same colorway in their preferred profile, so maybe it's beneficial. I could be wrong on both counts....

That's cool man, totally get it. The whole side note was more of an in general point. Thanks for looking out for that, though!

Red Samurai is after laser (iirc?) so i should probably wait until some time after that has dropped to do this project.

Anyway, thanks for the concern and clarifying. Appreciate it.

i dont think this is so close to samurai.  samurai is dark grey mods + burgundy alphas with yellow legends. This is a red + red set.

I think using brown mods would look incredible on this set.

I reeeaaaaallly don't like making people wait for 10 months after they purchase a product for them to get it. Also, Maxkey produces pretty quality keycaps. They're pretty on par with SP caps.

Name some quality issues, and provide links?

One more thing:

Would there be interest in a hiragana alphas kit? I'm thinking of adding one that's consistent with gorton modified. I was thinking the font Iroha Maru Mikami, with medium weight.

RAW cost would be about 75 bucks per kit at 200. So, not even sure if it will make it, but thought I would put it out there. I'll think of a cinematic reason later, but my current reason for this proposition is basically: I think it would look dope as ****. So yeah. Thoughts?

Thats a tough choice.  I think I prefer the second one, though.  Of course, this makes it very close to reverse SA retro burgundy.  Me likey.

This is the least thing you should worry about, or we would have missed alot of great set. I mean GMK BoW is just a reverse WoB.

How much does a maxkey mold cost? What me and many others want is ISO compatability in order to buy sets.
It just has to be done once, and all future set will benefit.

not interested in the hiragana alphas or the darker brown. is there any chance you could get maxkey to produce an alpha kit and modifiers in different colors? i guess the real barrier would be hitting moq which seems to be a minimum of 100 for them to produce a set. i'd love to see a tannenbaum green modifiers and tannenbaum beige modifiers as renders (from the swatch set in the op).

Actually, Maxkey doesn't appear to be making molds that durable for custom keys.  They've been telling designers that the custom molds can only be used for a limited number of times (800 sets).  There's more on this in the Maxkey Calm Depths thread:

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=90792.msg2518723#msg2518723

I don't know if anyone has asked them about the costs to make molds to the same specs (and durability) as their normal base set molds.

I know this wasn’t your intention at the beginning, but I think that if you want this to be successful, turning this isn’t a Maxkeys revision of SA Retro would attract a lot of attention. With the turn towards vintage-inspired custom keyboards here on GH at the moment, this could be the perfect timing for a retro set to pair with those boards. This could follow what was done for Maxkey Calm Depths, which also took an incredibly hard to get and inflated priced set and made it available to everyone again for like $120 bucks.

What do others think?

I'd wait a little while to run it because of all the group buys going on right now (look at all the GMK sets struggling to meet MOQ), but when this runs I'm in.
