Title: Picked up some old KB’s. Anyone have any info on them?
Post by: VipermanGT2 on Wed, 04 December 2019, 11:48:50
Picked these up the other day. They’re awesome in my opinion. Anyone know anything about them?

One is a Commodore and the other is a Dell.

Thinking about trying to restore them. Is it worth the effort?

Can you send images of the backs? Usually there will be a label of some sort that can reveal information.

The first is a keyboard for the Commodore Amiga 2000 (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Commodore_Amiga_2000). The Amiga was a computer platform that is largely defunct except for a thriving enthusiast community.
If there is a rivet on the plate between Del and Help then it would be a mechanical keyboard made by NMB which is more desirable. Otherwise it should have Mitsumi KPQ (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Mitsumi_KPQ_Type) rubber sleeve switches. (The latter is more probable... It is definitely not the Cherry version)
You could sell either to a Commodore collector for sure. There are lots of enthusiasts, especially in Europe.

The second looks like a rebranded Key Tronic keyboard with foam and foil (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Key_Tronic_foam_and_foil) switches. I've had that model in ISO layout. The foam tends to crumble over time, and otherwise it is often mushy.
Not worth restoring IMO. If the foam discs are still good then perhaps you could sell them to someone who is restoring a more interesting keyboard with the same switches.
Although... They are capacitive with NKRO.
