Title: ASK60 : Apple Standard Keyboard (M0116 & M0118) 3d printed case.
Post by: 4sStylZ on Thu, 05 December 2019, 03:59:20
Hi there,

I have printed a first version of a 3D printed 60% case for my two used ASK buyed this month. The idea is to make a 14,5u long 60% case.
Here is the first result. I have some tweak to do on the model for a final version but I am pretty happy with the result, even with a hideous PLA and even that I have printed it in two parts.

The model is supposed to work with both M0116 and M0118 keyboards plates and there is a version designed for small printers. For now, it’s not ready to use but I will make a first release soon.
I think I will remove the stripes on the model since my printer isn’t able to print both the supports and the level of details at this location. This is sad because I was hoping to have something very close to the ASK first design. I have also thinked to keep the original power button but I want something very easy to print and in one single part (comparing to the OEM plate wich is in two parts : Upper and bottom case). I search the best way to have some cool lights effects without losing the design general idea.

Probably not, I got 3 kb on 2 differents French Leboncoin.fr sales as pictured here : https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=33130.msg2834571#msg2834571

I don’t have a IIGS for inspiration, I have builded this case because of the AEK / ASK keycap profile.

Awesome build!  I can’t help but notice how much I am reminded of Corian (made by DuPont) when looking at the grey marbled keyboard and keypad. Corian is a acrylic and alumina hydrate composite material used for solid surfaces such as countertops. It can be easily routed, glued and thermoformed while being very durable and fairly resistant to scratches. It comes in a variety of colors and patterns.

I’ve thought about using Corian as a material for making keyboard shells] cases, but it is hard to source it. For some reason, DuPont likes to limit access to the material to its certified installers for soli surfaces. Samsung makes a similar material called Staron, but they are also guarded about it.

There’s a guy, Dave Hakkens, who designed the phone blocks concept. He started an organization called Precious Plastics, which is trying to build DIY materials for turning waste plastic into usable products. It would be interesting to see if a synergy can be created between the mechanical keyboard community and using recycled plastics for making DIY keyboards and other DIY electronic products.

I would love this over the pricey machined build being requisitioned for the ASK55. Love the preserved Apple logo inlay, too, like the ADK64

Looks great.
Take a look at variable later heights (Prusa Slicer and Cura) it will greatly reduce the stair stepping effect.

If you have no choice on your slicing program, you can still get a better finish by orienting the top cover so it's on it's back edge for printing, it sounds crazy and does use lot of support material and clean up after removal, and you may need some legs or something to keep it from tipping but the end result should be better.

Thank you very much for your input.

I will check the variable layer height cura setting. Actually I print with S3D but I don’t see many cool features on it like textured experimental finish or non planar printing. So I will make some tests with Cura.

S3d was great when it came out, it was revolutionary in terms of print times, and while I love the relative simplicity of it (and still a bit faster), it's features have been lagging for a while now. I use it to get stuff done quick, particularly when trying to find ways to tweak settings to reduce print times but I've been transitioning more and more over to Prusa Slicer.

Cura went from a nice clean setup to a U.I. disaster. I used to be a big fan (I loved older Cura) but as it caught on they shifted it from a universal slicer to prioritizing Ultimaker, everything else is an after thought. When they did a rework and didn't bother including deltas in the base program I lost all faith in them.

I love the look of the light gray speckled case, it looks perfect with the caps. May I ask what filament you used for that one?

Sory for the late reply. Yes that's Ice filaments gentle gray. Actually it's not a light gray, more medium. The gentle gray is my go to for all my prototype, it's a very consistant PLA for me and it's cheap.
There is some others cool gray that I want to test from paramount PLA but I can't buy them in europe (Cartdrige gray, basically a gameboy gray, and another one lighter).
