Title: How Much Money Have You Spent/Wasted on Keyboards?
Post by: Kavik on Tue, 14 January 2020, 13:30:30
I've been keeping a spreadsheet of all my keyboard related purchases since I started in 2016 (keycaps, keyboards, switches, stabilizers, switch openers, etc.) minus any funds I've made back by selling things.

I finally updated it for last year's purchases, and I've spent in total $5,991.47.

This number depresses me because I don't have much to show for it, basically two or three keyboards I actually use and a bunch of switches and keycaps that I don't. I guess I need to sell off stuff, but I really hate the selling process.

I don't want to know, I've spent a few €K over last few years, but I have no problem buying and selling on mechmarket. It's fun to buy and sell.

I keep track, but that's not something I will share.  :))

But it doesn't depress me, I spend on certain things because I find utility / joy to them. Also, no use crying over spilled milk at this point.

In the same boat, same feeling, same "not much to show"

Already considered an exit plan for this hobby, but can't pull myself away from keycaps.

If I had to take the time to add it all up then it would get in the way of my buying more keyboards  ;D

I think I've spent around 500 bucks, but I have not gone with any custom keyboards or anything relatively expensive. I don't find it a problem, as I have given away (to my family) or traded most of my keyboards already. I see it as a problem if you are spending a lot of money, and hoarding without a use for them. No point in collecting and not using, IMO. But that's just my opinion. I want to hear more about this, as money becomes less important in the long run when it comes to getting good quality items in this hobby.

I haven't kept track but in the short time I've been interested I've spent more than I ever thought I would when I first started looking. I still won't pay inflated aftermarket prices for keycaps. Much of what I spent was getting different boards and tinkering to see what I liked since there's basically no way to try anything out without buying something. I have found the selling process to be painful and time consuming (not to mention losing $$) so I am less likely to just buy something to try unless I'm reasonably sure I'll like it.

I agree entirely, which is why I consider it so stupid that I have way more keysets than I do keyboards. I guess I just have a hard time visualizing combinations of keyboards and keycaps, or maybe it's just easier to like the look of a keyset with a theme than a keyboard with nothing on it. Or maybe it's easier to justify the cost of a keyset vs. a keyboard.

Same. I bought a lot of stuff to try it, some of which I'm sure has little resale value. Also a lot of stuff wasn't as great as the hype.

I've never felt bad about spending money on things that I get enjoyment from.

Plus I type for 10+ hours a day, I'm not going to feel bad about spending money for that to be a more pleasurable experience.

This hobby is very solitary in my case. I am not surrounded by friends and family who live on their computers. And while people close to me think whatever happens to be on my desk looks freakin cool, I would never dare to mention how much that freakin cool thing cost me all in. Trust me, they would not understand. That said, I consider myself fortunate that I can spend a bit on this stuff and not experience great pains, and it does give me a thrill every time I pull one of my boards out of the closet and throw it on my desk... I guess that is all that matters at the end of the day.

Keyboards were my third most expensive hobby this year, granted I did not come back to the hobby until around October. I originally planned to not spend too much on keyboards as I was very much satisfied with my current setup but I realized how much I missed out on while being away from the hobby so I opted to try out some new designs.

So far my entire entry in this hobby has cost around 1200$. And truthfully, I'm inundated with keyboards at the moment.

I keep good track of my spending, and ensure that no hobby eats into my future or livelihood, this money spent is all part of my "fun funds" so they get spent on either that, or hanging out with friends.

It will wax and wane, but never conquer my life, I did that when I was in my teens to a very bad degree (Magic the Gathering) and after working off debt with minimum wage jobs for so long, I vowed to never have that happen again.

Very true, although you always wonder, what would happen if I used these switches? I have a clicky FLS board coming in the mail (hopefully my correspondent has shipped it), and I have recently discovered a m0116 with great Salmon Alps that seem to be in great condition. It is always nice to give away boards to non-mech users though (my family). No matter who I give it to, everyone likes the feel of mechanical keyboards! :)

I just went through my history since the very beginning and my net (after buying and selling) is roughly $2500 CAD. I guess that's not too bad since it's over the span of almost 10 years.

Most of the things I've bought held value so I didn't lose too much when I sold.. except for my first HHKB because I've beaten it to hell as a daily for so many years. I'll be keeping it forever now. My NightFox which is probably my absolute worst and most regretful keyboard purchase because it's trash.

Still looking to add a third HHKB (Hybrid Type-S) but I've pretty much stopped spending nearly as much since I'm not interested in keycaps anymore.

Oh my goodness - are they ever.
I got tired of worrying about keycap shine which made it more difficult to enjoy GMK so I've stopped purchasing those. I don't mind shine on SA but there's no recent SA sets that interest me.
I've also gone mostly Topre so there aren't much keycaps to be had, anyway. Most of them are KBD which aren't too expensive, luckily. But, I do have about 3 sets of KBD Topre keycap sets, including the one that just dropped on Monday for my FC980C.

