Title: Is this really $850 worth of "rare"?
Post by: Voixdelion on Sat, 03 July 2010, 03:49:28
http://cgi.ebay.com/Fujitsu-FKB4700-Series-Keyboard-Rare-Vintage-/290449692015?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item43a026956f

Doesn't look like anything spectacular.... Anyone care to enlighten me why this is priced so high (or if the reason is "the seller is also high")?

Well, i think it's Fujitsu peerless (Spring + Dome)

Which, from various reports here is not only peerless, but worthless.

I am often confused by the pricing on some of these ebay listings (and even from regular websites that offer IT services and supplies) where the price listed is obscenely high and the majority of the other listings are a fraction of the price.  I experienced this in Oct last year when attempting to locate an ASUS p4p800-E Deluxe Mobo in decent condition.  There were some listings for used boards at $299 even $599 refurbished (and not even a picture to go with the listing!)  I actually inquired of one merchant if that price was for a multiple item "lot" or else why was their price 10x that of the lower end of the price range, 5x the middle and 3x the uppermost besides theirs.  I never did get a response.

Are there people who will pay that much for a refurbished board?  and WHY?  I was getting a little desperate to find a board in the US for less than $100-150 at the time thinking that I was on the tail end of chasing old tech,  but $600!?  I maybe would have paid 299 for NIB or unused RMA replacements with all the retail trimmings (couldn't find one ANYWHERE to save my life though), but 599 for a refurb without so much as an I/O shield or manual?     Turns out I was actually AHEAD of the curve on that old tech thing since six months after I finally got one after 3 or 4 weeks scouring the earth for the damn thing all of sudden they are EVERYWHERE as people are starting to upgrade  - the bleeding things are popping up all over the place NIB, with CPUs and fans, 2gigs of ram, respectable video cards and blah blah blah.  So  I picked up a second one for $35 with a 3.2 GHZ Northie/fan in it... just in case.

But I digress;  How can these people dream up prices like that?  Are they maliciously preying upon the stupid or are they themselves delusional?

At that price, I would be expecting gold-plated beam springs...

Yes, $850 is a bit much. I'd be willing to part with my Peerless in perfect condition for $750.

A NIB FKB4700 went for $13 or so a couple weeks ago.

I would like the Fujitsu... if all of the keys felt consistent but they don't, they bind and feel crappy to me the further you get from home row.  They do have a very good click and soft landing but that's about it.

The only way a keyboard is worth any more than $50 is if it was signed by Jesus.  That's my opinion and I am sticking to it!

If you're cheap, you can go with a used rubber dome for $115 (http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-101-ENHANCED-Keyboard-P-N-5182-5521-/290296125572?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item4396ff5884).

Unlikely. Dinosaurs always trampeld down Jesus' keyboards before he got a chance to sign them.

All the more reason why they would be worth more money.

Police Captain: Well kid, you made an entire town panic,
you lost all your friends, and now you're going to
Juvenile Hall for a week! Huh, was it worth it?
Cartman: [dreamily] ... totally.

I would never spend more than $20 on a keyboard.

I heard the Model F ATs were signed by Moses (http://www.preater.com/modelm/):

Is it possible the valuation is based on Google finding one of webwit's posts where he jokingly suggested they were worth an exceptional amount of money?

I can't see anyone believing this is an accurate value without pulling it from another source first.

Blame the high price for that keyboard on the Japanese folks and their $10,000 watermelons.

If this virgin was Japanese she would be worth $20,000 just in melons.

Nah, any more than 15k and she really got hosed.  I think the going rate for those last I checked was somewhere between 7.5 and 12k - and this is a field where you're not just getting what you pay for. Definitely a matter of making sure you've seen the work firsthand before you hire based on a reference or rec cuz hiring someone to fix lousy cheap work is REALLY expensive.  But that was a decade ago at least.  I imagine  inflation affects inflation, too!

Ok are you one of those freaky-deaks with an asian fetish, or is your mom demanding you find a nice japanese girl because I assume you are japanese too?

The best are the guys who marry Asians who speak no english...  and the guy dosen't speak her language too.

No offense to you out there who have the yellow fever... my wife has the yellow fever too ;)
