Title: Enough space between 4 MX keys for WS812B?
Post by: SCWes on Mon, 27 January 2020, 03:07:17
Here is a pic of what I am talking about: https://imgur.com/OlKKEIh (https://imgur.com/OlKKEIh)

I know the bottom portion where the key touches the PCB is a little smaller (12.5mm, I think) than the middle section, so based on that math it should fit... Can anyone verify?

19.05 spacing - 12.5 = 6.55mm
WS812Bs are 5mmx5mm

If it's not too late already:

I'm currently waiting for a whole keyboard with WS2812 mounted in pcb cutouts.
If needed, I can provide a picture of a test board I made for verification and I can push it to my public Git repo.

well anyway those diodes are not that thick (1.5mm), at worse you may have to lift your switches a tinny bit off the board and most rgb ready switches have provision to place LEDs under them (where a 3mm led would go) although i do not have one on hand right now to measure if there is the 5mm needed. and if you have any good reasons to put them in the middle like that and that your calculations are good i do not see a reason why it should not work. if you have access to a 3d printer you could try to make a fake 4 switches (or more) pcb and try to make sure.

Or maybe rotate the LED about 45 degrees?

I did a quick test. There's plenty of room.

The WS2812 - 5050 is almost centered between the switches.