I guess I can't say I don't do keycaps anymore. I just don't do really expensive ones anymore.

This is where old/weird/obscure keyboards are nice. If you hoard old keyboards, especially if you find them below their market value, you can think of them as an investment. The market may go up and down, but nobody is making them anymore, so they should always be a net gain in the long game, like most other collectibles.

That's still mostly just an excuse to feel better about it all though.

I have no idea how much I have spent, I don't want to know, but I do know that I usually don't blow money on things that are overpriced, and that generally seems to include just about anything having to do with keycaps and custom build parts. I can appreciate some nice thick caps, for the sound that they impart on the whole, and can appreciate the quality of doubleshots, but neither of those seem all that necessary to me, and especially not PBT. I don't really care about my caps getting shiny.

I like shiny caps, as long as they are evenly shined. Having one side of the spacebar shined because I don't use my right thumb is REALLY annoying. Plus, I really wish doubleshot ABS, or just ABS itself could be more affordable. I like the smoother feel of ABS over PBT for sure, and I prefer the double shot legends to dye sublimed. You can really tell between good quality printing and bad quality, especially with dye subbing, so I want some doubleshot caps, because you can't really go wrong with those.

I mostly agree, other than that I don't care if one side of a space bar is shinier than the other either. I say that's just good worn-in character. I do also agree that doubleshot ABS caps should be more common. Not sure what the particular obsession with forever matte caps is all about.

I generally like me a nice used keyboard, the shine doesn't bother me so much, but then again, I'm using IBM keyboards primarily, and they have a hard time getting a shine on them, even heavily used.

My work keyboards though are pretty scary in places, you get IT keyboards that "work" but no-one wants to replace due to laziness, and they tend to get filthy.

My first board came with my first PC in '94. It was a Cherry, I think G81, but I'm not sure. It was quite a good board and I've had it till 2003, when a friend of mine borrowed my flat and, as a token of gratitude, took that old board she knew I have a strange connection to and put all the keycaps in the dishwasher. It looked brand new afterwards, but never felt the same. The space bar did not really work for me since that tragic day.
I think this one cost me a hundred bucks with the PC.
Next I went through a few OEM rubberdome boards that cost me nothing and I distinctly remember buying a Microsoft natural keyboard on ebay for 16 bucks including shipping. It's hard to admit, but the boards I used from 2006 to 2016 were a Logitech G15 (I got it broken and nursed it back to life) and later, a standard Dell OEM board somebody forgot at my place.
So 1994 until 2016 cost me about 120 bucks in Keyboards.

Then I bought a Das Keyboard Ultimate (the one with the black keycaps) and annoyed a lot of people with it. I got it used for 30 bucks.
Later, I swapped that one for a lettered one, but that one had MX red switches and I did not like them very much, so I sold it for 55 bucks.
(for those that like to keep track, that's minus 25 bucks) Looking for something mechanical to replace the Das, I ran across the Logitech Orion 610, which I bought on ebay for 63 Euros, but the model that arrived at my place had  broken switches in the Numpad Enter and , keys, as well as non working LEDs on two other keys. I filed for warranty and was sent a second board for free. So I went back to ebay and bought a dozen MX brown switches and white LEDs and, after admitting that even PCB soldering, even on this caveman-simplicity level is out of my league, I made a friend replace the faulty parts. I paid 6,33 for the switches, by the way. So up until now, my foray into the world of mechanical keyboards has set me back a hefty total of €44,33 and left me with two identical, working Logitech Orion G610 boards with MX brown switches.

Quick tip. I spent a few days cash blogging and recouped all the money I invested in my entire collection. If you're a creative writer you can make a lot of money doing affiliate work in your leisure time. I do all my work on an IBM 3278 and love it.

If you're wondering how it works the principle/business signs up at a third party tracking software service like this: https://www.affiliatly.com/

They set up an account so you can sign in and create tracking links, banners, etc. You write a product or service review with your affiliate disclosure at the top before any links or discount codes(FTC regulation). If someone uses your discount code the dashboard automatically updates the earned amount in real time. The principle/business then pays you about once a month via PayPal.

Probably around 1k, the biggest chunk of that was paying aftermarket prices for a set of SA Dasher keycaps.

The Das Keyboard, actually has an interesting history with me, as it sounds it does to you.

It was the first Mechanical keyboard I ever heard someone else talk about. I remember an old co-worker of mine telling me that you could get a student discount if you wrote a letter to them and requested it, and then they'd decide if they'd do that for you.

This was what got me thinking about getting a good mechanical keyboard again, I nearly went out and bought one twice, but passed when I heard of Ducky, and then I got my ducky yellow, which I used to pieces. Though sadly because it doesn't have Three Capital IBM letters on it, it now sits in my closet. It'll come out again eventually.

I hope.  :'(
