Title: [IC] GMK N9 Ortholinear Add-on Kit - GB LIVE - awaiting thread approval
Post by: ttom on Tue, 28 May 2019, 10:36:53

(GMK render)

GB SEPTEMBER 12TH

Vendors and pricing:

MOQ: 150
EU: https://mykeyboard.eu/catalogue/gmk-n9-ortholinear-add-on-kit_1238/ / €41.99
NA: https://olkb.com/parts/gmk-n9 / $46.99

This is a very simple modifier kit with N9 base and CP legends, meant to work with sets with white and beige alphas, and most sets with alphas that have white legends.

Why a modifier only kit? Well many GMK sets don't have ortholinear support and some of those that do don't even reach MOQ. This set is in N9 due to its broad compatibility with many different alphas. I have tried to keep this set as minimal as possible while making sure that it supports as many different ortholinear keyboards as possible.

Renders:

Planck with GMK Monochrome alphas

Planck with GMK Space Cadet alphas

Preonic with Cherry MX black switches
(https://i.imgur.com/fFRIKYP.png)

To do:
- get a quote from GMK done
- contact vendors done
- commission a proper render provided there is enough interest and the full kit's keys are decided commissioned, waiting for them to be done! done
- set a GB date done, 09/12

Special thanks to:
- Jack from olkb for expressing interest in this set very early on
- keeb.io doing likewise and offering to buy this set in bulk
- David and Yuliia from mykeyboard.eu for all the help and bearing with me and my countless questions about gmk
- Oblotzky for the lovely renders

While In the past few years some ortho sets may have had trouble reaching MOQ, I can't say I've seen a single run that hasn't hit its MOQ for Ortho/40% in recent GB's.

Ortho has a big following now.

I do Like a lot of these "Mix and Match" add-on options that have been popping up though.  Lets people make there ideal set/colorway without blowing big $$$.

Basically what I'm saying is...I'd be in on this if it gets to GB.  :thumb:

Good to hear - and you're right. However, there are still a lot of sets that don't have ortho options so this kit should still be very helpful ;D

Have 2 40s/Ortho kits on the way, but I'd still be interested in picking up the N9 just for it's broad compatibility.

Plenty of people can pick up terminal, eclipse, SkIIdata, GMK nines, etc and add these in for ortho without a jarring color difference too.

Cool idea

I'd be interested if it got expanded. You can't cater to all layouts, but it would be nice if there was an R3 tab and an additional R4 shift.

Two R4 1.5 keys would also cater to Corne, Atreus, etc.

I am also thinking full icon mods would be flexible when used with weeb alphas, often sold separately, allowing to skip an expensive base kit.

I joined the GMK blank GB for N9 mods, but they didn't make MOQ on Corne thumb keys, so I went with CR instead. Depending on the price I would be in for this.

Thanks for the feedback - I appreciate it a lot. A R3 tab was intended, seems like I did two R2's by accident on the render and will fix that later.

As for the other extra keys - I will make a form in a couple days asking about extra keys and will be sure to include those.

Thanks - N9 is a really great colour because of its broad compatibility so as an add-on kit it works wonderfully.

I’d be in if the legend color was CP but not for WS1. The original Ivan dolch as well as Kekkon’s re-run (which I’d personally want to pair these with) both used CP, while WS1 was used by Originative on their version of dolch.

Yes this is great. I'm in the GMK Blanks buy for N9 1Us, but even though I'd be in for legended mods.

I'd maybe consider CP rather than WS1 as I think it'll go with more kits, WS1 is very white.
Does it really need tilde and backslash keys, don't most GMK kits come with these already? Feels like not many people would want/need/use these keys but I could be wrong.
An R4 "command" or "super" and/or "fn" key would be nice to give Mac users a 3rd modifier and to give people a few more options with their layer keys.

I'll be doing a secondary form in a day or two to decide the legend colour along with some extra keys to add.

As for the tilde and backslash keys, though they are in the GMK sets many would prefer to have their whole outer layer of keys all the same colour; it's just a lot more satisfying.

Had someone on reddit ask me about that too. I’ll make a poll in a day or two about that among other things.

Another vote for 2 2u space bars!
Also I missed the GMK blanks GB, so would not mind if there is a blank ortho version of this.

Are all Row 4 blanks convex "spacebars"?

Interested based on price since I already have a ton of blanks ordered for this exact thing.

Maybe a less-white white would be more applicable here. Something like CP.

Check the poll I posted. Currently it’s 70% voting for CP, 30% for WS1 - looking like it’ll change to that.

Wow, this is progressing really fast, nice one, it's looking really nice now.

Question: I don't know what options GMK have for ortho keys, but are you set on having text + icons on tab and enter keys, while just text on the others? I'm not against it, just wondered what the rational was?

Honestly, I just took the general format that all the previous ortholinear sets that I researched have taken, for the sake of standardisation. The only other keys I could see having an icon would be shift possibly but in my opinion it would still be a bit out of place.

