Title: [IC] CNC-milled switch lubing station - (June1-June7)
Post by: AIRPOTTER on Fri, 29 May 2020, 01:06:22

[Update] GB is live for 7 days: https://graystudio.club/products/grays-switch-lubing-station?variant=32447414927460

It will include a switch lubing station, 2 brushes, and custom-made packaging. Thank you! GB will run for a week, and the production should take less than a month.

--------------------------------

Hello friends, May from the Gray Studio has designed and prototyped a premium acrylic switch lubing station. The lubing station has been optimized a few iterations and prototyped to work very nicely with various switches.

We will consider holding a GB on Graystudio.club soon if there is enough interest. Thank you very much for your attention. The cost will be a bit higher than 3D-printed ones but affordable.

I will still be focusing on keyboards. And for these peripheral items' GB, they will not take that long to produce and fulfill as keyboards, and therefore I have assigned May to take care of them. And for such small items, I will not be posting a separate GB post on Geekhack, but will announce it here in the IC page and my Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/graystudio01/) page for GBs or sales. Thank you all.

Appears most 3D-printed ones are $25 to $30+shipping. This one is CNC milled; it is high quality and has multiple parts. And we also made special packaging for it to make sure it is safe during transportation. Cost is high, so GB price will be a little bit more expensive than 3D printed ones, but won't exceed $35 (with all fees included, excludes shipping). I will try to keep shipping cost low as well with EMS.

Thanks! We haven't designed a switch opener yet - maybe something to consider but there are quite a few good ones out there already.

But we will include a couple of brushes for ya.

+1. Would really like to see it made for 70 switches. Getting in a groove and then needing to come back for 10 switches is a bit inconvenient.

Also interested, particularly at support for  70-75 (split backspace and spacebar guy here)
Also, is 10mm sufficient to keep the pins from poking through? Don't have calipers on hand to check

There are a couple of questions about whether 10mm provides enough clearance for the pins. Yes, just sharing a pic showing that below.

Also, the "60 Switches" Printing will be changed to "Switch Lubing Station"

It could be both. CNC doesn’t necessarily mean milled. Laser cutters are also CNC, just like water jet cutters, CNC lathes, and a bunch of other stuff.

The only problem with including a lube vial holder is that different vendors package lube differently. Do you really want to re-package your lube into an included vial that fits into a holder on the lubing station? What if the station includes 1-2 vials, but you get a third type of lube? It seems simpler to just leave the lube elsewhere on the table and simplify the lube station to just hold the switches.

Dang you guys really meant it when you said “GB soon.” I’m super hyped. Any idea what fulfillment time will look like? I was planning on asking a friend to print me a smaller lubing station to kill some of my quarantine time by lubing. This would be a much better option though.

The point is to keep everything together and relatively secure. It doesn't have to be a perfect fit but just big enough to keep some small containers in place.

I would personally transfer lube to a new container if it was some type of easily acquirable vial though.

I suggested it as an attachment instead of including it in the base product because I didn't think it would have universal appeal. If it's an additional option, you don't have to buy it if you don't want it. Since the GB is about to happen apparently, maybe this could be an option for a future R2.

Hi Potter!

Will there be a bigger version of this (70+ keys) after the 1st GB?  Possibly other colorways?

Potter’s vpn is down; and I’m just passing info that he said the GB will likely be dropped as soon as tomorrow and be live for a week or so in his Shopify store: graystudio.club

Dang you guys really meant it when you said “GB soon.” I’m super hyped. Any idea what fulfillment time will look like? I was planning on asking a friend to print me a smaller lubing station to kill some of my quarantine time by lubing. This would be a much better option though.

Potter said production will take less than 30 days (maybe even faster), shipping may take 14 business days

Thanks! Ordered!

Picked one up and couldn’t resist grabbing a black SU bag. Hoping while not hoping they drop a bigger lubing station because my wallet cries.

Interest, but curious why this lays flat. Back legs for ergonomics? How are people handling this?

Does this design allow you to clip the top housing on (assemble the switch) while the bottom housing is in the lubing station?

Not quite sure what "lays flat" here means...?

I think they were suggesting it be angled rather than level, which I have to disagree with. It would make reassembling switches harder imo. I personally place the spring in the bottom housing, precariously place the slider on the spring, and then sort of lower the top housing into place when I reassemble. I definitely wouldn’t want to do that at like a 7° angle.

I see ... yeah I feel level might actually work better like qlavier's also is (which looks amazing by the way)

Yup, I ordered as well, first order from Gray Studio. Keeping an eye on the Think6.5, hoping the timing’s right for my wallet.

Lubing is the most time-consuming part ... part I really hate, but at the same time enjoy, because it adds so much to the typing experience.

Quick poll: do you all lube clickies? I’ve only made one board with clicky switches. Stock box whites. It seems fine. Thoughts?

I almost missed it too! Thankfully I decided to look at r/mechgroupbuys today & jumped in for one also when I saw the post for this. I love my little Qlavier lube deck, but these are on another level & I've been wanting a lube deck with more than 32 spot for awhile.

Mine has been stuck about 15 minutes away from me for almost a week.

It's marked as "TENDERED FOR DELIVERY". Is this normal?

Yeah, and you should see it move soon.
If you do look up your tracking on the actual 4Px site, you may see another longer number listed. This will be the usps handoff tracking number, and you can look that tracking number up specifically to see more info in the usps system.  However, once it starts moving the 4Px number should update again.

Mine only just got out of the Tendered status the other day, after a week or so too.  I should have mine anytime between today and Thursday.

I received mine yesterday after being stuck in “tendered for delivery” for a while. I did not know about the UPS handoff number, the original tracking number did not provide a lot of info.

Got an additional base plate in the mail the other day - anyone know what it solves? Not been on the forums much so - looks like the opening is a lightly different opening so does this replace the top or bottom plate?
Title: Re: [IC] CNC-milled switch lubing station - (June1-June7)
Post by: grimmaniac on Fri, 02 April 2021, 16:12:35
It's a replacement for the middle plate (top plate, if you don't count the stem holder). The cutouts in the original plate were too small and made it hard/impossible to close the switches while the bottom housing was still in the station.
