Title: cherry g80-1800

i just registered in this forum and i don't have any experience with mechanical keyboards so far. I'm currently looking for a new keyboard and an important thing for me is that is should be durable, i think that's the reason i got into this mechanical keyboard thing.
I looked through different brands and listened to some typing sounds. I liked the filco keyboards very much, they look simple and sound very nice...
The only problem is that i can't get those, because they aren't available in germany i guess...

so currently i'm stuck on the Cherry G80-1800, i want to use the keyboard mainly for gaming, but also normal typing but not as much...

I found a describtion of that keyboard "G80-1800LPCDE-2"

I looked through the wiki, but i'm not sure which switch types this keyboard has. Actually I think mx black would fit pretty good for me. So which switch types does this keyboard have?

Also is this keyboard good enough in managing many different keystrokes simultaneously? Like this might be the case in gaming situtations...

Do you have any other suggestions of keyboards that would fit to my needs? Like i said, I game a lot, type just normally, don't need backlights or any useless fancy stuff, preference in durability...

Post by: sixty on Wed, 16 June 2010, 15:06:20: Like you have already guessed, the model you mentioned uses MX blacks. They are pretty decent for gaming and personally I also like them for typing. The newer G80-1800s all max out at 3 keys, and use the typical Cherry Matrix. If you search around you can prolly find rollover tests for it.

It should be good enough for most situations, but depending on what you play you might hit limits.

I think you will end up liking that Cherry keyboard with the MX Blacks mounted on PCB. As for durability, you should be good to go with that board from what I have come to understand, not the highest quality or rigid construction out there but it will work great! The cherry black switches are rather durable too so you are good to go there as well.

It is a Cherry G80-1800 layout with n-key rollover and Cherry MX black switches. Some reviews show a test model with Cherry MX browns. It appears that there are qwertz, UK qwerty and US qwerty layouts. My G80-1800 is only 2 key roll over.

It came out a few years ago, but is still available new (just). Eg. Ebay Germany (http://cgi.ebay.de/Raptor-K1-Tastatur-Schwarz-neu-dt-Ware-originalverpackt-/360188704825?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Handy_Zubeh%C3%B6r&hash=item53dceb7839). I have just ordered a US qwerty from Carbil Computers, Australia (http://www.carbil-computers.com.au/raptor-gaming.html). They have one left in stock.

Usually not. From what I have found out when collecting Cherry keyboards it seems like Cherry only used the multi-colored logo on G80s for the foreign market, especially Asia. All of the German/European G80s I have seen did not have a logo.

I am not entirely sure, but I think the logo has something to do with regional variants.

On the preview picture of the cymotion expert, there wasn't any logo but when I got mine there was a logo on it, that's why I am asking...

And should the keyboard be used with usb or ps2 port, are there any differences concerning performance of this keyboard?

Ys, the blacks are an aquired taste for some of us here. I'm having a hard time giving up mine; Once I go black, I cannot go back....
