Title: XDA keycaps sets
Post by: phinix on Thu, 20 June 2019, 07:09:02
XDA is such a nice profile.
Why we do not see more sets in it?

I guess it a love it or hate it thing. Definitely takes more getting used to the more sculpted GMK or SA keycaps given that the keys are all flat. I must say thick PBT is quite nice though.

I've got some on a Novatouched Leopold FC660C at the moment, (https://imgur.com/a/LeF7Of7 (https://imgur.com/a/LeF7Of7)) and I find them really nice, and with a nicer sound, but I'm definitely making more typos than usual. I guess time will tell if its worth it or not.

I really wanna do an mid/late 90's theme'd build with a XDA set. Pretty uninspired, I know- but I still want one. I always felt like Canvas was best for it but I'll just have to wait for something else to come my way.

Its hard to pick colors for XDA, but I think there are few sets that could look nice in XDA.

I make more typos on XDA than any other profile I own.  I think it's because the gap between keys is rather small.  I have to slow down to use the profile.  I don't mind, but many people do.

I tried DSA. It is hard to get used to coming from cherry gave up after that feels wrong to type on it even though its probably better for ergonomics.

Funny you mentioned this - now I know I'm not alone. I like to type on it, very subtle texture on top surface is enough for me (I prefer smooth/shiny caps), but for some reason I make more mistakes. Like you mentioned, size of top surface is a bit bigger than other profiles and it makes the gap smaller, so some times I hit other key.

I tried DSA. It is hard to get used to coming from cherry gave up after that feels wrong to type on it even though its probably better for ergonomics.

Exact same experience - I remember my first and last DSA set - I waited for it so long, it was DSA Retro (Commodore theme), then when it arrived I was sooo surprised and disappointed that I took it off after few weeks. Just couldn't stand those edges, kept hitting many keys at once, mistype, terrible. This put me off and never came back to DSA. I gave it a try for few weeks, thought I'm going to adjust and get used to it, but I didn't. Didn't work for me at all. It was frustrating to type on those.

Today, I have mounted XDA on my Topre 55g for a first time. Feels cool, topre always felt great, it's my favourite switch.
I used to use SA on topre 55g, XDA is first set I'm trying as second one. It is not Canvas (awaiting that one to be shipped next month from Massdrop), it is some cheaper set from Amazon, but feels nice.
Again, making some mistakes, as I haven't used XDA for few months, but it waaaay better experience than DSA.
I gotta say, XDA feels wee better on Topre 55g, than on Tealios v2 I used to use. I was hasitating, as thought that such a low profile, lighter cap compared to SA, will feel a bit too light, but it's fine.
Anyway, XDA will be my profile to use on both - topre and Tealios. These are just two switches I use.

Why we do not see more sets in it?

Not many people like medium profile and flat and fat.

I want to try XDA again, but i have been really enjoying sculpted since i abandoned DSA. Maybe if a super pretty set comes along ill go back in.

I quite like them. Typing on them right now, on 55g Topre.
I love shiny finish of SA, but XDA have such a subtle texture that it feels great under my fingertips, plus on topre 55g they bump so amazingly, love it.
Uniform profile and bigger top surface make this set a bit harder to get used to it, once jumped from SA or cherry, but it is still great.
Can't wait to XDA Canvas be delivered next month from Massdrop/Drop :D

I noticed too that you get a good feeling of switches with XDA keys. SA tends to dampen that feeling quite a bit and produce their own noise too... (and i am on that XDA Canvas drop too ! Cant wait).
My favorite is the "squared" variant of XDA, called XDAS, there are some very good quality caps with a nice silky surface (not too rough, just perfect)..

I just picked up a KBD67 that comes with XDA caps. The look pretty good. I hoping the typing experience is good as well.

XDA looks better than Cherry. Cherry types better than XDA. For me personally, XDA is the worst for typing.

When it comes to both looks and comfort, MT3 is the winner for me.

It's a bit weird to type on them, needs some time to get used to it.
I've been using XDA in last 3 months and still trying to get used to it ;D
