Get an old retro game console, or a mini handheld . Will do for most games

I dunno. I bought a PC Engine in 2017. Was that too late? How will I ever play my games since it's so out of date?!? /s

My rule for modern consoles is to wait at least two years.
But then I did that for the 3DS and one month later the new 3DS was announced.
But still, if there are games you want to play now and know you'll get playtime out of, then it's never too late. I got mine last year and have put hundreds of hours into it spaced throughout a handful of games. Even if they had announced a new model earlier this year I still would've gotten my money's worth.

You getting the Super SD System 3?

Nah, still too expensive. Much less than buying the few more games I still want for the PCE though.
I will also add that the mid-end life of a console is the BEST time to buy it. The PS3 and 360 are amazing to collect for right now, not as good as a couple years ago when stores were clearing out PS3/360 games though and you could get new games for under $10.
I would also expect the next gen Nintendo console to support Switch games. Xcompat is a trend you will see in this upcoming hardware gen. Sony, from what my spiders tell me, will just be xcompat w/ PS4 but will focus on bringing older titles through digital means.
The next Xbox I would fully expect to be xcompat w/ all previous Xbox gens. In fact I think they even announced that somewhere.
So it stands to reason Nintendo will follow suit (unless they surprise everyone and go w/ a digital-only console, which is very unlikely)

I think it'll be a while before the Switch Pro (or whatever it'll be called) will be released, and they have just released the revised Switch with the improved battery life and such, so I think now is a good time to buy one. I wouldn't buy the lite due to its lack of HDMI output, but it's probably not an issue for those looking for an exclusively mobile single-player console.

Yes get a Switch. No it's not too late, or early, or whatever you're thinking. Just do it. >:D
