Title: Rosewill RK-9000 (MX Blues) down to $70, free shipping
Post by: muchadoaboutnothing on Wed, 21 July 2010, 12:20:45
EDIT 5: Item is back in stock, but the promo code is expired. ChiefValue is looking into it and may extend the promo code for the keyboard.

On ChiefValue (http://www.chiefvalue.com/product/productdetails.aspx?submit=&item=CE00158448010060&ATTKeyboard).

Newegg owns Chiefvalue. RMA address is the same and the mail headers show outgoing mail going through mx10.newegg.com.

I don't see any diodes in there, although it could be the angle:

I'm on the fence. If it's not NKRO that's grounds for an RMA. If it is NKRO it seems to be a very good price.

If there's some horrible build quality issue I could eat the restocking fee and return shipping.

They don't have to use diodes with leads. Instead, they could very well use surface mount components (you'd have to expose the PCB to be sure).

I may be that guinea pig. If it doesn't have NKRO I'd RMA it. If they wouldn't take an RMA (or expected me to ship back on my dime because the product was falsely advertised) I'd chargeback.

EDIT: Product is not currently on the site, but the error page says it could be due to catalog updates. On Newegg.com it was delisted Monday and relisted Tuesday without explanation.

EDIT 2: Delisted from Newegg again too. Weirdness.

So ChiefValue called back. They confirmed the coupon wasn't there when it should have been (the same coupon code also took $30 off a Wacom item, but it didn't work on that) and she didn't have a reason why the RK-9000 was delisted. Could be back, might be gone forever (find it hard to believe. Newegg has to have some, they'd close them out.)

Shame, because I'd seriously consider getting one at that price.

Especially if the "free shipping" includes shipping to Europe.

Again, Newegg delisted it Monday, relisted it Tuesday, and delisted again it Wednesday (today). So it could pop back up tomorrow...

Nope. (http://www.chiefvalue.com/customerservice-_-faqdetail.cv_-_module--5)

We are sorry. ChiefValue.com does not ship internationally. At this time. We only ship within the United States and Puerto Rico.

Makes sense, since Newegg owns Chiefvalue and they have the exact same shipping policy.

If these 'boards are made by Costar, they use surface mount diodes, so you won't see them looking down into the switch.

Newegg deactivated the item instead of marking it OOS, which may indicate a problem with the board or its stock.

Or it could be an employee ****ing things up. Who knows.

Rosewill is an odd duck of a company. Much of their budget peripheral line is typical cheap crap, but they also make stuff built from the ground up for quality, intentionally not cutting corners found cut in big name brands. And then they sell it for 20% less. Do not underestimate this company.

If they put their mind to making a good mechanical board, I wouldn't be surprised if it was as high quality as any of the premiums, at a lower price with a few improvements included almost as an insult. The braided cable and laser etched caps is typical Rosewill behavior. They knew their competition and they're taking aim. Looking at it now, it wouldn't surprise me if it were essentially a Filco with a better cable, fancy red chassis and lasered keys. This would make it a giant-killer out of the gate. Then again it could be a piece of garbage. (plus, no clue as to rollover ability)

Judging by design and construction alone, the $15 RK7300 is the highest quality keyboard I've ever used that was under $80. However, their mice are the worst pieces of **** ever made.

Edit: The Rosewill website: N-Key rollover: 104 Key could press at the same time, avoid any key jamming (Only PS2 mode, at USB Mode 6-key rollover)

It's probably a Costar CST-104 (http://www.costar.com.tw/products01/info.php?p_id=45&p_sid=32), which if I'm not mistaken, is the same company that Diatec uses for the Filco brand.

The keycaps are different.  Back Space vs Backspace,  CapsLock vs Caps Lock.

They have different runs for keycaps at least.

No way to know unless you crack them open and look at the insides if they have the same manufacturer

The CST 104 does look like the Filco, pretty close appearance.

"Unavailable" again.

This seems very strange.  Are they just getting a few in at a time?  Beyond how odd that would be, why does this new product from a house brand keep going "unavailable" instead of "out of stock"?  One would not expect it to be in any danger of getting discontinued or having some kind of unreasonably long restocking time.

