Title: Alternative case for the Massdrop CTRL
Post by: variality on Mon, 30 December 2019, 12:55:46
I was wondering if there are any possible alternative cases for the massdrop CTRL or cases that could be modified in order to fit the CTRL.

Yeah i mean if you heavily modify a aftermarket case maybe. But there is no case so far you can just plop it in and call it a day. Not really worth it.

For all that anyone knows, the Massdrop CTRL is a run of the Input.Club K-Type in another colour scheme. The whole design is free under the CERN Open Hardware license.
If you'd want to design a new case yourself, the CAD files are here (https://github.com/kiibohd/case/tree/master/K-Type).

The layout looks like it is standard but with 0.5u spacing between key groups. There might be some plates out there that would fit. Filco-compatible plates don't because those have one column with 0.25u spacing.
Then there are the two USB Type-C connectors that stick out.

No third party cases, but the PCB is the same in the high profile and low profile cases so there's that. And there are examples out there of people repainting (spray paint, re-anodizing, or powder coating) the cases to a different color.

Until MassDrop decides to drop the high profile CTRLs again, used is your best shot -- they come up once in a blue and at a premium. I haven't seen a case sold on it's own, but, as a really long shot, I have seen a few cases with faulty boards go up for sale on r/mm. If you manage to score one, the PCB swap with the low profile version would be seamless.
