Glad to see a nice alu board that doesn't cost an arm and a leg for a change! :-)

Can I use this without the footbar at a 0 degree angle?

Whats the angle on it ?

Here you go.

Awesome looking board at a great price, so nice to see! Any chance of adding split BS support? I really like everything about this board other than that big ass backspace. I don't get how a 2u backspace & 1.5u pipe key became the standard ANSI layout? Once I started to use split BS it felt much more natural & wastes less space as a bonus. Anyways glad to see you decided to keep the cost as low as possible on this as it really looks to represent an awesome value. Even if you can't work in split BS support I'll probably buy one just to build to support such a great project. Even on my boards that have a dedicated ANSI layout I'll just flip the pipe & BS key through QMK.
-
Very interesting. Anymore pics of the insides?
-
Would love for it to be wireless
-
The pcb seems to support many features like hot swap sockets and smd leds, but is any of that actually on the pcb?
Hot swapping is something highly sought after in my household. By me :)
-
Will you have an EU proxy (like for the CU80) if brexit happens?
-
This is very good. Colour options would be nice, but nothing wrong with grey. Given how popular 65% is though, it would make sense to have some options.
-
Will the PCB Hotswap or can you buy just the case and leave out the pcb?
-
Thanks for all of the support!
I will answer all of the questions here tomorrow, sorry for the delay!

A lot of people have been asking about split backspace support and it if we do add it, I will post an update here. Thank you for the support and kind words, I really appreciate it!

Unfortunately not at the moment, but I will post more images when we have the prototype.

Unfortunately this will probably never happen, sorry.

Yes, the PCB will have all of the components, including the hot-swap sockets , soldered onto the board.

Yes, we are looking into plans to counter any issues caused by Brexit.

The same rey that is being used for the CU80 will be used for the CU65. We are looking into adding black / silver.
Will the PCB Hotswap or can you buy just the case and leave out the pcb?

The PCB will come with all of the components pre-soldered. You can not buy the case or PCB separately.

Awesome! Definitely in.

Thanks for all the answers. I would very much like to exchange my money for your product. I rarely show emotion but here, have this ;D
-
I've been looking for this exact layout for a while. This is great.
Stupid question, but I'm going to ask it. Is there any chance in hell this has PS/2 support? I actually have some DOS machines that I'd love to be able to setup a smaller keyboard on. At the moment I'm stuck with full size.

Nice to see another budget option :>
I'd probs like the footbar to have more surface area touching my desk/mat tho.
Also, it seems like the front of the case may touch the desk as the rubber feet wear off.
-
Good price on this I think interesting indeed
-
The CU80 has a floating key / low profile design, did you consider it for the CU65 also? Or maybe a half floating design as the middle way?

The footbar is full length. We have tested the design on the CU80 and it is very supportive. The rubber feet are fairly tall and so it may be some time before they are worn out; with this said, everyone gets two rubber feet so you can replace your old one easily.

No, the CU65 has a high-profile case.
-
The case will have the same grey as the CU80 but we are considering having another colour.
Which colour(s) would interest you?

I‘m always looking for e-white and nice navy blue

Looks really nice. I will be looking out for this GB

I think E-White might not be possible at the moment because I fdon't think the factory we are working with has much experience with that but I will definitely look into it!

Regarding colors I would say that any one except for the standard grey would be extremley nice.
I have too many boards with that color already and I guess others feel the same. Especially the ones that bought the CU80.
Blue, red, black even. Any color option would get you more interest i think.
I'm gonna buy one either way, but I would be far more happy with a color option.
Hugs!

I am thinking about dropping the grey altogether and just having black. What do you think? The prototype hasn't been ordered yet; it will be ordered over the weekend/Monday.

I would suggest a quick poll over the weekend using a poll service. Who better to answer what they want than the community? :)
List the colors that are viable from production/cost perspective and see what floats up to the top.
Just a suggestion! :D

I apreciate the advice! The reason why I am thinking about switching to black is because in the future we want to have custom footbars using different colours and materials and so I think black would be the most appropriate. Black with a blue footbar would be more suitable than grey with a blue footbar.
-
Ok, I understand.
But for this product the footbar would be the same color as the main body right?
So if you go with black both body and footbar would be black?
Black is also a regular color though.
Deep purple would be sexy, wouldn't it? ^^

Yes for this round the case and footbar will be the same colour, I am just saying that in the future we might release some different colour foot bars that can be sold separatley etc. and they would look best with black.
-
Totally agree!