I have to wonder if maybe they are only selling small quantities in fits and starts to avoid getting dinged by large numbers of returns in case there are quality control issues.  But are there really so many people lined up to buy these that doing this would make a big difference?

I think Ripster's theory is likely - ABS/Newegg wanted an Alienware-esque brand name, but with an asian ring to it, and what better way to accomplish that than rose + Roswell = Rosewill?

Up until a year or two ago the ASUS slogan was "Rock Solid - Heart Touching".  I can only guess that these things go over better in the east...

All keyboards are a bit different (although I'd love for someone to crack open one of these and see if is a Costar CST-104).

I'm 99% sure [strike]it is a CST-104[/strike] (I'm revising this statement to a "Costar board" retroactively). Even the box is the same as the Filco (although Rosewill branded), it even has the same split to put the cable under the spot where the PS/2 adapter would be if Rosewill wasn't ridiculously cheap.

That, and owning an ABS M1 and a Filco Majestouch Tactile Touch NKRO Otaku & A Filco Majestouch Tactile Touch makes me pretty sure. The bodies are identical.

EDIT: The Filco has that hard plastic cover over it, and the Rosewill comes in one of those foam bags. That's the only significant packaging difference (other than the branding) that I can see. Other than the fact that Diatec's packing is kind of glossy and Rosewill went for matte.

I think if keyboard manufacturers can get close to $70, then they'll be hitting critical mass on sales.  $100 is hard to justify.

By the way, from those pictures it looks to me like the underside of the case is identical to the ABS M1.

Either way, even if it's not a CST-104 I'm willing to bet it's a Costar board.

Just ordered one of these. Right now it's at $84 + shipping, but you can get a free gaming headset (meh).
The race is on for which one will show up first. This one or my Filco Majestouch Tactile Touch from elitekeyboards. Which I just noticed updated their backorder date to Nov 10th.

When I have them both I will have to see which I like better. The Rosewill with the cherry blues or the Filco with the cherry browns.

Almost certainly the RK-9000. It's in stock and Newegg ships with UPS 3 Day Select (FedEx Ground is not guaranteed within 3 days). EliteKeyboards probably won't ship until tomorrow at the earliest and unless you're in CA and he does ship tomorrow (which would end up in a tie), Newegg has it in stock and has a ton of UPS trucks doing pickup runs into the night. Plus they have an Edison, NJ facility, although I can't tell you if they have them there (the easy way is to check the last step of Newegg's checkout; if all items will ship from the same warehouse; "estimated 1 day" or "estimated 2 day" with UPS 3 Day select on the east coast means Edison).

Chiefvalue was $3 less with free UPS 3 Day Select shipping but I'm pretty sure the coupon expired. Even so, you may value the gaming headset over $8 shipping.

EDIT: Checked Newegg, it's in Edison. East coasters should get it within 1-2 days:

I have just bought.  I'm bitterly disappointed with the two Adesso keyboards with Cherry Blues that I bought so I'm going to give Cherry Blue switches one more try.  That's kinda why I ordered my Das Keyboard in Cherry Brown flavor.  The ultra-slim form factor of the ABS M1 really appeals to me and since the RK-9000 shares that same slim size I think I'll really like it.

Yeah, I could take or leave the hedset and now that I look at the actual entry on cheifvalue instad of google shopping ( it shows it at the full $99 + shipping) I might have gone with them. Doesn't really matter in the end I suppose it's only a few bucks difference and I get a headset this way.

Any way I look at it though I get a keyboard this week which is exciting.

Unusual. This was not the case in the past. In fact, even when I know an item is in Edison (Newegg's estimation on the last stage of checkout), every time I've ordered from Chiefvalue (cheaper price), it had shipped from CA.

CV used to claim to be separate from Newegg, but the SSL cert is signed to Newegg Inc. (it's extended validation) so clearly this doesn't fly. They say they share a warehouse.

Interestingly enough, mail from Chiefvalue customer service bounces off of  S7CEX03.buyabs.corp before hitting smtp01.newegg.com.

Anyhow, logically my RK-9000 should have shipped from NJ (closest), but it didn't.

The main problem is that it has to stay that price. At $99.99 plus shipping (Chiefvalue doesn't have it now)...

