Title: Realforce R2
Post by: phinix on Tue, 01 October 2019, 15:23:57
R2 has been on the market for some time now. I was wondering - are there any plans for making r2 ISO?

I don't think Topre really cares about the non-Asian market anymore.

I thought this might be buried already...

I know R2 has standard bottom row - but is space 6.25u?

Yep, it's a 6.25 meaning it's not compatible with older Realforce or HHKB keysets. (staring at mine right now)

It's kind of a shame since I'd definitely buy an ISO R2. If it were on sale, naturally.

I guess you guys could get a JP layout (which are conveniently cheaper) and use a script to make it function similarly, though it would be difficult.

Come on, man, this is America! We can't be expected to do things ourselves!
Only kidding, of course. What script would we even use though? That's my question.
I presume we're just going to have to make one ourselves or swipe one from a guy named Craig.

I cannot find a photo of R2 without caps.

Does anyone have a photo of R2 without caps?

EDIT: found it: https://typehype.net/threads/pfu-topre-limited-edition-realforce-r2-tkl-tenkeyless-keyboard-review-and-photos.337/

Few questions:

Few questions:
  • Any one saw R2 modded with Novatouch sliders and mx caps?
  • What is the difference between R2 satandard (R2TL-US5-IV) and silenced (R2TLS-US5-IV)? IS it just rings or sliders - standard gets black and silenced gets purple?

I'm not 100% sure but I believe the sliders for the silenced versions are a bit taller to accommodate the silencing rings.

Cool. But are they purple ones or black?

Where do you get purple sliders in topre boards?

I think the purple sliders are/were in the silenced variants & the black ones are/were in the unsilenced variants. I say are/were cause I'm just speaking from info I have picked up on the web, they could've changed that for the R2 boards. The only Topre board I own is an OG FC660C which was unsilenced stock & has black sliders.

The R2 silenced versions use purple sliders, and the non-silenced ones use black.

Cool, thanks.

Are purple ones kinda better or all the same?
I saw some people prefer purple ones.

The purple sliders are slightly longer so the silencing ring doesn't end up impacting travel....

You won't see any difference outside of that....If for some reason you don't want a silenced one, I don't think taking the rings off will be a good idea...

But I will say, if you ever decide to break your R2 and harvest the sliders (For some weird reason), the purple ones are probably a bit more sought after as they're harder to find...

They are better in the sense that they have full-length travel, whereas DIY silencing jobs will invariably shorten the travel by adding silencing rings (the purple ones are lengthened to compensate). So in that case yes, they are slightly better. They're also rarer and more expensive, as silenced Topre keyboards themselves are more expensive. However, if you don't need the silencing, then you should get the non-silenced versions and enjoy the additional thockiness and tactility!

I agree...Especially with the HHKB..there is something very nice about unsilenced...

I have both types of RFs and I don't have a preference...they're just different from each other.

I don't agree with you, I put "risers" on sandwiched boards so I still have full travel, but still with the hypersphere silencer rings installed.

Ok? Don't see why the first part was necessary. You can do work around hacks if you don't have the purple sliders, it's still worse than just having longer sliders in the first place.

Well, I apologize if you feel I was abrasive. Wasn't my idea, I actually found this imgur post (https://imgur.com/gallery/DLuOw) one day.

However, the sliders you mention that exist on some of topre boards are typically slightly longer to account for a pad that reduces noise as the "springs" up. But you can get the same thing with little red fiber washers, I bought these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ARADX88/ (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ARADX88/)

2mm ID, 4 mm OD, 0.5 mm thick round washers. It does ruin the silencing effect a little, but retains more sanity on that soft curvy tension when pressing the keys. Still quieter than all the "gaming" keyboards I wasted money on. (Logitech, Coolermaster, Steel series, Dell/Alienware, Cherry MX, etc...)

I first tried elmer glue to stick the washers on the stems, but it wasn't sticky enough, so I switched to tiny amounts of Loctite Ultra Gel Control Super Glue.

I ended up using Finish Line Extreme Fluoro 100% DuPont Teflon Grease to lube the switches, because it's sticky/thick, and reasonably cheap. Basically inert plastic. I wanted to try mechanicalkeyboards' krytox blends, but when I was modding keyboards, they where out of stock all the time. :/

What is R2's angle?
With feet up and down?

I don't have the tools to measure it accurately enough, but I can take a picture from the side if you want.

Lets do it old way, send me photo, I'll draw lines and calculate  :)
