Title: Alien Swarm
Post by: gr1m on Mon, 19 July 2010, 19:25:12
Who tried it?

I think it's pretty cool. The top-down view is funky and the game feels too cartoonish to play seriously, but you do need to be serious to survive a level (like not shooting friendlies and crap).

Overall impression, 6/10 if it had cost me money, 8/10 because it's free.

I beat it all on hard. I almost beat insane today but at the last map we got tired of redoing it after the 4th time.

I don't play computer games.

That's too bad, you're missing out on so much.

You could buy fun games like these:
super strategy 4 pack (http://www.cdaccess.com/html/quick/superstrpr.htm) (age of empires 1 gold, majesty 1 gold, civ 2 gold, risk 2)
Hexen (http://www.cdaccess.com/html/quick/hexenpj.htm)
Lomax (http://www.cdaccess.com/html/quick/lomaxpr.htm)

I remember seeing games like lords of magic, I never found it all that fun (the graphics had that weird bulgy 256 quality that's bad), and I found the demo a lot more fun. The map editor was poorly designed and the game just felt too "busy" and misplaced. Over-implementation can ruin games too. Sometimes a simple concept works a lot better.

And I recommend a fairly fast computer for age of empires 1 -- P4s can even go slow with it on ultra huge maps & 8 players. If you play small maps with less players, 200 Mhz should be able to pull through.

Or you can play Alien Swarm, a full Source engine game, for free.

The game crashed to desktop immediately after starting for me :/

I finally got it working today by totally redownloading it from a different server... now the trouble is finding time to play it. :P

Back in the day? The games still have a minor cult following. I'm always up for a multiplayer match in AOE1.

With the exception of warcraft 3, most newer games just don't tickle my fancy. Especially mediocre free ones.

WC3 was released in 2002. Please use the word new properly.

That's not too old. I guess, depending on your view on "new", it could be new. I'd definitely consider it to be new.

Well if you were paying attention, you'd see they re-released the game (2008?) with a whole new installer and later patch. I have two copies of both ROC and TFT.

That doesn't make it a new game.

It's new to me (but again, if it's newer than 1995 I consider it to be "new").

Sigh... no it doesn't make it a new game, but rather an updated one.
It's still supported by the developer and receives periodic updates.

Regardless, I'm still not a fan of newer games released after 2009. Majesty 2 was a rare exception, but even then they messed up on a lot of things (the expansion will hopefully rectify that).

That doesn't affect the fact that it's an old game.

Then I really have to wonder what the **** you're doing in an Alien Swarm thread if you're not trolling.