Really interested in this one. Is there likely to be a UK vendor? That'd be awesome :)

Here is a comparison of a grey case alongside a black case:
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Which do you prefer?
-
In the renders in the first post its hard to say what shade of grey it is. They seem to be rendered in different lighting.
Dark grey > Black > Light gray/silver
Would you say the original color is supposed to be a dark or light gray?

The grey is based on the same grey in the CU80 prototype photos. I guess you prefer black then?
-
I think black should be the color if you’re only going for one. It plays better with a lot more sets that grey or dark grey imo.
-
Update: Black CU65 prototype was ordered last night!

Nice to hear. Community feedback is love :thumb:

This sounds very interesting! Have you considered selling narrower footbars that would make the typing angle less than 8 degrees? I joined the CU80 GB, but I'm a bit worried that 8 degrees is too steep (I really like 5 degrees) and I'll have to replace the footbar with thick bumpons.

Yes definitely! Once we have established the keyboards I want to add custom footbars (colours, heights, material etc) so people can swap foot bars in and out.
Let's say for example you get a blue keycap set, hopefully there will be the option to purchase a blue footbar.
-
Following and looking forward to seeing the prototype.

For around how long will the gb run?

:thumb: for the different height footbars to support different typing angles. Especially if you already plan on offering different colours.

This board looks very simple and aesthetic, I love design.
And price :p
Two questions: where is location of type-c connection and which hot-swap sockets you used?
-
Interested in buying this if it comes in an ANSI version with split backspace, would use it with 0 degree typing angle (few options for that exist so if you split the backspace I'm really VERY interested :D)
The gray works well with the design I think. I think I'd choose that even if black were an alternative option, but black would also be good.
-
I would be interested in dark gray and e-white versions.
-
Very excited. This will be my first GB and my first DIY keyboard - and this is my first post here! Definitely buying.
-
Definitely on board for the black version, think that has best compatibility with keycaps and setups in general.
-
Is there an option for solderable pcb or are they all hotswap only?
-

1. Right side.
2. Kalih hot-swap sockets.

Happy to say that the board now features split backspace; the board supports ISO and ANSI layouts. You will receive two rubber feet meaning that you will be able to use the board with a 0degree angle.

The CU65 PCB will be hot-swap only in this GB.

Awesome, so happy about the split backspace :D! Will only a limited quantity be available or will I definitely be able to get one?
If there are color options I might even think about getting 2, but 1 for sure! With split backspace this is my dream 65%!
-
I kind of liked the grey, but would think a dark grey would also fit. The black with that current set looks a bit odd to me. Maybe pictures of the actual prototype will look better but wasn't a fan of the black render.
If everything is standard sizing then the colour isn't too bad if it goes well with other sets, but if it's an unusual sizing it means higher chance some people are going to stick with the stock set in which case you'd want them to go well together.
-

Yeah you can't really go wrong with blacks or greys for cases if you don't have a specific cap set you're trying to match it too.

Between the already awesome pricing, giving £5 off on top of that for those who sign up to mailing list really puts the icing on the cake. Thank you CU! Can't wait for this TBH as I've been wanting to get a hotswap board for testing new switches for quite awhile now, but never could find one that really met my needs. The 60% HS PCBS that offer tsangan support were close, but 65% is my favorite FF so this checks all the boxes for me now!

I gotta say your ideal of grabbing one for the kids as starter project & gaming board is a good one too. At $140 & being hotswapable so they find a switch they like it is kinda perfect for that. Also it's actually gonna be pretty high quality from all I can see, no GMMK or overpriced MD Ctrl/Alt.

Would you be less likely to purchase this if it didn't have Per Key SMD RGB LEDs?
Over the past few days I have become less confident that we will be able to add them despite aHollands best efforts. I am working with him to see if we can add them but at this moment I am considering removing them and lowering the price (new price has not been decided but the decrease will be about 5-10£).
This does not affect the CU80, that PCB will feature per key SMD RGB LEDs as mentioned during the GB.
Before I remove them from the CU65 completely I wanted to know whether this would be the deciding factor for those of you whom are interested in purchasing a kit. Please let me know!

Sounds fine to me, not particularly bothered, good to have it a bit cheaper as well. I do have a question though, will there be some more exotic switch options this time? Assuming the GB is similar to the CU80.

