its like when the hitler parody videos were blocked by the movie company. Why would they do that? and elminate all that free advertizing they were getting?

Easy...find good song (via radio or whatever), download (single song, not album, not entire artist's collection), eventually if I feel like it it ends up as Song of the Week. In order to do that I've gotta find a YouTube video, original music video preferred, so if it ends up being weird I don't even know about it until I've already chosen the song as SoTW.

I screwed up, I had meant to do a song for each day this week, all ZZ Top, since I'm seeing them tomorrow (Friday evening), but I forgot. Oops.

I always said I wanted my first concert to be ZZ Top...and at the age of 20 it finally happened.

That was one hell of a show. Singing along to Gimme All Your Lovin, Sharp Dressed Man, Tush, Viva Las Vegas, Legs, Cheap Sunglasses and more...along with the vast majority of the crowd...highlight of my year.

Mind you, my ears are still ringing several hours later...guess that's a sign they did it well :)

ZZ Top? It's like like an IntelliStation Z Pro? lol.

Yeah, I don't listen to much contemporary bands.

One reason why I'd never go to a music concert is because of the noise. My ears sometimes ring even without lots of noise (you know, sometimes you'll be doing what ever, and then one of your ears will start to get a high-pitched ring, and then slowly subside). But there's other noises not just ringing, I get almost what sounds like a hard drive in my ears when it's really quiet at night. Oh no! I have deskstaritus!

I'd rather interpret it as a sign to pick up some musician's earplugs (ER-20s or whatever). Your hearing will thank you. With the level commonly found at concerts, this really is pretty much mandatory.

Perhaps...but since the majority of touring bands don't remotely interest me, I'm not exactly a big concert-goer lol.

The ringing is mostly gone now. Damn that was fun though...

I know some people who went to a Sunn O))) concert, and described to me how the noise of the bands concerts was such that they had to wear earplugs and feel the music as opposed to listening to it outright.

Ah, obscure experimental bands. How I'm glad I never got into them :P

I somewhat regret that when I was younger, I did not attend the Nana Mouskouri concerts when she visited my city. But that was a period when she was mostly singing current pop favorites, and I was mainly a fan of her earlier Hadjidakis material, so I would probably have regretted paying $50 or whatever for a ticket at that time as a struggling student.

I don't go to concerts. Why spend a lot of money to be in a crowded place where everybody screams and they play the music too loud? I'd rather just listen to the radio.

It's not the same. And it's fun. Maybe you should try it.

Similarly, I never thought I would like the theatre, but I've been a few times in recent years, and it is remarkably entertaining in a way that TV and cinema can't replicate. And there are lots of pretty, scantily clad actresses you get to see in the flesh. I saw The Producers at the theatre, before they remade the film. Never had so much fun. When the goose-stepping Nazi soldiers came on stage and they lowered mirrors so the audience got an overhead view of the Busby Berkeley style display, I nearly wet myself laughing.

Ulla had the best one-liner in the show. Best one-worder, in fact:

"Iiiiinturmiiishun!"

Everyone in the audience cracked up. I won't explain. Go see the show.

Ringing ears is invariably a sign of permanent ear damage. The ringing goes away, but the damage doesn't. Eventually the ringing won't go away, and you have tinnitus.

Julianne Moore has a fantastic monologue about ears ringing in Children of Men (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0206634/) after Clive is nearly blown up.

Quote
"You hear that ringing in your ears? That 'eeeee'?
That's your ear cells dying. You'll never be able to hear that frequency again. Enjoy it while you can."

It's not literally true, but a little inaccuracy saves a lot of explanation.

It's one concert. The only one I've been to in my life. I'm sure my hearing is fine (based on the fact that it's completely back to normal as far as I can tell).

There are people who do much, much worse things to their ears - Apple earbuds with the volume up as an example.

