I 've decided to take a poll on this subject. Do you use the left or right shift key more often?
-
Both.
-
Both - Depending on which character has to be written in capital.
-
I use both, but I use the left shift more because the right hand has more things to do.
-
I use the right shift key. I almost never use the left one, although it would probably make more sense for me to do so.
-
Left exclusively.
On both keyboards and typewriters.
-
Both.

Both.

On a Split keyboard, you'd use both, on a Standard qwerty board you'd only use the LEFT shift, Rightshift is too far away to be efficient.

I haven't even thought of it that way. My fingers are pretty long, so distance doesn't factor in too much beyond however tiny amount of difference in time there may be in reaching.

The longer your fingers, the further the right shift is away from that finger.

From what position, and at what point of the finger? There's no difference in distance for the tip of the finger when resting on the home keys. With longer fingers, I can just reach further without difficulty.
-
It does depend on the angle of attk.
In general it's far more efficient to appropriate either the ; key or / key for right shift if you must use it.
-
Both, probably right somewhat more often for capitalizing letters, but left much more often for Control-Shift or Control-Shift-Alt type combinations.
-
I use caps lock instead
-
Thank you all for your responses!
-
Both. And both Ctrl keys, too.
-
Both — as one is supposed to when touch-typing.
-
I literally never use the right shift
-
i don't use any right modifiers.

Mavis Beacon = Basic + Wrong.
They've been ruining proper typing since forever.
Wrong fingering, wrong theory, wrong emphasis of practice text.

To be fair, I never actually used Mavis, but I sold plenty of her. I learned to type, long before she came along, from a true typing teacher. I’m sure I’ve perverted much of my teaching with my own preferences, by now. I think I’m also below 100wpm at this point.
But I’ve wondered about the “which shift key“ question many times, and usually conclude that I use both.

I favor the left due to gaming habits.

Both.

I only use the right.

Since a reasonable follow-up question would be about keyboard layouts and styles of shift keys, I will say that I have analyzed my shift key use (in previous shift threads here), and recognized how my fingers tend to work. (Note that I use conventional ANSI almost exclusively.)
I tend to strike the outside edges of the shift keys. For that reason, a short/split Left Shift does not particularly bother me since shift is to the outside, but a short/split Right Shift with shift on the inside drives me crazy.

left exclusively because gaming habits but you should be using both depending on the letter for max efficiency, moreso the right shift if you're typing in english with QWERTY

600% LIE..

left exclusively, even on split keyboards. just grew up learning that way. when i was a kid my hands were too small to comfortably right shift and type fast so i would always use left. my pinky still can't comfortably reach right shift imo

Well on Split, it's actually quite convenient to use both. ONLY on qwerty, left is better.

I only use the right.
this has to be a lie
No it's real! Haha. I type with like 4 fingers doing a giver hand and my left hand has my pinky up by the tab key. My right hand always has it near the shift. I literally don't think I have ever used the left shift. Sincerely.

In normal typing, I don't use the left shift at all either. I can't imagine keeping my pinky up on tab though. I'm normally on the home row.
All I really use left shift for is hotkeys and gaming.
-
Also I dont use the right mainly due to it being mapped as Up Arrow on my main keeb.
-
depends, on iso i use both, on ansi i only use left because the enter key is too close in size and placement and i keep on pressing it instead. maybe it is because i learnt on iso keyboard and ansi is pretty new to me.
-
I'm actually going to record a video of my typing right now so you guys can see, but I need a reason to hit the shift key. NASA. Holy cow. Multiple sentences.
That's the text I just typed in this video.
-
the real strat is to split spacebar and use one of them as shift. thumb shift is superior by far. that being said, i use both left and right shift cuz i no longer have boards with split spacebars
-
Mostly left-shift since I am a gamer, but I am learning how to type using both of the left and right shift for when I type. Overall, just learning how to touch-type properly.
It's tough since it's been hard-programmed in my mind to just go for left shift, both in games and in typing.
