Title: Am Tp4 reading too much into this.
Post by: tp4tissue on Thu, 14 November 2019, 19:30:19
Dis' Guy I know.

His ethernet port broke on his ~high end~ Desktop.

Instead of buying a new intel nic, like all sane people would, he's just got this usb2ethernet dongle. Not even gigabit, it's an old usb 2.0 to 10/100, trash-tier realtek chip. He's been using it for over a year.

This is the same guy who spent a weeks to eek out an extra 50mhz.
___Not quite on Tp4's level of spending 3 weeks to squeeze out 10mhz.
___But still.. it's a character-reference point.

Tp4 is assuming the worst, that Buddy has given up on life, he's gonna killz himself, and/or on the verge.

Thoughts ??

I don't know the guy or his setup but I don't think I'd overwhelm a USB2 NIC with my internet connection and my files are stored locally so it would be good enough for me.  Why buy one though?  Maybe (also like me) his 'high end' desktop is ITX and he simply doesn't have a slot for a real card.  Or he rounded off his case screws and can't get in...

Now spending hours on something pointless like an extra 50mhz, that's worrying - surely he has something more meaningful to do?  It's still a step above completely given up though, at that point any spare time is best spent in the only (legal) true escape - dreamland.

Maybe he thinks it’s not worth it right now, because he’s already planning on building a new, even higher-end computer?

If you’re truly worried about him, try to get him out of his room and out of his rut. Some sunlight and physical activity can do wonders. It might not be a long-term solution (like therapy), but it could take the edge of his depression (or whatever it is).

This.
Most people are not even close to 100Mb speed for internet and very few people actually do file sharing at home, if they do, it's usually over a cloud sync, not direct.

Data hoarders are a small subset of a small subset of a small subset of computer users. That said, while I don't data hoard, it frustrates me that 10Gb and 40Gb ethernet is still too expensive and not standard on motherboards at this point. I find it very annoying that you can get internet delivered to your house at the same speed as your average home network.

That's okay...
All these companies who held it back are now kicking themselves because very shortly wireless will make them irrelevant (despite what the boxes claim, it does not currently do so).

Cancer concerns.

Of all the potentially dangerous aspects of the modern urban environment, radio waves are far down the list of things to worry about ....

Suburban, maybe not a big deal,  but if in an apartment complex, you could have 125 routers within Harms distance.

But OVERALL, this is one of those things, if you CAN avoid it. Prolly best.

Our track record.

Smoking , CANCER
Milk, Meat , CANCER
n00qulr power plants,  CANCER

Wifi,  ~Maybe yes, maybe no~

I'm more concerned with the security aspect.
Most apartment complexes (or at least better ones) have thick/concrete walls and floors which block most of it.

Bold of you to assume i can afford a high end graphics card.

Saving up for GK61 right now... will make it 😳
