Title: [IC] Elongate (Mini 1800) (GB DONE, ORDER PLACED)
Post by: fcoury on Thu, 21 May 2020, 14:08:19
Elongate

UPDATE 09/24: So the GB was a major success. We sold around 250 units so wanted to thank you all for playing. The order has been placed and as soon as I learn more or have any progress I'll post another update. Also, for everyone that asked on the past weeks: there will be extras!

UPDATE 07/06: GB Live at ProjectKeyboard (US_) iLumKB (Asia), DailyClack (OC) and MyKeyboard.eu (EU).

UPDATE 05/25: We continue to hear your feedback. Moving to ARM processor to allow us to also add in-switch LEDs. So it's happening.

UPDATE 05/23: This Tuesday (05/26) Gondo will be streaming the PCB port to USB-C - https://www.twitch.tv/gondolindrim_

UPDATE 05/22: Due to the HUGE demand and overwhelming feedback requesting USB-C we're definitely committing to that change! <3

Hello GeekHack! MisterKeebs here to share a project I have been working on for a few years now. In partnership with the gifted and awesome Gondolindrim (or Gondogod), along with 159 from ProjectKeyboard, I'd like to present the Elongate board, that combines the versatility of a 40% with the aesthetic inspired on a 1800 layout.

Please provide your feedback here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1xOQJRbzpbH5Ga5q6eFHe2yqL55rzjZbdXeLaXQBPJl8

Introduction

The Elongate is a custom mechanical keyboard that falls in a random place of the 40-50% range. It was designed as a new take on the mini 1800 layout, combining the versatility and portability of a 40% with the ability to have that dedicated numpad cluster, with Home, Page Down/Up, End, Insert and Delete keys.

The main and unique features of the Elongate are:

All of these characteristics really make for a very pleasant typing experience. The user is able to get the full utility of the 1800CP layout in a very compact form and have enough space in the sides to use the mouse.

What is included

The PCB

The PCB was designed by my good friend Gondolindrim and features RGB underglow for those sweet lights with the polycarbonate version. It's powered by the ATMEGA32U4 microcontroller and uses a USB mini-B connector. It also features ESD protection, connector shielding, power rails filtering and a sweet, sweet Brazilian flag. All that we learned to expect from Gondo.

We have had until now many requests to port the PCB to USBC connector, since as it stands right now it has a mini-USB connector. Please give us a feedback on the IC form!

The PCB is QMK and VIA compatible. Since Gondo is also a big open-source hardware advocate, the ElongatePCB is also open-source! -- see the GitHub repo (https://github.com/AcheronProject/Elongate) for the files.

Price and vendors

This GB will be run by ProjectKeyboard (https://store.projectkeyboard.com/) in US (big kudos to the awesome 159 for all the support along the way) and, depending on the interest, we will be considering EU/Asia proxies.

DISCLAIMER the prices below are tentative based and can change before GB opens. We'll try to be super transparent if they change.

The kit/pricing breakdown will be as follows (all prices excludes shipping and other PP/trasaction fees):

Base Kit:

Anodized Alu Top and Bottom, Brass Plate, Brass Midlayer and PCB - $325-350

Extras:

We also do not know if we are going to do a limited or unlimited run; all depends on the results of this IC, so please please give us your feedback on the IC form!

Hey... I watched the stream when you received the dirst prototype. This board has come a long way and coming from you, we can be sure, it is well thought through.
Could you give us non 40% users some sample layer configs so we can get an idea how to use the board?
It looks and sounds insane, that's for sure!

As a programmer this is what stops me from using 40% - I can handle a lot of functions being hidden behind a layer but not " ' { } ; :

Regardless this keyboard looks amazing!  Nice work.

Is it still possible to not have indicator LEDs on both spacebar blocker and above arrow cluster? Seems a tad unnecessary. Granted one could just not install LEDs in either places, but the “holes” will still be present.

Not sure if anything can be done about that at this stage though.

Yes, I was talking to 159 yesterday and there's really no reason to not push this soon. So even though no concrete TLs yet, we expect it to be happening pretty soon. For real this time :)

Yeah was also wondering about that gap and the 3 leds between the spacebars. Was the thinking that when you look down at the keeb, you'll see those leds between your hands?

If those leds are there, can it be turned off or disabled? I've seen instances of electronic equipment where the leds are too bright and can be quite a distraction. Not sure whether will it be in this case.

So the midlayer will be brass for alu cases? I'm not seeing an option for any of the vendors.
Also wasn't the default plate supposed to be brass?

You will probably have to join a group buy for keycaps that you like, that is running right now or soon. Another option is to try to buy second hand, although that can be significantly more expensive depending on the set.

