Title: Need an advice
Post by: Shiroha on Sun, 08 March 2020, 12:08:53
Hello. I am looking for a new keyboard. But since my budget is pretty low (95$) I can't decide what to choose. So here are my options:
1. Leopold FC700RT w/ varmilo keycaps set (default included) (Cherry MX Silent Red) for ~95$, but it's used and I don't know for how long.

2. Keycool 84 (Cherry MX Red) for ~80$

On the one hand Keycool 84 will be a new one, but i couldn't find many reviews about it, but some of them say that there are some troubles with the PCB.
On the other hand Leopold is a high-end brand and it comes with extra keycaps, but this model is quite old and if I am not mistaken it's not as good as FC750R's.
That's why I need an advice, what would you choose? Or maybe it would be better to save some money and get a new one (leo/ducky/varmilo).

Leopold is better. And they typically have long warranty. Check with the owner for that. Having said that, they are very durable unless the last owner dropped it from the third floor to the ground I dont think you would have any problem.

Ok, it’s chosen then. Thanks for your answers, since I got several reviews by keycool owners I was thing about if it’s a good deal for Leopold or not.

If you've already decided then that's it, durability isn't really a thing though. For the amount of time most people use their keyboards here (1-3 years), even a rubber dome most likely wouldn't break.

Only 1-3 years? Really? My poor poor K70s.

i think that rubber dome may be the longer lasting switches that have actual mechanical contact, being beaten by magnetic and optical keyboards, so yeah 3 years no problems, actually any keyboard should do that no problems.

Ah but you see, you don't suffer from chronic unable-to-settle-for-an-endgame-keyboarditis.  :p

I sort of do, I just don't need to type on my favorite keyboard at all times, partly because my favorites are huge and/or heavy and/or I don't want to lug them around everywhere I need them. I also think there are too many great clicky switches to bother focusing on an endgame keyboard at all. I have an F AT at one school I work at, I have a DC-2014 at another (I used a K70 with MX blues there for years, and most recently used a k65 with box navies), I use a K70 with MX reds with my gaming rig, since I haven't found anything so much better to bother replacing them, and I currently primarily use a TG3 cop keyboard with box jades for my HTPC. I have a few other desks at home just for working on computers as well that most recently had a K70 and Model M at them, but I could be swapping those out with a NEC and Zenith, since why not use all entirely different switches? I could even dedicate another entirely different mechanical keyboard to my pfSense box ... and there's an F77 in the mail.

Might be too late at this point but definitely jump on Leopold, they make the best prebuilts on the market.
