Hello everybody
This is the Interest Check for GMK Midnight Rainbow, A dark but colourful set, designed to be the showpiece of your board.

Design & Inspiration
This idea originally began to form in the back of my head in 2017; some of you may remember the old run of GMK Rainbow on zFrontier (https://en.zfrontier.com/products/gmk-rainbow). This was a set that divided opinion, and is rarely talked about today in the western community, but still managed to make MOQ when the community was significantly smaller. I wanted to pay homage to the set, but also bring a modern, more usable set for the majority of boards. The main idea was to tone it down, and bring some clarity and order to the colours.
However; as happens with many projects, this fell by the wayside, and it was only when I saw the amazing festivities of the Manchester Pride (https://www.manchesterpride.com) event a few weeks ago that I was reminded and re-inspired to bring this set to life.
Designed to be the showpiece of your board and highlight the details of your case. A flashy set that remains demure, and controlled. An experiment and flirtation in artistic expression that results in a Bold, but secure design. Something that pays homage to the original Rainbow set, and also supports the Pride movement;

Kit Design
Base
This kit supports all the most popular custom keyboard layouts from standard TKLs to 65%, WKL bottom rows, HHKB, a numpad and more. There is also UK ISO support in the base kit (as I’m an ISO user).
Due to the nature of the colourway some usual key duplication allows further kit optimisation (Mod coloured \| on ANSI for example).
Spacebars
A small kit designed to give split board users the ability to adequately cover the bottom row, as well as an extra B key for those Alice type layouts.

As you can see, the gradient effect is mostly fine, except for three keys that would be better off with a different color: Fn in green, Scroll Lock (or Prtsc) and Insert in Purple. Perhaps the arrows would look better in blue as well (IMHO, WDIKAA).
I'll be the first to agree that tending to each and every possible variation in color due to differing layouts is, essentially, an impossible task, but at least a list of the most frequent color variations for common keys should be compiled and considered for addition (probably in a separate kit).

There's elegance in subtlety. The set is classy to the point where I don't feel like it needs to be in your face to sell the design vision. Of course a cluttered cap will feature more color, but icon mods would elevate the sophistication of it and add a touch of character and make it more graceful.

I was also wondering what the red R1 1u pipe key was for as well as seconding crd's sentiments on adding a purple R1 1u grave key.
As it is the only one showing a full "Control" modifier compared to all the other "Ctrl" modifiers, is it safe to assume it was an oversight in keeping it fully spelled out for your J-02 render?
Lastly, will there be corresponding function keys available that reflect the side cluster as shown in your J-01 render?

As you can see, the gradient effect is mostly fine, except for three keys that would be better off with a different color: Fn in green, Scroll Lock (or Prtsc) and Insert in Purple. Perhaps the arrows would look better in blue as well (IMHO, WDIKAA).

As you say I won’t get it perfect for every layout and the current version is based on 60/65/TKL/mini1800/1800/full-size. Where I can make simple accommodations I will do. The arrows most specifically may have some revision based on feedback.

The pipe key in purple should be Grave - great spot.
Correct, slight error on the J-02 render. I’ll berate the guy responsible :)
The F1 keys will be as per the main kit. That render is from an earlier design phase and for illustration only.

Potentially nutty idea here: how about making the whole nav cluster (13 keys) blue, and have the keys in the numpad sport the remaining four colors (green, yellow, orange, red) on each column from left to right? That would ease up the transition from purple to blue on fullsize and TKL keyboards, AND simplify quite a bit the same on compact (75% and under) layouts. We'd still need a green Fn key and purple versions of PrtSc, Scroll Lock and Insert, though (plus the special needs keys for the supra-R1 row of the 1800 layouts).

This is not correct.
Custom colors do not increase the price scaling, but amount of colors does.
Same amount of keys using the same amount of colors stock vs custom will be the same price, but increasing the amount of colors means increasing the price scaling.

There have been some solid ideas for tweaks to the kits (and some outlandish ones
) but I’ll take all the feedback on board and see where I can compromise and make positive improvements whilst keeping the core ideal the same. I’ll also post a feedback form and some more renders as well as some signature images for here during the update as well.

Personally I don’t intend to make any profit from anything I do in the hobby; whether that be this GB, my board GBs or streaming. This means there won’t be any proceeds from my perspective; other than to cover the costs I’ve outlaid on renders etc in advance.
But support for a cause doesn’t always mean donating money. Visibility, awareness, discussion, acceptance etc are all valid promotion. This set was inspired by the Manchester Pride movement as I’m pretty sure I mentioned in the OC. I’ll go back and check now.

I think that is pretty rare! It’s not something I’m looking to add to the set I’m afraid

Icon mods dont show off enough of the colours - test renders looked strange - this will be icon and text
There's elegance in subtlety. The set is classy to the point where I don't feel like it needs to be in your face to sell the design vision. Of course a cluttered cap will feature more color, but icon mods would elevate the sophistication of it and add a touch of character and make it more graceful.
Be confident in your design, you don't need to scream it out. 🙏

Sadly that kit wouldn’t make MOQ. ISO will be covered but Azerty is one of the smaller subsets of ISO users. If I ever run a keyset in KAT I will def include it then

Any updates on a date for the gb?Still targeting H1 next year. Mike from NovelKeys has some dates in mind and we will share in due course. Likely to do a large update in January with revised kits, legends etc based on a feedback form which will launch this weekend

Perhaps you should run your own sets with icon mods before asking others to do so 24/7. Nines didn't have Icon mods (and hey, good thing, I wouldn't have bought it if it had), Firefly not either if I recall. Just my 2 cents :)

All blank keycaps in the Spacebar kit will be convex, right? (Not the B, of course.)Speaking of the spacebar kit, I believe a 2u spacebar is much more useful than a 1.75u spacebar. In fact, I think the latter only appeared on a few 40% boards that had limited runs, whereas 2u is used on Planck, Alice etc.
For that reason, I suggest replacing the 1.75u spacebar with a 2u one.
Or add a 2.00c and keep the 1.75c

I've seen it mentioned multiple times on this forum that splitting the numberpad on its own actually doesn't reduce the price of the overall base kit much, and ultimately raises the costs substantially for those who actually want the numpad as well.

On another point, I think I will get this. I love the dark side of the moon vibes.
Such that I would change the Esc key, with my own black with white text keycap from another set; or if I can be bothered, commission a custom black keycap with a white triangle outline on it, to really embrace the prism of light theme.

I don't know how I feel about the diagonal to vertical pattern transition across the nav and numpad though. It's jarring enough to the point that I'd probably favour this theme on boards smaller than a TKL personally.

I have to say I disagree with this. We read left to right and list the colors red to orange, etc, to purple. I do, however, support the previous mentioned notion of an alternative escape key with white legends. I wouldn’t mind alternative white legend caps for enter and the arrow cluster as well.
One other thing: it looks clunky that the rainbow goes from diagonal in the alphas to vertical stripes in the numpad, etc. I know there isn’t a great way to do those areas diagonally the same was as the alphas, but there’s gotta be a better way.

As he mentioned, the inspiration for this was Pride, and the flag colours are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, in that order.

This is the set as is. It’s a peak Month for Group Buys and Covid19 has impacted peoples spending power. As such I took the decision to not add anything unnecessary to the GB to keep it simpler for the vendors.
I did have some ideas for pride novelties but after thinking about them some more it did feel a little crass so better for the set to speak for itself IMO. There are some artisan collaborations as well as cables and deskmats so this feels like it covers all the bases for me