I went to a John Mayer concert recently and decided to wear earplugs.  The best concert decision I have ever made.  The music was much clearer and my ears felt fine after the show.

Many Years past, after a couple of drinks, my friend had the bright idea of going to watch an up-coming band in another pub. Everyone was quiet standing by the stage, the band entered and quickly started playing. In under one minute we were outside the pub cursing all people inside. Our faces and hair were soaked with spittle because those Punk-rockers' dance craze was to jump up and down while spitting at each other.

After that experience, I attended very few live shows/concerts/theatres etcetera etcetera. No doubt some are excellent/entertaining with lots of atmosphere, but just not pour moi.

When they have a hearing aid that's equalized for 20-20,000 Hz at +/- 1dB, they just MIGHT be worthy of consideration.

I'm not going to sacrifice linearity for amplitude. I'm 20-13,500 at +/- 1dB and 17,000-23,000 Hz +/-3 db according to my hearing specialist. The gap (hearing loss) from 13.5 to 17K is 100% caused by more than a decade of live music three times a week WITH EARPLUGS.

My wife did telephone customer support for the same decade, and she can't hear from her left ear. What a pair we make. What?

Hearing aids only amplify sound waves to the already lessened stereo cilia in your (cochlea?) So, it's not really a great way to fix anything. It's like a crutch, sure it'll help you walk, but won't fix your stride!

Oh... and there can be different issues for hearing loss, your tympanum could be damaged a bit -- swimming can do that, so, a less flexible tympanum disallows you to hear (usually) higher frequencies. They call that the mosquito ring or whatever, mosquitos actually have a lower pitch ring to their wings. Your ossicles also could be damaged, if that happens... good luck fixing tiny bones.

i have to admit there's something charming about france gall, even tho her music is kind of campy by today's standards.

An english version of this song appeared in Tarantino's double feature ("death proof"):

I don't like MP3s.

FLAC, WAV, or WMA (at high bitrate). But the original CDs are always the best.

I did actually pop a few MP3s on my 300PL, for some odd reason there is fuzzing (guess it's exposing the low quality of MP3 files)... everything else is fine though.

People who say they can actually hear the difference between FLAC and a truly high quality MP3 drive me up the god damned wall.

If you can hear a difference, get a better MP3 encoder.

i have a friend who went back to records (yes, records, apparently they not only still press records, but they're making some kind of comeback, even latest releases are coming out on records apparently) cuz he thinks the audio is better. I dont know if the audio is better, but i do think records are more fun to play than pressing a tiny button on a tiny mp3 player.

tubes on the other hand, yea they sound better to my ear than solid state amps, for music anyway.  that said, i still choose the convenience of solid state ('good enough') for both  my guitar and my music.

As much of a bull**** story as this sounds - I remember watching a Youtube video of a record player playing a song that sounded better than a CD rip I had of the same song. It wasn't that the CD rip had that sort of muffling or distortion that bad MP3s had - the video of the recording had a much richer sound to it.

Can't remember what it was though...

If it's a 256 bit-rate, that's usually, okay, HOWEVER, instruments with a high attack (like cymbals, hihats, harpsichords, etc) are affected the most by MP3 encoding. You actually can hear a difference with those types of things.
Otherwise all of my other music is usually fine.

Depends on the band. Some bands sound better live. Some that require lots of production sound much worse.

I prefer the IBM band (I'm not making this up).

Here's some of the tunes in high quality WAV format:

"Ever Onward" (IBM rally song):

"Hail To The IBM" (IBM anthem):

"March On With IBM":

I think my favourite is "march on with IBM". I like the piano! March on with IBM... we lead the way... because everyone else sucks. Here's the complete lyrics:
Quote
The fame of IBM
Spreads across the seven seas;
Our standards fly aloft,
Proudly waving in the breeze,
With T. J. Watson guiding us, we lead
    Throughout the world,
For peace and trade our banners are unfurled,
    Unfurled.

