Title: Please help me fix my Keyboard
Post by: Kynell on Sat, 10 July 2010, 18:40:31
Hey Guys, i got a big Problem.
I wanted to clean my G80-3000 LPC, so i took off the buttons - no problem.
But after i removed the Spacebar and cleaned it, it felt kinda strange so i tooked it off again. But i removed the Keytop (think its called like that) by accident and i damaged that little metal plate shown in this picture:

I tried to fix it (bend it etc) but it broke :(
Now the Spacebar isnt working at all, cause the Metal Plate is now missing.

Please help me fix my Keyboard =)
Typing on my old Cherry Stream eww :x

Sorry for my very bad English but its not my first Language.
If you have any Question ask me, thanks in advance

Someone more familiar with Cherry switches than I am may be able to give you advice specific to your situation, but if the switch is not fixable, it is quite easy to get your hands on a replacement switch and solder it in yourself.

Best to just replace the whole switch, the depth of the gap between the plates might cause issues to actuation, unless you can get it just right.

Germany... guess it doesn't make sense to offer you used ones for postage then, as new switches are easy to get. Digikey (http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?lang=de&site=DE&WT.z_homepage_link=hp_go_button&KeyWords=cherry+mx&x=0&y=0) and many other vendors carry them.

I think you want the ones marked PC MNT as opposed to PLT MNT

I think that i need sth like this:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=CH162-ND (http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=CH162-ND)

But I dont know if this metalplate is included. Also 18€ shipping is kinda expensive cause i just need 1 Switch...

18€ shipping - ouch. Wasn't aware they're shipping from the US. If you can't find a German vendor, PM me your address and I'll mail you a couple used switches for postage.

the square part is what you broke, no?

The top two smaller solderings are for the diode, and the two bigger solders below and to the left and right of the central plastic retainer are for the square-plate (lower left) and for the actuator (lower right).

(slowly getting better at taking close-ups off-hand with manual focus. Auto don' work without a macro lens. :) )

Those switches strongly remind me of ALPS.

I think this got settled in IRC. Kynell is going to Geek-Up, learn to solder, and steal his Scroll Lock switch and use it as a donor switch.

RS has them (http://de.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=0664575). €4.08 for a pack of five switches, free shipping. Their site was down when I was searching yesterday.

In the mean time, you could swap switches with another key you might not use like Scroll Lock or Pause/Break.

This is getting complicated. We just introduced another key. We'll need to set up a poll and leave it open until we have at least 75 votes on whether the Scroll Lock or Pause/Break key is less important and therefore the donor key of choice.

Kynell... just kidding! Got the soldering iron and solder yet?

First of all thanks for all replies.

I talked to Amazon where I bought it, and they send me a brand new g80-3000 for free.
Should have done that way earlier :(

Again thanks to everyone <3