Which switches would you like to see? I am happy to add any switches as long as I can get supply from a reliable source at a good price. :)
-
I'd phrase it like this: If there was an option with the LEDs and one without, and the one with was 5-10£ more expensive, I'd probably buy the version with them. But for me it's definitely not a deciding factor and I will get this keyboard either way. I don't typically use LEDs anyway.
The option for 0 deg angle, the high profile design and the split backspace (edit: SUPPORT for this, the kb has both y'all) are the deciding factors for me, in case you care.
-
I'm certainly not fussed about LEDs pet switch. If your looking for suggestions for switches I'd love some Zilents

I agree with the Zilents! As well as maybe Zealios v2 and Gateron Inks. Gaterons are probably easier to get hold of to be fair.
-
Don't care for per switch leds. I would rather see a lower price.
Would like to see Tealios or Healios options for bundling with switches.
-
I'm ok with no SMD LED, but the split backspace killed it for me. =\

The option for 0 deg angle, the high profile design and the split backspace are the deciding factors for me, in case you care.
I'm certainly not fussed about LEDs pet switch. If your looking for suggestions for switches I'd love some Zilents

Thanks for the feedback!
Which switches would you like to see? I am happy to add any switches as long as I can get supply from a reliable source at a good price. :)
I agree with the Zilents! As well as maybe Zealios v2 and Gateron Inks. Gaterons are probably easier to get hold of to be fair.
Don't care for per switch leds. I would rather see a lower price.
Would like to see Tealios or Healios options for bundling with switches.
Thanks for the feedback - I will definitely look into adding more switches!
I'm ok with no SMD LED, but the split backspace killed it for me. =\

The CU65 now supports split backspace. :)

Like high-pro, very nice.
SMD LEDs? Doesn't matter, I never use backlight in my board, so better without it.
But ANSI and full backspace - absolutely necessary.
If it will be only split backspace with hot-swap and no full backspace option... I don't think I'll buy it.

Thank you in advance for completing it!

the form is... suboptimal lol. why exactly 3 options? yes I would not be interested in the keyboard if it was low profile, but saying it's one of the main features feels also weird. it being aluminum is also not really related to it being high profile. if this point said "case design" then I'd select it, because 0 angle supporting, simple, high profile is what I'm looking for.
split backspace is also just one of the things about the layout that I care about. I would not be interested if the keyboard had a stepped caps, or a function row, or only supported a 7u spacebar and not a 6.25u spacebar and I feel about split backspace the same way, if it's supported, it's just all around the right 65% layout for me. pls make the split version of the backspace keys the ones that have the correct alignment btw :P
anyway I'd select all options except for the LEDs :) and except for ISO >:{
why a question about pcb mount switches support btw, why would you not support them?

The form is mostly about the RGB LEDs and I wanted to see how sought after they actually were in comparison to the other features.
Feedback has been really clear and it seems that most of the people on GH and the CU65 newsletter are not too bothered about RGB.
-
I'm curious about the problem with the RGB backlight. Is that a software issue or hardware? I read that QMK support for RGB backlight is not great.
I filled up the form, I would buy without RGB backlight. I was interested in it though as I don't have any board with it right now. I was curious to try it.

I do not want split backspace. Do you mean there'll still be a hotswap PCB with 2u backspace? [Also addressed in a previous post by OP]

Just about every keyboard GB i'd joined recently that had SMD LED PCB had some degree of issues with the LEDs. Given the minimalistic, no-frills design philosphy of CU65, keeping it simple feels like the right path.

Very clean look, 2019 has turned out to be a very expensive year for me. I'll be jumping in on this GB as well! :D
-
Looks fantastic, will definitely get one!
Why so many cutouts, what layouts does the plate support? Is the connector cutout "standard", are there other places where you can find compatible PCBs?
-
What are the dimensions for the board? Standard 65% (40x17cm) or slightly bigger? Only ask, as will be getting a sleeve for this. :)

Please take my money ( ˃̵͈̑ω˂̵͈̑)ノ♡

I would also be interested in knowing this!

Which type of USB will the port be? C?

I'd like to see it with switches and caps, so we can get sense of what the gap between them and the case looks like.

Hi, on your website it says that the pcb is compatible with both ansi and iso, but previously you guys have stated that there are two seperate PCBs. Just wanted to have that cleared up, since having both in one would be a definite selling point of it, and should definitely be put here as a selling point.

For who would having both in one be a selling point? It's hot-swap and I'm not 100% certain but I think the hot swap sockets in the enter area would conflict, so that would be a reason why having both in one could be impossible.

