Title: [IC] Fallacy - An Aluminum Alice Layout Board (Group Buy Date Announced)
Post by: Esheu2 on Sun, 08 December 2019, 00:54:32
The Fallacy

People were calling Alice clones "Falice". Sounded a lot like "Phallus" to me. Friend told me that wasn't a good idea. Fallacy it is.

Group Buy Date: January 25th, 2020. 5PM PST.

Buy Details
To make the buy more manageable for me, there will be 50 units. Limit one per person. FCFS

Features

I chose to go with a relatively low typing angle at 6.5 degrees and front lip height of 16.5mm for my own comfort. I have found that my preferred range for typing angles is between 5 degrees and 7.5 degrees.
Any lower feels awkward. Any higher results in strain on my wrists. Similarly, a typing height of over 20mm results in my wrists losing contact with my desk, forcing me to keep my hands floating. I find this tiring so I made the typing height as low as possible.

Supported Layouts

Will have standard Alice supported layouts

Plate

The plate will be the standard 1.5mm thickness. It will be compatible with the standard Alice plate.
There will be a few choices for plate material:

PCB

Designed by Trifelife

The board is also able to accept standard Alice PCBs if you already have those on hand.

Weight

I enjoy patina so there will be no coating added. End users can apply a layer of wax or something if they would like to prevent patina from forming.

$420 for top + bottom + weight + PCB + POM/Alu plate (+$15 for brass)
$50 for additional PCB
$30 for additional POM or Aluminum plate
$45 for additional Brass plate

FAQ

Q: Polycarbonate?
A: No.

I think you might need to check your discord link again. Also, would you consider a USB C port instead of mini?

I guess it’s easier to just use the files without changing anything.

Check out the Majaphit or the EM7 in that case. People like the original look of the Alice, I see TKLs looking the same everyday but there's not an outcry about that.

SMH. Proper typing means your wrists should be floating. And for that reason, I'm out.

There should be outcry about TKLs being boring af. Same ol' boring Alice. I appreciate the idea with the flex cuts. Not sure how helpful it is on only two rows. Also like the idea of the weight expanding whole alpha cluster.

1. There should be. I’ve certainly brought it up.

2. There is a difference between similar TKLs and literally using the same files.

Don't love the font engraving. Also don't love not offering coating for the brass weight. You might like patina, which is fine. But many others don't. Having a clear coat option or something similar shouldn't be too hard to add for people who want it.

It is compatible with standard Alice PCB's as well.

Would love to see this in white

Unfortunately, it is not possible to anodize aluminum white. And, at least for now, I will not be looking into e-coating. So, no white for now. Sorry!

Would love to see people do at least something different with these Alice clones.

I guess it’s easier to just use the files without changing anything.

There are design differences from the Fallacy and the Alice. It sounds more like you want a completely different board/layout. And if that is the case, then I understand that this is not something that is for you.

I think you might need to check your discord link again. Also, would you consider a USB C port instead of mini?
+1

No USB C for this. I want to retain compatibility for what is now the "standard" for Alice PCBs. I might have added USB C compatibility if the Project Keyboard Alice PCB USB C variant had a top mounted port instead of a bottom mounted port. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

How many units will be avail?

I never claimed to have "proper" typing. If you have any feedback for the design rather than my typing, you can feel free to voice that instead. And no, "ree another alice" is not feedback. An Alice layout is fundamentally what this board is. If you do not like or want that, you do not have to give this IC anymore of your attention.

I agree there should be more differences with the TKL but there isn't quite a lot you can with with 84-87 keys with a classic top face without it looking like a monster overall exception of F13  ^-^ I don't design boards but I do appreciate a classic style

and to be fair, the top piece may be the same but the original Alice case doesn't have a wedge cutout, and if Yuktsi gave him the OK I don't see an issue with him wanting to run something like this for people who want it. We see it with key sets all the time that look stupid similar but doesn't seem to bother people.

Very neat Alice adaptation.

I think the weight corner radius looks a bit "fat" compared to the tight corner of the case.

EDIT: agree with above statements. The weight engraving doesn't do this board any favors.

No, the PCB you ordered has the USB port on the component side (bottom) of the PCB while this case supports the original Alice PCB with it on the top.