Chorus

March on with IBM. We lead the way!
Onward we'll ever go, in strong array;
Our thousands to the fore, nothing can stem,
Our march forever more, with IBM.

March on with IBM. Work hand in hand,
Stout hearted men go forth, in ev'ry land;
Our flags on ev'ry shore, we march with them,
On high forever more, for IBM.

Boredom saturation
It's a never ending clue
Isn't just to fill the time
When there's nothing else to do
She drove on out of New York
She had enough insane
And drivin' just though Texas two days
She ended up in L.A.
Shuffle it all
Shuffle it all, yeah
Shuffle it all
Pack up your life again
A pile of records spread out
The covers still look good
Picture here a Peter Tosh and he's
squatin' down and smokin' one
My dog dreaming is running
I see him twitch a paw
My woman playing Dr. Mar-i-o
On the TV all night long
Just another cigarette
Staring at the moon, yeah
Then I'm headin' off to bed
Sleepin' without you, yeah
Shuffle it all
Shuffle it all, yeah
Pack up your bags again
It's a long and winding road
Sure enjoy the view, yeah
If you want to see it
Just slow down
You're so welcome to come along
Lookin' for a tune to play
I'm gonna see it again
When the day is over
Try to write you 'bout the road
Feel the motors winding on
There ain't no news
If you see those old friends out there
Tell them that I send my love
Wake up, time to leave again
Try to find my shoes
Put the luggage in the van
Roll up your bag for two
Shuffle it all
Shuffle it all, yeah
Shuffle it all
Pack up your things again
Shuffle it all (Keep movin' along)
Shuffle it all (Keep movin' along)
Shuffle it all (Keep movin' along)
Pack up your life again
Keep on shufflin'

I don't go to concerts. Why spend a lot of money to be in a crowded place where everybody screams and they play the music too loud? I'd rather just listen to the radio.

I'm actually with MSW here (minus the radio part). I'm not a huge fan of concerts. Mind, some epic **** has happened at concerts that I've gone to but I still don't like them.

Not all shows are like that. Loud fans are one thing, and they are atypical at the type of shows I frequent (even the shows where the BAND itself is loud), in other words I don't go to Justin Bieber shows with screaming fantards.

Loud music, on the other hand ... I mean if you like bands that are loud, what can you really expect?

One of the loudest shows I have ever gone to was Mogwai at Metropolis in Mtl:

doesnt do it justice, practically destroyed the mic on my lx-3, but notice how everyone is enjoying the music for the most part. There is no way I could recreate this in my house.

conversely, I saw Damien Rice in Mtl as well, this show was AMAZING, and I could hear everything... to the point where he sings several popular tunes "unplugged" literally, he stands on the edge of the stage with his geet and belts it out:

(not my vids)

Notice the audience PARTICIPATION here.

I also recent saw The National at Massey Hall in Toronto, this was one of the best shows I have seen in ages, sit down tickets only.

Well if we're talking loud I've seen Slipknot and Slayer multiple times. I like loud metal but not enough to really want to keep going to concerts. As you know, Quebec is a death metal hub. Quo Vadis, Gorguts, Cryptopsy, etc. Seen em all, loved em all.

However, my favourite show was Necrophagist. My friend told me a story once, about how some years ago he went to see Necrophagist with around 8 other guys, some were 18, some were 17 at the time, and one was younger, around 15 IIRC. The bouncers weren't letting the 17-year-olds in. Mohammad Suicmez came out himself and persuaded the bouncers to let the 17s in (with the 18s who were allowed to enter anyway), and when he couldn't do anything about the 15 year-old, he personally refunded his ticket and gave him a Necrophagist hoodie. Right there.

That's awesome. In contrast, I've heard that Ted Nugent is a ****. My uncle who lives in the US went to see him once a couple of years back and when he was done his concert, he asked the crowd to "Thank Uncle Ted for playing for them", instead of thanking them for funding his life. I still think the man is a legend. A bit crazy, but still a legend. I definitely want to see him in concert before he gets too old to keep playing Stranglehold and Cat Scratch Fever.

