Title: Found some Space Invader? keyboards
Post by: izzypizzy on Wed, 19 May 2010, 18:33:03
Hi everyone, I've posted a couple times but haven't written an introduction. My name's Isaac, I live in Los Angeles, I don't own any mechanical keyboards (well maybe now I do?), but I'm very intrigued by them, and hope to buy a cherry MX keyboard soon! (I game a lot, so I'm looking at blacks or reds, though browns are interesting as well).

Anyways, today I remembered that my dad has a bunch of old computers in his basement, which are easily 20+ years old, so he let me rummage through the stash to see if there were any good keyboards, and out of the 8 or so keyboards I found, I found 3 interesting ones (the rest all felt mushy, but I didn't really look into them too much) -

The top two are labeled in the back as NMB technologies, model #RT101+, and the one on the bottom is an Everex, model: Enhanced Keyboard, but it has a barcode sticker that says "KYBD_101_MECH_EVRX_STD".

Take note of the colored lettering on the alt, ctrl and shift keys.

They all have the same switch type, which from my reading, seems specific to NMB? Nicknamed Space Invader switches

I'm sorry I couldn't pull off more keycaps, I don't own a keycap puller, and I've read that these switches are tricky to get the keycaps off.

They feel nice to type on, from my very limited experience, they feel both tactile and clicky, they definitely make a clicking noise before they bottom out. They all have AT connectors too, I haven't tested them to see if they work because I don't have an AT adapter yet, but I plan on buying one.

I just wanted to share, are these a good find? How do these switches feel vs. other mechanicals? They feel and sound pretty great to me. What's the rollover with a keyboard like this?

Rollover test is a sticky.   Ignore the OP and go to the last page for the test link.

I'll give it a shot once I get an adapter, thanks.

There's some of those boards with clicky pink NMB switches at the library in my town, along with the Model M's.

Congratulations!
I found some double shots and a model F XT in a similar pile.

Thanks, I wish that I'd found something better, but you shoulda seen my face light up when I pressed those keys in the basement, never felt anything like it lol.

I have to say, I really dislike the huge enter key and tiny backspace key, what were they thinking?
