Title: mixing different mech. switches on one board
Post by: ihatelolcats on Thu, 10 June 2010, 20:19:33
has anyone tried this? for example, putting black switches on wasd (maybe q,e,r,f too depending on the game) but leaving the rest blue or brown. i bet it would feel weird to type on.

Like a Topre (http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,realforce&pid=rf_se02b0)- 35-55 g switches, depending on location?

Click on Nostromo N52 in my sig.

I wouldn't want to type on it though.

i did earlier today, i guess that's what got me started thinking about it

not exactly, because those are spread out evenly. this would just be movement keys for fps games mainly
i would like that for regular typing but over 200 dollars is way too much for my budget

So pick up a couple of Cherry POS boards with, say, browns and blacks and swap out the switch internals.  As long as it's not a plate-mounted board, it's pretty easy.

Many people leave the F keys and numpad original, swapping out the other switches only.

I thought of doing this with my rainbow board.  The idea was to have stiffer keys in the home row, and softer ones towards the outside like q z p . ?, ect would be linears.  I suppose I should try it.
