Title: If I like HHKB but I did not like Realforce 104UG, would I like a Realforce R2?
Post by: warini on Mon, 20 April 2020, 19:54:09
I love the feel of my HHKB, but I would really like the convenience of a full size board. I tried a 104UG but I found the feel very different to that of the HHKB. I'm afraid it's due to the plate material, but I'm wondering if anyone could weigh in on this? Would an R2 and/or Realforce RGB board be more similar to a 104UG than an HHKB?

***Update*** in case anyone has the same question in the future: I got a Realforce RGB and I love it!

I can’t think of many people at all who like the feel of the RGB since it’s made with flimsier materials in order to accommodate the lighting, but the feel of the R2 while improved in some ways over R1 (in my experience), is not much like HHKB, at least when comparing the silenced versions of both. The HHKB, being flexible and less solid than Realforce boards has a very different, lighter feel to it. However, you might enjoy an R2 silenced on its own; I personally sold my Type-S because the layout just was too inconvenient.

I would say 104UG would be a lot closer to R2 than HHKB.  So if you don't like 104UG chances are you won't like R2.

I own 104UW and R2, and I can say they're fairly close.  Realforce RGB feels different than either of them, it's in its own league lol.

But yeah unfortunately there's nothing that feels the same as HHKB.  The best course of action might be to buy a Realforce number pad.

The Leopold feels more HHKB like than the Realforces..so you can get a 980c which is 1800 format so you'll get your numberpad...

It isn't the same as a  HHKB in feel..but you'll get more thock than the RFs..

The RGB is a regular R2 case. I am not sure why people say that. only the keycaps stink. since it has cherry stems they are easily swappable for GMK. I personally feel that Reds are the closest you can get to TOPRE in a MX switch. I like the High profile in the old case best. I feel that the old case was a little sturdier. TUPRE's are not for the case but for the switches. If you want to spend a fortune have a case made. I have and i would say it is not worth it. just enjoy the switches because I feel they are they best they are period. that is my feeling, YMMV. Please do not flame me, these are just my opinions i am entitled to them.

warini! I am so glad! this is a first. everyone loves to bash it. I love it so much i spent the price of a small new car making it better! It is so close to perfect, it actually takes that much money to make it any better! to me it is the #1 best board in thee world! to the rest of you, YMMV of course but I cannot recommend it enough. I suggest you get better key caps. That is the only thing they skimped on. better caps make it instantly a $5,000 board. I would highly suggest any from signature plastics. only genuine ones. They run from about $120 to $200 and more if they were NOS and very rare. Better caps you will love the experience even more! I am so happy for you that you got the best one!
