Title: Firefly Really Needs a 4K Remaster.
Post by: tp4tissue on Sun, 12 May 2019, 21:02:57

Firefly is shot On 35mm film. That can blow up to 8K resolution no problem.

Even if they cheap out and use the Current 2K  Digital Intermediate,  that would still be a major quality boost given new h265 + 1080p chroma.

The current bluray is a 3 Disc set. The episodes are ~20mbit. That is lower than even the vanilla bluray bitrate of ~40mbit.

There is a good deal of Grain, and at the current compression, it just eats into the texture detail much too much..

These screenshots are among the better still shots,  The bulk of the episode is much worse.

Reopening old wounds. They should have never cancelled off that show  :( but I digress, they should do it up proper in 4K. We need a viral campaign to get the ball rolling.

Serenity has a 4K disc, it's an upgrade over the vanilla bluray, but still 2K DI, not Tru-4K scan.  But heck , It's pretty gud'.

The regular series bluray is very soft at places, and you can tell the color grade was Rush.

NO.
Because every time they fiddle with it, they also can't help themselves but mess with it. We'll just fix this mistake or... While he's not Lucas, look how many times Star Wars has been alterred. Leave it be,k otherwise you may end up with Kaylee having pink hair or blue skin or something.

I have faith in Firefly, because the iterations while lazy, has still improved.

DVD image..  ~2002 quality.

On a scale of "The Walking Dead" to "The Wire" how worthy is it to actually watch Firefly?

I've gotten halfway through Firefly a couple times before I got bored and stopped watching,it's not any where near The Wire in pure excellence.

Tp4 would give up Ergodox for another season of Firefly w/ original cast

Is Ergodox an HBO show ?

Firefly was simply amazing television.

Imagine a western crossed with Star Wars, and you can start to imagine it.

It was one of the pillars is Joss Whedon's legend. It featured great acting from Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, and was the break out role for Summer Glau.

HIghly recommended, as well as Serenity, the feature length film that came out at least partly because Firefly's rabid fans pitched such a fit when Fox canceled Firefly way too soon.

Browncoats forever!

Joss Whedon for sure is riffing off Bebop and Outlaw Star.

However,  Everything is a riff off of something..

Originality aside,  it's a good iteration.

Yea, the DVD set is really good, (For DVD).  Because it's sourced from the same 2K DI as the bluray.

And it's a mature tech. The resolution is only 720x480, but due to temporal resolution, it visually looks much higher res than it is. You'd be hard pressed to notice the difference between the dvd and 720p.

Using a good upscaler, pretty good details. Taken from dvd, 720x480 -> 1920x1080 Episode 13.

Chroma  NGU sharp VH
Luma     NGU sharp VH x2 --> NGU sharp VH x2 --> 2D SSIM AR
Chroma 2, NGU sharp (med) --> NGU sharp (low)

Colors only correct in Chrome, firefox messes up the last png.

Having watched firefly many times, There's alot of bright clipping.. It looks intentional, but if they regrade it for HDR, we should have alot more highlight detail.

They are the same, the top image is upscaled to 1080p, the bottom image is the original size from the DVD.

Morena Baccarin.  Same actress from Deadpool.

Gonna need ur glasses for this one.

Serenity (2005) film,   Bluray vs UHD Bluray (tonemapped)

This is not a True 4K release, it's an Upscale from the 2K Intermediate just like the main series. So they're fundamentally the same resolution.

The UHD release clearly used more de-grain processing. Overall IN THIS CASE, the main quality boost comes from the Chroma Resolution which greatly enhances Textures // Fine-Detail // and Geometry
