Title: Greetings From Virginia
Post by: Gi1l on Sat, 09 May 2020, 06:27:25
Hello fellow wallet disappearing act aficionados. My name is Jayce and I am from Virginia. I'm a painter and a digital artist with a background in sculpting. I also have the fortunate disposition of being a audiophile, and a mechanical keyboard enthusiast :). I feel it is time to finally time to take a shot at making some key caps and see if anyone would enjoy my designs.  After lurking for many years I now feel the need to make an account so that I can learn more techniques and receive critical feedback. Currently there a couple of things in the work but the first design should be done by the end of May. ;)

Hi Jayce. Welcome to Geekhack.

It sounds, to me, that you'll fit in great here. Plenty of love for artisans here.

What sort of switches have you tried? Which do you like? What boards have you got?

You're not JaceTheSaltSculptor from http://reddit.com/r/modelm are you? What're the odds there'd be two dudes with similar names who are into sculpting and heavily into mechanical keyboards.

Thank you so much,

Currently I run browns on a magic force board with tai-hao avatar III keycap set. I know its not a custom board or even really enthusiast but I'm really enjoying browns playing Valorant. I have a Pok3r with greens that I like but rarely ever use due to the noise level and large tactile bump. Lastly I have a KBParadise V80 with the Matt3o Nerd DSA Keycap Set in Russian with box oranges, this keyboard is my go to for typing because I enjoy the noise and its not as fatiguing as the greens due to the lower initial force. I would like to try some kind of stealth tactile switch  like the mx clear or kailh white for my next board in the future but I am currently waiting on the c3 tangerines to become available again to do my first ground up build. Im probably going to try and build an 80 percent, hot swappable, and ergonomic so that I can get good functionality out of it while being able to display artisans without them getting in the way.

I don't think anybody here cares if you're using some weird old terminal board from the mid 80s, some Razer gaming board, some Chinese kit board, or the most custom of the customs. Box switches, in all categories, are pretty nice if you ask me. MX clear is not a silenced switch, so it will still make about the same amount of noise as any other MX or clone when bottoming out. I was surprised by how smooth and pleasant they were though, when I'm usually not a tactile fan (or MX fan). Does Kailh make a regular white switch? I'm only aware of their box whites, and that's a clicky switch. The tactile event is very subtle though. They do have silent box reds and browns, which came out recently. I haven't gotten my hands on the reds I ordered yet though.

I need to try to get my hands on samples of all of those fancy boutique linears and tactiles some time myself, just to be able to compare them. I imagine that's much like trying to catch all 150 Pokemon though.

Options will be limited for TKL boards, unfortunately.

Yeah I know how you feel. Seems like there so many appealing ones that it gets frustrating trying to figure out if you are missing out on any of them. I meant like silent tactile rather than full silent my bad. Have you tried glazed box green or the noble yellow box ?

When you say silent tactile, do you just mean tactile? There are 3 main categories of switch: Clickies, tactiles, and linears. Clickies and tactiles are both tactile in that there's some kind of tactile event at some point in their travel. The main difference is that tactiles try to achieve tactility without making any significant noise. Clickies are more worried about making the most satisfying tactile event possible, and the click generated is usually the result. Some like them for their tactility and sound (I'm in this group), some prefer their tactility vs tactile type switches but want something quieter, and some may actually prefer less crisp/pronounced tactility. Linears have no tactile event.

With that framed out, what silent/dampened switches do is try to take tactile or linear switches and attempt to mute the noise that they still make when bottoming out.

I do believe that my 130 switch tester has both of those switches, though I should double check when I'm home. Remembering that some people seemed to really love the noble yellows, I compared them pretty closely against jades, and I still prefer jades myself. They're basically the same switch with less tactility.
