Title: [IC] Acrylic Discipline 65% Case (On hold - COVID 19)
Post by: HoodrowThrillson on Tue, 01 October 2019, 13:52:41
Acrylic Discipline 65% Case
Email Notification Signup (https://mailchi.mp/52c3604eda5d/acrylicdiscipline)
GB Starts ON HOLD DUE TO COVID 19

Pricing:
Full case: $50 shipped to CONUS (add $10 for intl)
Partial case: $30 shipped to CONUS (add $10 for intl)

Difference between full and partial case:
Full case is the one that is pictures, it utilizes the original mounting points of the case. If you Discipline is already assembled, you will need to desolder the switches in order to use this case.

Partial case is for those that have already built their Discipline but want to add a little bit of flair to it. It is similar to the full case; however, it will only cover the exposed electronic portion and the bottom most layer between the PCB and bottom piece.

I highly recommend going with the full case since it looks amazing, adds a bit of heft, and if you've never desoldered before it's a good time to learn (it takes practice)

Colored layer: Single layer of acrylic that is a different color other than clear (the layer between the plate and PCB)
We will be offering clear, white, and black (all at no additional cost)

Example of what it'll potentially look like

Problem I ran into when building proto which will be fixed in final revision
1) Larger stabs wouldn't fix (IE: Everglides)
2) Bottom row was only able to do Tada68 layout (as seen in unbuilt proto pictures)

Something like that in terms of high quality (but higher price) would be really interesting.

I can attest to Worldspawn's quality.

This case will only work with the Discipline.

Hey!
Do you plan on supporting other through-hole keyboards like the gingham or will it be limited to the discipline?

Edit: I saw in the replies that it will support only the discipline, my bad.

Small errors on this version but final prototype is being cut sometime this week and will be sent over to me.

Once I build it (should take less than a day since I already have switches and caps), I'll upload photos and pricing to go into GB.

Extremely interested! Easy buy if the GB starts.

Something else I'm interested in would be an acrylic plate so I could use plate-mounted switches on my discipline, as I can't find any that are compatible due to the pcb hole placements. It would only have to cover the keyspace, and also some longer m2 screws would be needed to mount it, but I think it could look really sharp. Unfortunately I don't have access to a laser cutter, though. What you have done so far looks great.  :thumb:

This design has a plate as a part of the case.

So small update:
Prototype should be shipped out to me before the end of the week (I heard that he was gonna ship it today). I'll be able to put it together sometime next week (I'll take nice photos and revamp the IC), then we can go into GB.

I will need to double check but there should be a plateless version available (essentially the plate layer will be replaced with a case layer.

Desoldering does suck, but if you go through it once you could get your hands on some hotswap sockets, install them, then you could have the plate and never go through desoldering again

Is only the high profile case going to GB?
Is the low profile case dream dead?  :'(
Title: Re: [IC] Acrylic Discipline 65% Case
Post by: HoodrowThrillson on Wed, 27 November 2019, 06:31:25
Small update.

I have the prototype in hand but I'm missing 2 capacitors (for whatever reason) so I can't complete it till it arrives.

Additionally, I am going on vacation from Dec 2 - Dec 18 so there will be no updates during that time.

I'm going to mock up the prototype (everything but the MCU, 2 missing capacitors, and switches will soldered in then I'll put the case together).

We tried to utilize the original mounting points for the case so it's not exactly low profile but sort of is. You'll see what I mean once I finish mocking it up.

For anyone that's already built the Discipline and don't want to take it apart, there will be a "semi" case. This will only include the bottom piece that fits between PCB and original bottom piece PLUS acrylic that will cover the exposed components (I will make sure to show what it will look like).

Pricing has been finalized:
Full case including plate: $50 (shipped in CONUS, add $10 for intl)
Partical case: $30 (shipped in CONUS, add $10 for intl)
Title: Re: [IC] Acrylic Discipline 65% Case

Quickly mocked it up (there are some changes in the steps when you put this together so I will include those notes when I go about moving this into GB, which will likely occur after I come back from my vacation).

Sorry for the poop quality photos, it's too early for sunlight and my new camera is still not here yet (and I sold off my old one). Better photos will be taken once I have camera in hand!

As you can see, we retained the original screw in points of the case. Some new hardware is required but will be provided with your order.

