Title: 1982 TRON keys
Post by: ricercar on Fri, 25 June 2010, 00:32:09
This 1982 TRON movie advert had weird key caps. Anyone seen them in real life?

it bothers me when ripster can remember a rolling stone cover from 198?, dig it up, and reply to this thread in under 4 minutes.

I'm just glad I've been able to finally forgive Jeff Bridges for that atrocity of a movie.

You just got over forgiving him and he's making another one you know?

How can you call it an atrocity? It was like the ultimate geek kids movie. lol  Sides, Tron almost single-handedly started and certainly popularized cg. lol

Personally I'm looking forward to it cause I loved Tron. lol

The numpad looks like it is remove-able from that keyboard - YAY.  Although, otherwise, I don't care for it too much.  I hope they let you turn off all but the key lighting.
The mouse is worse.  I do actually like the Wii mote, but why not a PS3 controller?  Reminds me I'm kinda miffed about the whole black Wii thing.  I can waste money trading/paying up to a black, or buy an overpriced case replacement T_T.  Maybe I should just zagg print skin the thing and paint the base.

Those Tron keys don't look cupped enough.

Ever played Armagetron?  It's a free network game where you're on lightcycles tron style and try to cut each other off.  You can play against humans or machines and increase the AI level of the machine lightcycles.  I'm not much of a gamer, but a big fan of this one.  It's easy to setup on a LAN too.

You left out movies based on video games or plays =P.

I don't mind movies being based on non film entertainment that haven't been made into movies before.
That said with the leaps in technology it actually makes some sense to remake Tron, though I doubt they've done the important parts like improve on talent (in more than looks) or script.

Predators looks visually slick, though.  I think I could watch without sound and I definitely want to freeze frame it into wallpaper.  I won't be wasting my money on it any time soon, however.

Actually this trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9szn1QQfas) was enough to convince me the new Tron will be worth seeing. True, this Tron still has the laughably emasculated Jeff Bridges in it, and doesn't have that chick in the skinsuit who so impressed me in those adolescent years, and it will probably still nod a reference to stupid PacMan.

But the CGI looks phenomenal of course. The story appears to be a plausible way to both continue and forget the badness of the original Tron movie. Daft Punk is doing the soundtrack. Plus, it appears to have some unique eye-candy "keyboards" here and there. And it's inspired Tron-themed gaming keyboards and mice.

My guess is that crazy tronboard in the OP is probably just a bunch of random catchy glyphs, sorta like the not-quite-characters seen in the digital rain effect from the Matrix.  The spherical keycaps look very much like the sort commonly seen on Apple ][+ keyboards of the era, though the (probably) greyish colour suggests they may have been from some (even more commonly seen) Made-In-Taiwan clone.

Daft punk is doing the sound track, I listened to it somewhere. it's pretty boring and I like sound tracks, they should stick with disco.

I really like that the Tron keyboard has a removable 10key.  I refuse to spend $140+ on rubber domes that the keys are likely to disappear from in less than a year.  I still irrationally want it, though.  I like that it has a T of squares instead of the usual razer logo, too.

As for the movie, well the shallow reason is enough for me:

Man, all this hatin' on the original Tron.  I loved it as a kid, and I like it now... it had some very original effects and a really unique look, it was Disney being *creative* (which until they merged with Pixar, they had long forgotten how to do).  Watching the extras on the DVD years ago, I was only disappointed that the Tron and Yuri love scene never made it into the final cut.

Tron+Yuri love scene? With 1980's CGI?

That would sorta look like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcBYrJDAiGM), wouldn't it?

At around 1 minute and 54 seconds, the scene is short, yet contains some of the most complicated backlit animation in the entire movie (according to the filmmakers, over 40 separate elements were used to make the apartment "transform"). (http://tron.wikia.com/wiki/Deleted_Love_Scene)
