Most of the stores here don't tell you the varietal. I love a mango if it is at the perfect state of ripeness, otherwise, not so much.

And I am no good at discerning whether it will have started becoming stringy. Is there a trick to that?

I can't taste mangos unless they're in the tropics.

I feel like fruit quality in general has been going downhill since the late '90s and early '00s

Can't prove anything but fruit seems to be not as sweet, juicy, and big as it used to be. Much drier and mealier with far less taste, but longer lasting on shelves.

I swear it to be true, it cannot be all my imagination.

it seems that way sometimes yeah, i got used buying cabbage from the market but as i moved now i buy it at the super market and yeah they are smaller and have far less taste but last much longer without damage. so i guess it may also depend on where you buy it (cabbage is my most recent experience of that) as far as mango go i never even known there was multiple variety, that may explain why some brand of juices taste of soap while others taste very good

Usually stores that don't list the variety of mango only sell the common varieties anyway. I'd say specialty and ethnic markets have much better tropical produce.

If you cut your mango like this it'll cut the fibers, it's like cutting against the grain on a steak. Sometimes I still like peeling the mango and eating it whole cuz it's fun

Controversial opinion: I don’t care much for mangos.
