Title: Why Do Modern Shoes Look Like Socks?
Post by: Kavik on Tue, 13 August 2019, 09:24:22
Modern sneakers look like cotton cloth, basically a big sock with rubber on the bottom. Is this for comfort or just horrible fashion?

There are lots of sneakers that arn't cloth,  so, if you just don't like cloth, there are alternatives.

If you're going purely by looks, then you can make any number of uninformed assumptions about anything.

Have you tried on the accused sock-shoes? You'd quickly realize they are not cotton, and are comfortable, breathable, and conform to the shape of your foot without the bulk, weight, and poor breathability of traditionally constructed shoes with thick paneling and stitching.

Just put your feet in them and figure it out yourself.

Man, people are defensive about their sock shoes.

I was wondering because I buy one shoe, the New Balance 860 series, and the new versions (v9 and to a lesser extent the v10) have adopted this look. I wasn't sure if NB is caving to this bad fashion or if there's some utility to it.

I must say this but...

High heels suck. They are awful. My feet are very crooked and messed up. so it literally hurts to walk in tem or even be in them. During a graduation ceremony, i had so much pain in my feet that i went "You know what? #### This. And so i took them off and went barefoot until 11:00.

Ladies, please wear dress shoes.

Probably more cost effective for companies to make shoe uppers out of T shirts than pleather etc. That said, I have a pair of Nikes for running that are like that, and while I wouldn't wear them for anything else they are remarkably comfortable. They do look odd, but like others have said they are incredible for wicking, as well as have high breathability, and are very light weight.

Never worn "sock shoes", but I swear by canvas-top boat shoes. The options for comfortable, supportive footwear are not great when you are dirt poor and have what one person has called "hobbit feet." (To prove a point: I typically need to go up half a size and get a wide for my feet to not feel squeezed along the sides. Further to the point: one person saw my bare feet and asked if I had opposable toes. Yes, my feet are so wide and spread out that my big toe looks like a foot-thumb. And shockingly enough, I don't have flat feet...)

Considering I live in Missouri, where the summers are searing and humid, the winters are bitter and blowly, and spring and fall are pretty much 3 months straight of rain and temperatures that are in need of a heavy-duty mood stabilizer, these shoes never feel hot, never feel cold, are easy enough to keep dry and don't look like I'm wearing technicolor vomit at that (they're a tactful navy blue, which goes well with my usual "black and gray with a touch of heather and white" outfits). And boat shoes in general are super comfy for my mutant feet. It's possible that "sock shoes" are this for runners, only with the typical technicolor vomit treatment that so many people demand.

I sometimes forget what size my feet are so I'm always kicking stuff.  Vulcanized midsole or boots protect my footsies, though those shoe socks seem to be nice and airy.  I reckon.
