Title: Collecting things you don't even like..
Post by: tp4tissue on Sun, 05 May 2019, 11:52:52
NE1 have this issue ?

Sometimes, something kind of sort of belongs in a collection.. YET, you quite-dislike the item itself.

But for the sake of the collection.. there's this compulsion to acquire..

For empl,  Terminator - Genisys,  this was an awful film.. Yet, because there's already a terminators collection going..  There's that Need to haz all terminators

Gotta have a complete set.
Gotta get this only because it is almost what I collect and it is a great deal and I can't let it pass.
Gotta have this thing because it is historically significant.
Gotta get these because I can learn from them.
Gotta get this thing only to write about it on the Deskthority Wiki (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Main_Page).

Classic TP4 thread.

I have over 2 dozen bird's nests because they actually  *WERE*  so cool, and I hated to think that they were going to spontaneously disintegrate. Someday I will mount them in a box and display them on a wall.

There are so many things that I  *DO*  like, I don't have space in my life.

But directly to your question, in a music collection for example, what if you collected the entire output of a band, but in the end there are only 2 albums that really rate the top shelf?
That one is easy - rip them all to .MP3 and sell off all the dogs.

sometimes I get sick of looking at all the video games on my shelves. i don't play every one, and it's a huge taker of space. it's to the point where i basically need an entire room dedicated to putting my games in, and sometimes i think selling them all off would be way easier.

the worst thing about big collectors is they are adverse to selling, so many times they will die and their family just winds up getting rid of all the things they spent so much time collecting. the trick is getting past that feeling of attachment and eventually sell your collection off so you can enjoy the fruits, instead of having it sold cheaply or thrown away when you die.

Exactly this and I fall under this category. Look for a show on YouTube called 'Strange Inheritance'. Basically this happens all the time with big collectors where families have no direction of what to do with a deceased relatives possessions. Even with collections worth millions it is an absolutely expensive proposition to open a museum and auction companies make a killing when items are sold.

I don't collect games per se, but I just never get rid of them; consequently, I have every game and system I've ever owned (with the exception of a few games that have been lost or taken by my brother) since the NES. On the one hand, I know that I'll never play most of them again, but, on the other hand, I've had some of them for thirty years, so I *can't* get rid of them now. They take up a fair bit of space.

One thing that has been bothering me recently is that both my Xbox 360s are toast (one still functions slightly for media, but overheats when playing games. The other won't even turn on), so all those games are effectively paperweights at this point.

I can't think of something I collect just to have that I don't like though.

We did some spring cleaning last month. One of the rooms we tackled was our office (so that we can use it as an office again and not a storage room), and I got rid of half a bookcase of books, movies, CDs, and video games. As a bibliophile and retro-game enthusiast, it was difficult for me to get rid of some of the stuff at first, but once we started seeing the space we gained I got momentum and got rid of way more than I initially intended.
At one point found myself shoving a large Amazon box of books and games I told myself I'd never part with, and not even feeling an ounce of regret. A month later and I'm still looking for more stuff to haul out.

Can you help me with my closet please?  It's a cluttered disaster of things I think I would feel bad getting rid of.

In the collectors edition there's always that novelty item which you think is Actually Functional But then you open it up and it's just a decoration.

Don't you all remember the COD canteen?