I'm aware, but on their website it explicitly mentions that they will have one that is compatible with both: https://caps-unlocked.com/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-cu65-and-the-upcoming-group-buy/
"one pcb, two layouts." refering to iso and ansi.

me thinking it would be impossible is why I asked, and also why I think it would be awesome if they actually pulled it off.
-
I see what you mean now, this is weird. so it's hot-swap and then they say "The full variety of layouts can be seen below. All of these layouts will be on a single PCB.", but the layout diagram shows options where some switches are just 0.125u apart from each other. how's that possible?

Just took a quick look at 60% PCB I got sitting around & while I'm not sure of the dimensions of the Kailh hotswap sockets, it looks like there should be enough room to have one on both the ANSI & ISO switch spots without them interfering with each other, any other switches, or the stabilizers.

Would you be so kind to link me to the correct smd rgb leds? Would be much appreciated <3

So I got the email today that the GB is live. https://caps-unlocked.com/group-buy-cu65/ but I was wondering about the color. Is there only one option?

It looks like the only option is black (photos of the board are of the prototype in black), but what is actually offered is not stated in the GB page.
I am waiting on at least better photos of the internal chassis, bottom of the board and PCB before committing.
I would also like to know the plate thickness, where the board is manufactured and whether the two month lead time is realistic?
-
Cool, definitely going to order this as soon as I get two questions answered: What stabilizers are included with each option and what kind of hot-swap socket is used?
-
Am I correct in assuming it will ship from the UK/EU and not from some factory in China?
-

It requires screw-in GMK Stabs which you can add as an option on their site.
Kailh sockets are used for this.
-
For some reason I didn't get notifications for these replies! :(

Slightly smaller, full dimensions are here: https://caps-unlocked.com/group-buy-cu65/ (https://caps-unlocked.com/group-buy-cu65/)

There is only one PCB. This is possible because some sockets are opposing each other which will mean the some switches will face north and some will face south.
I think that this is good becuase people can try ANSI and ISO without needed two PCBs. Users can also try out stepped caps lock, split backspace and 7u spacebar to find out what they prefer.
Am I correct in assuming it will ship from the UK/EU and not from some factory in China?
Our manufacturers are based in China but all of the boards will be shipping from the UK.
Cool, definitely going to order this as soon as I get two questions answered: What stabilizers are included with each option and what kind of hot-swap socket is used?
Kailh Sockets and we are only offering GMK Screw-In Stabilisers.

The plate is 1.5mm thick.
The board is manufactured in China and I think that the 2 month lead time is possible.

:S almost 1/3 of the price is VAT+shipping for me. I cannot convince myself that this is then worth it for me. Nice board but the ratio of costs kills it for me.

You cant attribute VAT to the product??? It's inavoidable and has nothing to do with the actual thing you are buying.
The shipping cost is high, I really really really do agree. Maybe some other shipping options could be offered?
To lessen the impact of the shipping I'm sharing it with a friend who is also buying one.
Shipping cost was the same even if we added two keyboards to the basket.

Whilst we can't do anything about the VAT, we are working on reducing the shipping cost. Unfortunately due to bad experiences with Royal Mail for international parcels I decided to stop using them. I am looking at adding another low cost courier for non-UK customers, but at the moment all of the prices we are getting are similar to DHL.
We are also looking to work with a non-EU retailer for future group buys (if any are reading this, don't hesitate to get in touch!).

I opted for the DHL option and I live in the UK. I hate Hermes with a passion, consistently lost my parcels and the guy who delivers in my area has a habit of knocking and running from the door. Really frustrating! Obviously your mileage may vary. ;D

I do know that the VAT cannot be changed it was just a comment on how much these two factors add to the overall price in comparison of the board itself. I also understand the issue with previous Royal Mail problems.

Edit: I realised that was only posted on Sunday and my message came across a bit, short :P i meant it as a genuine question! :D
Edit 2: I just saw your reply on Reddit saying hoping to get them up by this weekend!

How would the possibly lower shipping rates effect the ones that already ordered?
And also, why is there still no GB thread for this?

Do we have any updates here on expected shipping date? GB deadline has long passed and MOQ well beyond met!

Hi there,
I am fairly new to custom mech keyboards but this is pretty much exactly what I am looking for (given it also works on Mac?).
However, I seem to have missed the GB. Is there any way to still get on board?
