Title: Has anybody used a Pluggable Keyboard for a build?
Post by: hvontres on Mon, 13 July 2020, 22:26:34
I am just getting my feet wet in the custom keyboard hobby. I was wondering if anybody here has used one of these https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Performance-Full-Size-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B01MA6O13L/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=pluggable+keyboard&qid=1594539822&s=electronics&sr=1-3 (https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Performance-Full-Size-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B01MA6O13L/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=pluggable+keyboard&qid=1594539822&s=electronics&sr=1-3) as a starting point for a custom build. Right now I am thinking of putting in KALIH Bronze switches and possibly a set of MT3 /dev/tty keycaps.

Beware, this uses Outemu sockets, you can only use compatible Outemu switches.

You may want to look at the GMMK instead, which uses Kailh sockets which work with almost any switch. It has a few issues (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=106852.0) but nothing terrible.

maybe the durgod might be a better platform. non hotswap though for this link.
at least it uses cherry clones for the switches, you can practise soldering and desoldering as well.

Good point. Plus a bare bones GMMK is about the same price as the Plugable and I don't have to dispose of the old switches and keycaps.