This keyboard uses a few non standard sized keys, mainly the 2.25 and 2.75 spacebar keys and the 1.75 ANSI enter. Most keycap sets today are offered with a base option which covers the most standard keyboard sizes and with optional sets you can purchase, for example a spacebars kits will often have these spacebars that you need, or there will be a 40s set for small factor keyboards. Make sure that the 1.75 unit ANSI enter is provided, or a similar key (maybe novelty) is being offered, because sometimes even these optional kits won't offer it (and sometimes it's offered in the base kit, you will really have to check the specific keycap set that interests you).

I've been watching IC for a long time and thought its base plate was brass. However, today we checked the vendor to participate in GB and found that it is provided with an aluminum plate and cannot be replaced with brass.Should it be purchased additionally? I am unhappy that I have to buy two plates to choose brass. (It's the IC's maximum of $350, so why did the base plate become aluminum?) And if it's an aluminum plate, does it come in color to match the case? I'd appreciate it if you could give me more accurate data. I tried to participate in it, but it is now pending.

Yeah the GB is live on vendors but no real update here from the OP that it’s live and that the default plate is now aluminium etc - it doesn’t fill me with a lot of confidence.

I trust my local vendor so I assume they’ve got some faith and a bit more communication (maybe that’s some false hope?), but it’d be nice to see it here as well.

I was also a bit annoyed that the default plate was not brass or even that I could choose.  I ordered an additional plate as well but it felt unnecessary.

Yeah I asked about the default plate about a week ago and there hasn't been a response from OP. There's no GB thread or subchannel in the 40s discord either. The lack of communication during the GB stage is a little off putting.

Not sure why, but mine is still showing up Alu for Project Keyboard

Plate: Aluminum 6063
Mounting Style: Top mount.

Love the eccentricity of this board.  I'm in a bit of a battle with myself over the loss of the last 2 alpha columns (;'{}./).  Normally that's a deal breaker, but I like this design enough I might go for it anyway.

Any plans for Eloooongate R2 with another column or two?

All the vendor I checked are marking it as basic inclusion of aluminum plates. If that's not true, you'd better fix it quickly. (There must be someone who has placed unnecessary additional orders to get hold of brass plates.) After seeing your answer, I checked some vendors again, but they have not been modified. It is marked with aluminum. For example, Project Keyboard, Daily Clark, etc. As far as I've checked, all vendors.

Same here. Ordered from Daily Clack, was going to buy a separate brass plate but held off for a bit.

DC are still showing Aluminium on the product page as the plate material - Will the default actually be brass and vendors might just take some time to update their listing?

Might be best to clarify for anyone ordering different plates and even those who have placed orders. If someone actually did want an Alu plate and it is changed to brass by default they might be upset at the change. I'd welcome the change for my order - I'd much prefer my polycarb with a brass plate like in your build stream video.

Seriously considering picking up a Blue with an extra CF plate in the next week or so if the default is the Brass.

I've had similar struggle pairing the blue and was also thinking about going PC originally.  PC is definitely easier to find caps for, but that blue is so nice.

I've been thinking about Hammerhead, it should look good.  MrKeebs has a typing test with the blue using Solarized Dark on youtube.  To my eye Solarized Dark looks similar to Norde and looks really nice.

Other thoughts:
- maybe upcoming KAT Monochrome (full WoB or BoW)
- SA Mizu / KAT Mizu (if that ever happens), I'm not personally an SA fan, but the color scheme should work.
- Modo2 with the blue accents might be ok?

I could see a bunch of stuff potentially working with the blue, but I'm definitely not as confident as with the PC.  It'll be fun to experiment with.

Beautiful board, but I'll definitely have some trouble choosing between PC and plum. I'm on the edge of jumping in this GB, but I'm somewhat hesitant just looking at the previous replies referencing how the default plate isn't brass on the vendor pages, but Alu instead. Unless there's some clarification/update here or the vendors pages get fixed, I may have to hold off (and I'm sure I'm not the only one). I'd rather not get into a whole mix-up and then have to reach out just to have something fixed that has already been brought up by a bunch of people. Also, no GB page approved by the mods yet?

Sharing pretty much the same concern as the the comments before me: ProjectKeyboard (and the other proxies) still state in their description that the default plate is Aluminum. I’m going to reach out to them and confirm if the default plate is actually Brass or not. I’m really hoping that all they have to do is update their description.

I may be a minority but even though I’ll still be purchasing an Elongate, I do want to mention that if there ever is an Elongate R2 in the future, I’d love to see a southpaw numpad and arrow keys configuration. In terms of efficiency, it makes a little bit more sense since it reduces the amount of time that one’s right hand is on and off the mouse, compared to the traditional orthodox numpad + arrow keys configuration. The Clarabelle Keyboard that recently ended its GB comes to mind. If this ever comes to fruition, I’d love to own an R2.

It's been a long time eh? So I figured I'd post an update:

So the GB was a major success. We sold around 250 units so wanted to thank you all for playing!

The order has been placed and as soon as I learn more or have any progress I'll post another update. Also, for everyone that asked on the past weeks: there will be extras!
