Went down the rabbit hole on mechanical keyboards after a coworker brought one to work. Have bought a couple and now ordered my first parts to build me own. Happy to find some people to share this crazy hobby with.

Hi Tinman39. Welcome to Geekhack.
I can't count how many people I have seen refer to it as a rabbit hole now. It makes perfect sense to put it that way. I hear about people getting hooked after experiencing another passionate enthusiast's board as well. It makes me think that we should be keyboard missionaries or something, or go around door-to-door like Jehovah's Witness with keyboards. "Excuse me, sir. Could you spare a moment to hear the divine song from the board of Alps?"
What did you order? What switches have you tried? Which do you like?

Hello fellow Michigander!
I don’t know of any Michigan focused discord groups but If you’re interested, the Ohio community discord is excellent and always very welcoming https://discord.gg/hQQ9Gt
There is also this Midwest group that is fairly inactive but may be helpful for future meetups etc: https://discord.gg/jgpTxv
Welcome again and hope to see you at a meetup one of these days!

So far I have gotten a Durgod Taurus K320 TKL with Cherry MX Browns and I ordered a GMMK Compact with Gateron Browns, a KBD67mkii kit and impulse ordered one of the Frozen Llama Ducky One 2 Mecha Minis because I loved the color. So far, I am a fan of the tactile switches I have tried. I haven't been able to decided between Cherry and Gateron Browns, but I have a set of both for the GMMK. I also ordered a set of Gateron Red switches to try because I have some red switches in a tested and am intrigued by them. I am sure that I will go down the hole of crazy switches. I am already eyeing a set of purple Zealios switches.

I have yet to hear anything bad about Durgod. It seems like they make pretty good boards for the price. Your thoughts on MX brown and Gateron brown are interesting. That Ducky sure is one sharp board. I can't stand MX browns myself, but find Gaterons relatively pleasant for MX-based tactiles. A lot of people seem to love Zealios, so I imagine you can't go wrong there.
As far as Gateron reds go, are you eyeing those up for a gaming keyboard? I find MX reds to be too light, and Gaterons should be pretty close. I accidentally actuate MX reds by resting my fingers on them. Gateron yellows seem to be a nice balance between reds and blacks in this regard. You could always swap the springs in the reds though, if you come to the same conclusion. Gateron makes some great switches, for MX clones.

I really am liking my Durgod. Enough that I am pretty sure I am going to order one of their full size boards for when I go back to work. These past couple months at home on this board have made me a huge fan of mech boards and i am not sure I can go back to a 'normal' board at work. That being said, a dark part of me wants to get something with some clicky switches on it to piss off my coworkers and keep them away from my desk
I am getting the reds to try them out because on the switch tester I have, I keep playing with the reds and the browns and finding them both fine. I have a pretty light touch, so I am not too worried about it. They were on sale, and I got a spare set of browns, so if i dont like them, its not the biggest deal.

Yes, join us on the dark side. Get some really loud clickies like buckling spring, or Kailh box clickies. I find people tend to like the sound of good clickies anyway. It is MX blues that people usually don't like, or other high-pitched switches to a lesser degree.
What switches have you got in the tester?

Its a nine switch tester and I currently have MX Brown, Gateron Brown, Kailh Brown, MX Red, Gateron Red, Kaihl Box Red, MX Blue, Kaihl Silver and Kaihl Purple. I have a whole bunch of others that I will also try when my GMMK gets here. I got the Glorious pack of switches and an MX pack, so I have quite a few others (12 I think)

Nice. How are you liking the Gateron reds and box reds, in particular? I find them to be relatively smooth/nice linears.
Hmmm, looks like the GMMK pack has box whites and gateron blues in it at least. Those are some of the better modern clickies. It is unfortunate that it doesn't have any thick clicks. I think even box whites are much nicer than any MX derivative clickies though.
I'm probably going to sound like a shill, since I link this tester all of the time, but this one's got a lot of bang for your buck: 130 switch switches tester with acrylic base blank keycaps for mechanical keyboard (https://kprepublic.com/products/130-switch-switches-tester-with-acrylic-base-blank-keycaps-for-mechanical-keyboard-cherry-kailh-gateron-outemu-ice-ttc-ormon-ysa)
Unfortunately, if you like linears and tactiles, most of the ones that seem to be the most popular with people that dig deep into this hobby are not really in any general testers. Zeal has their own tester, I don't know that any have more recent switches that people tend to like, like NK creams and blueberries. I haven't seen any with Gateron ink switches either, etc.

So far I am liking the Gateron and Box Reds. I ordered a set of Gateron Reds to try in the GMMk when it gets here. I really want to try some of the more boutique tactile switches, but I should slow down on my buying.

I know how that goes. Good luck on your quest.