Post by: gr1m on Thu, 29 July 2010, 23:06:08
The thing about audience participation is that I think it shouldn't advance past the headbanging stage. People who call out song recommendations as if the band modifies their schedule based on one random guy out of 60,000 in a sweat, smelly crowd, hardcore dancers, etc., annoy me.

Except when Killswitch Engage performs A Bid Farewell, that's when I actually like that the crowd sings along. Oh, and performance+crowd at any Lamb of God concert is amazing.

I could live my life without Ted Nugent for sure, but that's a rare and cool story re: Necrophagist.

Quebecers love their metal, for truth. That being said, I haven't seen THAT many metal shows (and to be honest im not the worlds hugest metal fan, and I prefer mathcore/experimetal metal to straight death metal). The Dillinger Escape Plan were probably the most intense show I have seen, at Foufounes. When I lived in Halifax, Ion Dissonance (who are from Mtl) toured with some friends of mine. They were tight, albeit a bit too meshuggah-esque. Those guys (meshuggah) are ****ing awesome, I happen to think "New millennium cyanide christ":

a) is the best title for a track EVAR.
b) is possibly the toughest song I have heard in my life.
c) definitely has the best music video.

Would it be racist to state that Swedes make even better music than they do furniture designs? ;)

Suprisingly, Ted Nugent is a notorious red neck, but still quite a guitarist.
Title: kishy's song of the week
Post by: gr1m on Thu, 29 July 2010, 23:35:25
Indeed. He thinks way too highly of himself as a guitarist IMO but it doesn't really matter because his music is great. I think his political views are BS as well. Claims people are pansies for not fighting in the army when he himself avoided Vietnam conscription. The man is a nut case (and so is his wife), but his hunting shows are entertaining and Stranglehold is brilliant. I've watched the Motor City Mayhem version of it and it's just insane.

Bit of an older post, I know, but I was just going through this thread...
Quote from: ricercar;195746
I'm not going to sacrifice linearity for amplitude. I'm 20-13,500 at +/- 1dB and 17,000-23,000 Hz +/-3 db according to my hearing specialist. The gap (hearing loss) from 13.5 to 17K is 100% caused by more than a decade of live music three times a week WITH EARPLUGS.

With earplugs?! Goodness.
Quote from: ricercar;195746
My wife did telephone customer support for the same decade, and she can't hear from her left ear. What a pair we make. What?

I sincerely hope monaural (one-sided) headsets have died out nowadays. You can understand things significantly better when you hear them over both ears. "Significant" in like 20 dB of less volume required or so.

Too bad I can't watch some of the vids here, stupid Youtuborders[tm]. ;-( (Youtube didn't bother to pay for public broadcasting rights for Germany, so a good bit of identified major label stuff in particular ends up blocked here. In many cases some generous soul will have uploaded another copy, but not always. I don't get it. I mean, it's free promotion, isn't it?)

Anyway, on to the early '80s again, this time watched from my side of the pond.

This from 1982. Radio hit, too (minus the intro, obviously).

(A band with some brilliant stuff in the early '80s before they went to lighter pop from '84 on, although their later albums still contain a few gems.)

Same year.

(Perfect album btw.)

A brief jump back to '78.

(No comments needed, I hope. Otherwise: Wikipedia time.)

I guess I could go on for hours, but catching a bit of sleep wouldn't hurt right now. And yeah, sorry, it's a bit UK-heavy right now. Maybe I should have slipped in some Kraftwerk or Scorpions or Alphaville. Ah well, maybe next time.

And finally, if you thought the '80s were over, nope. This from 2008.