Hope to see the price for this go down, especially if we have to provide our own PCB. Here is what the original Alice went for: "$463 for case + plate + weight + PCB (Pre-soldered with controller parts, LED's resistors, and diodess)". Cheers!

What sort of mount would you prefer? Top mount is the best I've used. Most gasket boards are a joke, bottom mount isn't bad. Get a POM plate cut for it.

On the board itself: thank you for not making it polycarbonate. If I wanted a plastic board I'd buy a Realforce.

Features
  • Top Mount
  • Anodized 5052 Aluminum for the Top and Bottom Case
  • Sandblasted Brass Weight
  • 6.5 Degree Typing Angle
  • 16.5mm Front Typing Height
  • USB Mini port
  • PCB Compatible With QMK
  • PCB features flex cuts
  • Brass weight spans the entirety of the alpha cluster
  • Side cutouts for grip
  • Pricing: most likely mid/low $400's (tentative estimate CAN CHANGE)

I chose to go with a relatively low typing angle at 6.5 degrees and front lip height of 16.5mm for my own comfort. I have found that my preferred range for typing angles is between 5 degrees and 7.5 degrees.
Any lower feels awkward. Any higher results in strain on my wrists. Similarly, a typing height of over 20mm results in my wrists losing contact with my desk, forcing me to keep my hands floating. I find this tiring so I made the typing height as low as possible.

Supported Layouts

Will have standard Alice supported layouts
  • Split/normal backspace
  • Split/normal right shift
  • Stepped/normal capslock

Plate

The plate will be the standard 1.5mm thickness. It will be compatible with the standard Alice plate.
There will be a few choices for plate material:
  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • POM Plastic

PCB
  • QMK Compatible
  • USB Mini port
  • Flex Cuts

  • Alpha cluster has brass under it for acoustics

I’d say $400 range is already more than enough for a top mount board. Inflating the price just to create a luxury item only the rich can afford... ah well, my wallet will speak and do nothing I guess.

O I'm not saying that top mount is bad by any means :) What I meant was that a topmount usually requires less material and a easier to manufacture plate. For that reason top mounts are usually a bit cheaper to manufacture than fancy gasket mounts with all sorts of extra stuff that comes with it.

I'm behind this, but any chance on having a blank weight with no name?

I have to admit that I am very hesitant to remove the engraving despite people expressing their distaste for it. I personally (and obviously there's a lot of bias to it) really like it and believe that it will look better in real life compared to the renders. So, I want to wait to receive the prototypes and take better pictures of the actual weight.
If people still dislike how it looks, then I will likely relent and just have a blank weight.

I don't mind the engraving at all. However it's kinda bland imo

I'm okay with the engraving as a concept, but I definitely think the script should be re-worked to flow a little bit better (especially the F).

I have received the prototype units. Pictures have been added to the main post. Will hopefully have somebody else with a better camera than I do take pictures and a typing test for me soon-ish.

I don’t see why this will be unlimited. He’ll prolly keep it down to a manageable size so nothing goes out of hand

So, there are only 2 options for weight engraving: current design and blank?
Would prefer some engraving over blank. Any chance for an alternative design?

i think the weight just needs a better logo. having the word fallacy isnt the problem IMO, its just the font/logo.

From what I have gathered, it seems like the controversial part of the engraving is the letter "F".
The issue is that this is the only cursive script font I've found that I felt tastefully did the letter "F" (imo) while keeping everything easily machinable.

thats fair, i didnt think about keeping things machinable. i saw the suggestion of the backward F like fender, seems like a neat idea. personally, the logo isn't a deal breaker for me. looks good with or without  ;D

It's a race. There will be a google form that opens on the 25th of January at 5PM pst. It it will be fields such as name, paypal email, username, colorway, and extras. Since there is only 50 units being sold, you will be racing others for those spots. Assuming you get one, you will be invoiced later via the paypal account you put into the form

Thanks for the feedback.

I pre-ordered an Alice PCB (USB-C) and a plate (POM) recently from mykeyboard.eu (proxy). The Fallacy's PCB is using USB-mini. Could the cut for the port interfere with a USB-C port ?

The Fallacy will not accept a USB-C PCB. The POM plate should work fine.