Pricing:
Full case: $50 shipped to CONUS (add $10 for intl shipping)
Partial case: $30 shipped to CONUS (add $10 for intl shipping)

Partial case can be bought for those that have already built their Discipline and don't want to desolder. It will replace the original acrylic top that covers the electronics. It features layers of acrylic that will enclose your exposed electronics with holes to fit a paperclip in to push the boot/reset buttons.

Additionally we are toying with the idea of offering different colors for the spacer layers (the piece that goes between the PCB and bottom piece, and the piece that goes right on top of the PCB would be colored, the rest would be clear).

If anyone has questions, please let me know.

is the component included in the 'partial' order integrated to the plate or are they separate?
I already have a plate for my discipline so I'm interested in the top acrylic piece, but if it isn't physically connected to the acrylic plate I would order the $50 option so I could possibly swap the plate in the future.

Do you plan on contacting Bryan from CFTKB to potentially do a bundled buy, with the discipline65 kit? I held off on purchasing the Discipline65 because there was no case for it, and I worry I won't be able to secure one by the time this case goes into production.

I have the same concern. I'd love this as a low-cost travel option, since I don't travel that often for work. More money for my at-home keebs, like the Nebula. ;)

The Discipline is going to replace my Tada68 as my work board and wanted some sort of case to give it some rigidity.

Yup, that's one of the fixes that will be done for the GB.

Good morning from the sunny East Coast of USA. I've updated the IC with pictures of the completed proto (yes, my left alt key is crooked because i didn't fully seat the switch. And yes, it's a little dusty. And yes, I took it outside since my apartment gets terrible inside lighting).

GB date for this is TBD, I've added a survey to figure out what color they would like for the layer between the PCB and plate as well as a notification form to be notified when GB is live.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask away!

"I talked to him and he said he's planning on running a few other keyboards he's design first before rerunning Discipline. He also mentioned that the mounting for the diodes and such will be slightly shifted so please note that this is for boards that have already ran (as of 12/5/2020)"

From the most recent post about this case on Reddit. So the layout for future Discipline 65% may be different enough that this case won't work. So this is really just a buy for those who already ordered a pcb from the first run.

Bummer - was excited for this but the news (elsewhere) that it won't be compatible with future Discipline GBs means I'm out. Best of luck with this GB, and hope to see more rounds in the future!
What’s not compatible?

So we will be offering PCBs (just the PCBs but a link to where you can purchase the diodes, etc.) also. Which means if you want a Discipline and want a case, it's possible to do so.

What's different is how the very top acrylic piece covering the diodes, MCU, etc are mounted. He said he's switching to 6 mounting points rather than the 4.

Ah. Ok. So this case doesn't use the original mounted cover? Or should fit the new one without issues?

When the PCB without hardware is offered will links be provided for a baseplate that's compatible with this case along with the other components?

Is it going to be the original pcb or the new one, or is the new one only going to be available in the future as a kit?

Sorry for all the questions, but they're important for anyone who didn't manage to get in on the first run of Discipline.

It will not use the original cover (the prototype has 2 extra holes around the USB-C area)

I will need to double check about the base plate (I presume it's the very bottom piece you're talking about?)

Original PCB that is compatible with this case.

And the questions are fine, I concur with your sediments (allows anyone interested to know the information they need)

Sorry about that, fixed it.

All great to hear! Thank you! And yeah, you were right about base plate. Sometimes getting a re-release of a pcb can be easier then getting the hardware that matches it. Not that I couldn't commission out to get one, but it's nice when it just fits the same footprint and the holes match up.

Updated IC with GB date.

We will be offering the PCB and bottom piece at an additional cost as well as a link to where you can find all the through hole components.

Wish I hadn't missed buying the board. I'd love a plaid case somewhere down the road.

With this GB, you'd be able to buy the board.

Ah. Awesome. I didn't know. I know it's sold out online, but I'm definitely in now if the PCB and components are available as part of the GB.

I have considered it but Worldspawn is very busy running his own GBs so we're trying to keep it simple this time around.

Will these cases come with new hardware? My discipline came with a couple wonky screws.

That is the plan. And to try to source gold colored hardware to match.

Sorry, won't open today. Been busy with my other GB. I'm planning on having it open up March 9th and having it open till the end of the month. I will have a GB thread made when final launch date is set and I gather all the details.

GB date got pushed back since Worldspawn needs a little bit more time to cut the acrylic case uploaded by Cosey. Once I receive the case and take nice photos, we can begin GB.