(She's from New Zealand, but works in - have a guess... yep: London.)

from 1984: one of my favorites from their early days.  Cant find a good video for this, might put one together myself when I get some time (maybe just overlay it over life performance clips). THough I always thought this song would go well with wwii naval footage, for some reason.

I've often wondered why this song stuck with me so deeply.  I came across this old blog post about this song (http://"http://popsongs.wordpress.com/2007/04/25/harborcoat/), where some of the comments hit the nail on the head for me:

"I love how it starts with the chorus (without vocals), then goes into the first verse, then fakes going into the chorus, then 2nd verse and then finally the rewarding and beautiful chorus arrives."

"Their voices run parallel to each other throughout the piece; both of them essentially singing a different song that overlaps and collides in strange and beautiful ways."

Check it.  From my failed attempt at embedding a Youtube vid.

Quote from: TexasFlood
youtube seems to have changed the format of it's embedded code. As a workaround for now I just copied an old post and changed the unique number of the video.

thanks for the tip!

maybe vbulletin needs new [ youtube ] tags then that take the change into account?

easier way: in the embed code, replace all "?" with ";" and it posts fine. There should be two "?" to replace, right after the unique video number at the end of the URL.

get in the camaro, turn it up, and go cruising!

Technically, there is supposed to be a ? there, as that would generally signify the beginning of the url "Query string", the parameters of which should be separated by '&' or '&' (which is where you got your semi-colon from in the old embed code). This makes me think that vbulletin is broken (and youtube has finally fixed their embed code)

I just meant the singer's voice in the choruses.  That really seems to be what he's going for.  But yes, I will definitely agree that the song itself sounds nothing like Bowie.

Hah!  Three off topic posts in a row!  Success!

Im pretty sure he is referring to the chorus as well, since that is the only time the singer even remotely sounds like Mike Patton. The rest of the song sounds like a really cross between Monster Magnet and STP or something.
I have to say, TCV suck. I was a huge Kyuss fan and my interest decreases with each one of JH's endeavours.

ooooooooops DP (double post).

But I found something interesting on shallowND's wiki page:
Quote
It was rumored that Brad Davis of Fu Manchu had once blown out his pair of home speakers listening to Auto Body Crusher, although Davis himself has since denied this claim stating that they were only "almost" blown.

So that concurs with my findings. Off that album, the title track and "six foot foam skull" are the toughest songs imaginable.

I cant find a vid for SFFS, so "Auto Body Crusher" it is:

Are you talking to me? I didn't know actually being good at your instrument was a requirement for good music, in fact it has been proven that the opposite can easily be true:

look at DMB and Dream Theater, awesome musicians, gayest music ever.

Granted, SND is rough around the edges, but that was a sound that many (myself included) enjoy(ed). There is a lot of energy in that style of music. Also, it is not metal, this is considered sludge/noise/stoner ROCK.

Aww man, you don't like them?  Well alright.

I just absolutely love how the styles of the three players comes  together with Josh's basic song style.  And the lyrical content is soooo much better(deeper) than with QOTSA.

I can see how they definitely don't fit under the Stoner Rock category though, they've started something totally different.

My, there have been a few cool things posted here since I last checked this thread.

Rammstein for learning German, that's interesting... :D They've got to be the most well-known German band currently. But yeah, their lyrics certainly are easier to follow than those of, say, Wir Sind Helden (who have some which are nearly bursting with puns and stuff). Apparently there has also been non-negligible success with pop/chanson singer Annett Louisan. That reminds me... good ol' Hildegard Knef should be rather well-suited (here's an example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BGSHc1X60Y)).

If there is one language that invites musical learning assistance, I'd guess it's Italian, which tends to be spoken rather quickly in real life. Speaking of which, if you ever come across a copy of Alice's 1989 album Il sole nella pioggia (here's the title track / opener (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaAePCf1PLo)), I recommend it highly.

Its a sad day when even a classic song from the 80's wont be allowed on youtube without cutting it off after a minute and 40 seconds.  Bastards.  The full version wont allow embedding of course.

