Title: Market value of new Model F (AT)?
Post by: mrbill on Fri, 04 June 2010, 14:43:50
I've got this Model F (AT) that arrived "new in original box", and I've used it for less than a half hour since then.  Where can I find a good reference as to what to ask for it, as I now want to sell/trade it?

Worthless junk... people here wouldn't give more than a mere $450 for a NIB Model F.

Seriously.  I want it to go to a good home (someone on here), but I don't want to rip someone off or get ripped off myself.

Would love to trade it for another Filco brown cherry tenkeyless, or even a Topre, but I have no idea if it's even worth that much.

Woah.  Well, it's new/unused, other than the 30 minutes or so I had it plugged in to test out, as far as I can tell.

I certainly wouldn't feel right asking for anywhere near $450; that's just insane.
If anybody's interested in working out a trade or sale deal, let me know.

Trade it for an HHKB (+cash, optionally) or something.

HHKB/Realforce swap sounds about right.  The ones Clicky was selling had the box, warranty card, wrapped in plastic, all that good stuff.
I see a few scuffs on the back but not sure if that's your camera.

I'll have to look at it again when I get home, but I'm pretty sure that's the camera.  Can take better pictures if I haul it to the desk where I have my good lighting setup.

I'd be happy with a straight swap for a tenkeyless Topre, even a lightly-used one.  I'm not picky about "perfect".

Mrbill, out of curiosity, have you ever been registered on a site nick-named "HBOFF"?

Come on guys, everyone knows they're really worth $5...

(I really doubt this is working)

$7

Nah, make it $20, but that's my final offer!

Show pictures of the box and such. People like that. You'll probably get offers if it looks the real deal.

Edit: updated pictures.

Nope.  The only other forums I spend a lot of time on are Metafilter and (not as much as I used to) Something Awful.

Edit: and I'm always "mrbill", "wcbtx", or "billbradford".  I'm "mr_bill" on IRC, although I've not hung out on EFNet much since '98; some friends and I run a private network.

They're not worth anything.

I suggest he donate his worthless 84-key Model F to a worthy charity (mine).

I will make sure the keyboard goes to a sick child in a 3rd world country to help increase PC literacy etc.

*sniffle sniffle* If I still had the Peerless, I'd donate it to your charity!

Seems to be the real $400+ deal..looks pristine and complete, congrats man!

That would be approximately equal to an HHKB or Topre + a Filco  (both NIB)

Pics of cord, box and any extras with it would be good.  A board that is 95% mint might be 10-25% of the value of a mint complete new one.  It's that last 5% that makes most of the value in a Mint/NOS purchase with anything collectible.

Really scrutinize it's condition to be sure there aren't small surprises.  These boards are well built enough that they can be used on a limited basis for years and appear new.  But congrats on owning such a great board in such good condition!  You'll have no problem selling/trading it.

I'm sorry, sick children in 3rd world countries prefer only to type on 84-key AT Model F keyboards in pristine condition.  :)

Or trade it for a used M15 if you like BS. Both sell for the $400-$500 range, though M15s are on the way up.

Actually M15's have been selling for considerably more but Webwit just happened to hit a home run when he got his.  I would value an M15 at $800 minimum.

?  Haven't seen that with the Model M, Model M Space Saving OR the Model F AT.  Or the Filco, Realforce, Das......

Realforce, Das, Filco... these are all recents you can still buy.  An ATF is a vintage collectible, another league.

That is the way collectibles work - if it's Mint in original package, complete with everything, it's a whole other league above opened, less than mint.

1978 Vinyl cape Jawa, loose played with - about $10
1978 Vinyl cape Jawa, MIP - One went for $25k in the 1990's, not sure about now.  Lots of fakes have hurt their value.

Old Gillette razors, open clean condition are $10-40 for most of them, MIP are hundreds

Vintage Hotwheels used $5-100, MIP... hundreds to thousands.

1970's Lego playsets complete, sealed vs opened and played with... I rest my case.  :)

Quick, find another mint Model F! :p

I know, I've been kicking my self repeatedly for not acting fast enough on a $60 near mint AT-F.  I hesitated as someone else picked it off.

But the rules of collectibles apply to keyboards as well.  Vintage is another league when you can find NIB.

Yeah, I'm all too familiar with ebay standards.

This isn't NIB by any stretch of the imagination:

Item is worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

No one seemed very interested in this AT-F:

Unused IBM AT Keyboard (http://cgi.ebay.com/Unused-Original-IBM-Keyboard-w-Original-Packaging-/280507270755?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item414f894663)

So it appears that there are still NIB AT-F boards out there.   I've now heard of people obtaining these for a low of $40 to a high of $450 here in the states.

I'd love to have a NIB AT-F.   Just not sure what I'm willing to spend for one.....

Except for me :) We'll have to see how "like-new" it is though.

At least I know that I'm not getting another one of these:

High-res pictures of the keyboard; you can click through and hit "All Sizes" for up to 6MP versions:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrbill/sets/72157624205315960/detail/

There is a "smudge" on the back of the board to the upper right of the label; it looks more like a color defect in the plastic and isn't a scrape/scuff as far as I can tell.  There's also a tiny nick to the bottom left of the label (shown in the pictures).

Everything else is pristine and mint and unused as far as I can tell.  I only have the keyboard, the box, the styrofoam, and the plastic bag.

I'm open to a sale or full/partial trades (Topre tenkeyless board, older Intel-based Mac Mini, etc).  I'll consider anything within reason; I like gadgets.

Wow, nice keyboard and great pictures.

Oh no, they pulled the old ship it in the original box trick. I've had that happen too.

I *am* looking for a DSLR camera (to replace the S3 IS I took these pics with).  Something slightly older, 5-6MP; I don't need fancy.

Hey that's a real nifty find!

I'd just keep it if I were you.

I actually want a Model F AT; but since I'll be modding it, don't want a new one, nor pay a large amount for it (my experiments can and do go wrong). I'm hoping to pull a kishy and find one for free.

If Japan pull out of recession and the international keyboard collectors’ communities keep growing, I think the NIB M15/Model F AT will be worth more than $1000.

Then the day before Mrbilll puts his keyboard on ebay, some guy finds a warehouse with 5000 NIB Model F ATs and sells them for $25 a pop.
