Title: Cherry spring swap for ghetto reds
Post by: Infinite north on Wed, 16 June 2010, 02:59:13
I just took the time to disassemble three boards, one with clears, one blacks and one browns. the main purpose was to swap brown stems with blacks to make red switches. I am so happy with this alone, black springs are trash. the feel of ghetto reds are so much better than I would have guessed. if you have been considering this mod I swear by it.

While I was at it I assembled some of the brown springs and clear stems, this seems to work pretty well if you like the tension of browns and the obvious bump of clears.

I also noticed that the spacebar gray stem that came off the brown board looked identical to a clear switch in profile.

I like those combos too =)

The grey switch is the same as the clear switch in profile. But I think that the spring is stonger in the grey switch. But I am not sure now it's been a long time since I last checked it out.

Anywho, I am glad you like the combo =)

Like Buckling Springs from hell.

Now, brown springs with blue sliders would be interesting...

uhh... I think that would be the same thing. I am pretty sure that the brown springs are darn near identical (or exactly the same) to blue springs. The higher force of blues is just from the actual mechanism in the click I believe.

If I am wrong... let the firing squad begin... =P LoLz

OK... Now who has the gear to build such a beast, with black springs in a blue board?

That is possible and would make a lot of sense.

You could call it "The Bruiser Special".

I've put black springs into a blue cherry switch.  Yeah they are pretty hefty to type on:  Here is the link to my post about it previously,
http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=8779&highlight=cherry+green+grams&page=4

Included is the obligatory derailment of the thread about how I am a moron, I am doing it wrong, how I am totally ignorant, etc etc.  (thanks webwit)

I am notorious for mis-counting nickels however if you trust me you'd find a cherry blue switch with black springs to be 75-80 grams.  (well, it would actuate at 75-80 grams on the ripometer.  Does this mean it takes 75grams to actuate the switch? who knows).  It would be heavy.

If you want a crisp cherry switch requiring more force, but is more crisp and sexy than a cherry blue, you should try a cherry green (spacebar of the g80-3000).  I could love a board full of cherry greens for sure.

Looking back at that thread again I think webwit doesn't subscribe to the ripometer method.  He thinks it's totally inaccurate and gives erroneous results, and he feels he is actually doing it the correct way.  When I post about my ripometer results he begs to differ in his own manner.

Honestly speaking, I think I have taken some of his posts in the wrong light.  Anything said by him probably comes off a little harsher to me than intended.   In general webwit, I think you are a decent guy, and a lot of times spot on.  But then what happens is my anger gets going, then it turns into a pissing match and I can't back down from a nice pissing match.

I have webwit on the ignore list but it's pretty damn easy to just log out and see what he is posting, especially when I want to know what he is talking about.  Maybe he has some cool keyboard pics or whatever, or I want to see about how he won the M15 auction, or whatever.  So I don't really ignore him all the time.

The whole elbowglue webwit flame war thing is dumb, I don't think you guys want to hear it.  I have in the past offered to attempt to not offend webwit if he can attempt to not flame me, I'll try to stick with my plan if possible :)

ghetto reds are really nice. I use them basically all day, and i'm *this* close to preferring them over browns.

I have also tried black springs on blues. it's pretty wicked actually. I always kinda figured that blue stems + black springs = greens... but I'm probably wrong.

When I have some free time, I'm gonna do a full (or partial) black spring swap into one of my blue G80 boards. Can't wait :D

Anybody compare a blue slider+clear spring to a green switch?

I've done the black springs on brown stems swap, for something close to a clear (strong spring + tactile bump), and have the gear to do the reverse, but I don't see the appeal in a light actuation linear switch...  sounds good for a game controller (Ripster's now infamous n52), but it sounds like a mushy nightmare for typing.  Then again, I liked blacks a LOT more than I thought I would.
