Title: tldr; What did I miss?
Post by: _rubik on Sun, 25 August 2019, 17:39:57
For various reason, I've been out of the hobby for ~18 months now. We all know, though, that once the keyboard bug has bitten, it'll never let go.

For my sanity: what have I missed? Any important drama / projects that have changed the hobby? Anything I should have my eye on now looking forwards?

Feel free to rtfm me and link an important thread -- no need to transcribe everything.

Never realized you left... which should tell you something about how long I've been out of it. Welcome back!

Gasket mount is being used in a few custom kits. Topre released their new line of Realforce keyboards. That's about it?

Polycarb is hugely popular now, gasket mount is basically becoming the standard for customs, keycult is huge and as prominent as tgr now. Gateron inks are the best new linears, smooth as tealios and sounds deeper and better. Gmk sets never fail anymore, they are reach moq.

lot_lizard re-emerged for a nanosecond a few months ago but immediately went dark again.

You're not the first to bring this up -- do we actually think this is a better alternative, or is this just the new hot design fad?

I think it's a fad.

Some other things you might have missed

If you follow Topre:

Are Gat Inks really that good? I thought they were just Gat Blacks that look slightly different. Is there a material difference that helps?

I saw that crazy TGR Jane v2 build built with inks. Wasn't surprised when I they were brought up in this thread. I'll have to get my hands on some samples

Gasket mount is popular, as the main benefit of it is isolating the sound to the switches and the plate. Polycarb is the new endgame. Normal layouts are going by the wayside in favor of stuff like the TGR Alice. Keycult is the Rolex of this community now. Gateron has gotten much better with their Ink switches, Holy Pandas have become common place. Zeal redid the molds of his switches, so Zeal v2s are incredible tactile and linear switches. Plastic plates have become more popular, with many people opting for POM, Polycarb, and PBT plates over metals. GMK sets are just guaranteed once they hit GB (Source: Handarbeit). ePBT has gotten a lot better, and are making tons of sets.

That makes more sense now -- didn't fully understand why we were headed down this path.

Keycult is the Rolex of this community now.

Damn; shoulda gone in on the no.1 when I had the chance...

Tons of new members in the community now, especially after a relatively big debacle over the rising price of certain keyboards (NE $3000 jane v2s avail?)

As others have pointed out, 2019 is the year of the polycarb gasket mount.

Brocaps is going to cease their current ops to venture into something new (still kb related afaik)

Clack came back for a short week of sales

Keycon in NY was lit this year

The market for high end boards is increasing at a pretty healthy rate, allowing more and more people to enter the high end custom marke, which is great IMO.

That's all that has come to mind anyway

Is it just me or has classifieds in GH really slowed down? I remember being way more active back then

Mechmarket reaches a way wider audience, so I think a lotta people are leaning towards that marketplace