I think they really just hurt themselves if they dont allow low-quality versions to be embedded by fans.

That inspired me to look for the theme music from "Never Say Never Again". But of the two versions I saw, I couldn't find one with a decent video.

So I went looking for other songs performed by Lani Hall. I had already found several Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 selections on YouTube, but one of my favorites that I missed was "Like a Lover".

I listened to a few versions of that, and in one I found a comment about the original version of that song.

And I looked up information about the performer, Elis Regina. I found that she was an outspoken opponent of the Brazilian military regime of her time, and that she passed away at a relatively young age from drug abuse.

you never thought it was odd to hear a kick ass grunge tune about how 'salvation is free'?  I picked up on that right away.  Its not a coincidence, she's deeply catholic in her personal life, started out as a singer in church, is a true believer.
Once i knew that i picked up subtle catholic themes or phrasings in other songs as well. But yea, definitely social reform stuff too of course.

regardless, cranberries kicked ass well enough (and she kicked ass as a powerful and original singer well enough) that it never bothered me too much. If they had sucked it would have bothered me, lol.

Just google for 'dolores o'riordon religious' and you'll see its pretty well known. For instance, here's her pro-life position (http://whosforlife.blogspot.com/2006/05/dolores-oriordan.html).

As non religious as I am, when I hear the word salvation, I don't automatically think of salvation through Christ.  I equate it to freeing your mind and letting go of the things in your life that you let weigh you down.  But then again, I did a lot of drugs in college.  Maybe the song is aimed at me :p

I never used to pick up on cues like that until I dated my evangelical g/f for 3 years. Suddenly when i began to see the world (including pop culture) thru her eyes and got to know her filters, I realized how much cues like that actually mean for different demographics in our society.  For instance, come to think of it, my first cue about dolores' religiosity was actually the fact that my evang g/f would play the cranberries all the time, and I knew that she was generally against pop culture and pop music, so i figured there had to be a christian connex for her to be 'okay' with dolores.

I think I strongly associate certain songs with women or moments in time. Everytime i hear cranberries' "dreams" i'm transported to my evangelical g/f's dorm room and to one snuggle-session in particular. ;)  It was playing in the background and now she's permanently associated with it. So is that room, that moment in time.

I also associate cranberries' "promises" with this really cute asian chic i met at harvard once. I'm always reminded of her when I hear it. We didnt go out or anything but i was fascinated by her and that was the same weekend I bought the cranberries 'best of' cd at a used cd shop in harvard square.

Here's a Lesley Gore rarity, from a period when she was with a little-known label:

Some simple guitar.
Playing two guitars at once is certainly impressive: I noticed in the related videos a performance by this artist with another famous guitar legend:

Nice.

A friend of mine is a great player and mentioned Stanley Jordan once, saying I had to check him out.  Less than a month later I was testing a few DVD players from Fry's; both were open box returns.  Someone had left Stanley Jordan - Live in Montreal (http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Jordan-Live-Montreal-Festival/dp/B0000CG8HS) in one of them, so I put it on.  I watched the entire thing right there, just floored.

Listening to some Chris Potter tonight.

Pretty awesome bass clarinet solo (!) at 6:20:

This song reminds me of ch_123 and Welly, so I'm dedicating it to them:

I can't believe they had a guy in there cleaning windows while they were shooting their video. How rude.

I always **** that song up at norebang, but it is one of my favorites.  Also, Tom Petty has some of the greatest driving songs of ALL time.

I know all the lyrics to this song, and I know they're mostly wrong.

*sigh*...I might have to bring back the Song of the Week just because of how bad that previous one is.

Maybe vegan Canadians are more up your alley.

Robokrikit - we have similar taste in music. My fav Propogandhi song is still "Anti-Manifesto".

I have so many comments for so many of the songs posted here, but I'll just keep those to myself, and reply with songs.