Also - it'll look even nicer once I get some proper renders :)

However, less than a third wanted the two 1.5u keys so I likely will not add them for the time being to keep the price down.

That's too bad. I guess I'm out. GL with GB.

I think I'll do a poll later today asking how many people wouldn't buy if 1.5u keys weren't included. I don't want to exclude too many people.

As for R3 Caps? Who actually uses dedicated caps on any layout, let alone ortho?

My thoughts exactly. The truth is, if there exists a layout, somebody somewhere will be using it... But it's not realistic to support all of them.

Is it possible to have 4x R4 keys which aren't nav arrows? Non-default planck layouts & the atreus for example don't have arrows on the lower right side.

There's already 11 non arrow keys for R4 which should be enough.

It's enough for someone using MIT layout or 2x2u layout. Not enough for Grid layout users.

Still very interested tho

I registered just to say how useful this would be.  I've just spent a couple days looking for ortho cherry profile sets and it's frustrating how you're forced to'mix and match from multiple sets.  I hope this becomes reality.

Does he know? He doesn't usually do pre-orders let alone proxy GBs.

I would assume Jack wouldn't take this on without having his shipping lined up, Rev. 6.x PCB troubles aside.

If I can score another set of OG Cherry POS alphas I'll definitely be in.

jack will be the proxy for this but to my knowledge mykeyboard is doing most of the logistical work. HOWEVER, keeb.io is purchasing a lot of these and you should be able to get the set from them once it's shipped.

there's an R3 and R4 enter, what more would you have liked? you can put these keycaps anywhere on your ortho board, it doesn't have to be exactly as in the renders - that's why there are many duplicate keys in different rows.

Makes a lot of sense. Enter on tap, shift on hold. (Or CTRL in my case)

I am 100% in. Compared to many 40% GMK addon kits, this is a lot more value.

The point is, if I want keycaps with incorrect legends, I might as well stick to all the 1u keys in other Base + Novelties kit.
I understand you guys want to keep the cost down, but this kinda defeat the point of an ortho-only set.
Anyway, what I’d prefer is something like this (without the alphas of course):

As a regular ortho user, I have to say: That is one opinionated ortho layout. You guys actually put the Enter key in the right Shift location?

Weird.

I feel like this kit is meant to be more of an accent ortho Kit. Meant to work with a variety of other existing base sets. Not a stand alone kit minus Alphas.

GMK isn’t cheap (obviously) so a kit like that would drive the price up.

But noting on your first point, R3 and R4 Enter is petty much as standard as it gets on standard (12-Column) ortho layouts.

What key legends are you focusing on being “incorrect”?

+2. Layout supported is also almost perfect. I personally have ~ instead of ESC on R3, but ESC is also fine.
Re: Big Bang kit: it seems to only support R3 and R4 Enter, so I don't see the point of claiming that it is better. The only semi-useful keys I see in that layout are double ctrl/alt/meta/code to replace the cursor keys

Say what...? As far as my limited otrho knowledge goes, that's the standard location for the Enter. That's where I always had it on my Preonic and an accented R4 1u Enter was included in all GMK ortho sets I have.

Don't take my word for it, just do an image search ;)

This is quite a common plank/preonic layout. For the 12X4 or 12X5 at least. Well, i've been putting the enter there ever since I've started using orthos. Where do you put your enter key?
Edit: and what's your regular 'ortho'?

I use full grid layout, so right below 'B', next to Spacebar.
Because, you know, thumb keys and all that.

So which row would that be in GMK profile?

R4.
I never used a Planck before, so I have no idea about their default layout.
Mostly I'm just surprised there's only one R3 1.0u Shift in this set.

Sigh, my edit wasn't fast enough for your reply.
Mostly I'm just surprised there's only one R4 1.0u Shift in this set.
But that's fine. I guess I never realized how popular the default Planck layout is until now.
I can accept that this set is not for me.
Cheers.

Personally I would have liked a second R4 shift as well, but I can work around that.

Is it too late to add a 1u r3 Ctrl or ambiguous legend like Data or Read (both molds exist) to the kit?

Thanks for considering!

PS: GMK does allow multiple quotes up to a certain limit.

MT3 ortho kits are sensible, providing two R4 Shift keys & one R3 Enter. That's how I like my GMK ortho sets too. Enter belongs on R3 or higher as with ISO keyboards.

Unfortunately it's too late - earlier on in the ic I had several polls for extra keys to add to the set and this didn't come up :/

However the GB date is now set for September 12th and will run for a month until October 12th ;D

Yeah. That's on me for not bringing it up. Fortunately I have some blanks coming.

Will be joining on day 1. Thanks for making this kit!

i didn't mention it here, but the gb started a few days ago. still awaiting for thread approval so i'm just bumping this.

keeb.io is also purchasing a large number of extras so MOQ should not really be a problem with this set. additionally I may have some news in the coming few days to do with some updates to this kit :D