The key finish on Filcos is superb, in my opinion. Logo's better (if you care). Tenkeyless option. Better support for sure.

At $72 it was a no brainer but at $100+ the decision becomes more difficult.

Tis a shame, at the $85 price, it seems to be quite the value. I'll eventually end up getting a Tenkeyless Filco for LANs and such, but the RK-9000 has settled my itch for the time being with no short comings that I am aware of (unlike the Adesso)

I bought this keyboard sometime ago and I really like but I am still getting used to it.

It's my first mechanical keyboard so I can't compare it to anything else but it is very heavy and built really well.

My biggest problem, which I think is just user error is that I "double space" a lot. Usually once or twice in something as long as this. I think it's just because of my repeat delay or something not the keyboard, sometimes I hit space in the middle of words too, so I  guess it's my thumb still not used to the keyboard. The space bar seems to activate higher than any other key though.

I've had a few random double spaces as well when typing on this keyboard. Not sure if it is just me still adjusting for the spacebar or not, since I came from the land of the sketchy membrane keyboards.

Think might just be the angle my thumb connects with it perhaps?

I've been having this problem as well, but not so often as for it to really bother me.  I think it's that my typing technique has placed my thumb on the spacebar as a centering mechanism (much like a bassist might brace his plucking thumb against the side of the pickup on his bass guitar).  The thing is, the MX Blues are so light, I think I accidentally strike the spacebar while typing.  I can avoid the space issue by typing carefully, or by consciously keeping my thumb off the bar until I need it.

That or my RK-9000 needs to be repaired too.

I haven't had it, but I did have it initially when I first got my Filco Tactile Touch NKRO with MX Browns. Went away after a couple weeks. I attribute it to user error as a result.

MX Browns required a fractions of the force of the rubber dome keyboard I replaced.

I haven't experienced an unintended double space on my Rosewill RK-9000.  Either I was lucky with my Rosewill RK-9000 or my typing technique works well with it.

Typically most of my fingers "float" above the keys except my pinkies which lightly touch "A" and ";" to keep my hands in the right place.  When I pause for very long while typing, my fingers will lightly rest on most/all of the keys including my right thumb.  The left thumb tends to either float or lightly touch the left trackpoint button if I'm on a thinkpad style keyboard.  If one of my hands somehow gets in the wrong place, I re-center by checking for the ridges/bumps on F and J.  I have no idea if this is proper technique.  Just describing what I'm doing as I do it.

I'm sure that's more than anyone wanted to know about my typing, it's more than I knew. Hah, never thought about it before.  Was just curious how it compares to what others do.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong I should improve, but it seems to work well enough for me.

Hi

Yes I still have the double space  problem, as you can see I just did it (edit, no you cant see it because the forum ate it). Whenever I type my usual way it either happens between words or it happens right after the first letter of the next word. It almost always seems to happen on words that start with my left hand.

When I consciously try to avoid doing it, like clearing the space bar completely before I move onto the next word it doesn't happen but it slows down my typing.

I go back and forth in my mind whether or not it's my fault for the way I type or something or the keyboard, since you can really sort of "ride" the actuation point on the keys it seems. There is a point under the clickyness, but above the repeat zone where you can still actuate the key. So maybe it's sort of spring related somehow. I'll try to hit the spacebar with some conviction to see if it goes away completely.

double s pace count for this was twice between words, and twice now after an s.

I was using a $10 Lite-On membrane keyboard and before that a microsoft comfort curve.

When I try to do the test on elitekeyboards about chattering keys, I can't replicate any issues. Or I will do something like mash keys like "hsfsef sefjislfj seflisejfsef sflisefjsef sefsefjs" for 10 minutes straight, I'll never see a double space or space after the first letter of a word, but I do quite regularly end up with them in my normal typing.

That's why I am very hesitant to say there's something physically wrong with the keyboard. It's annoying that I have to hunt down double spaces every few sentences but other than that it is really great to type on.

Try to focus during your typing on your thumb action/spacebar use. The sooner you notice you're doing something wrong the sooner you can correct it.

I was wondering the same thing since I've been pimping them out to a lot of people.

If you can't get find this the good news is you can get a Filco now on Amazon thanks to the good folks at The Keyboard Company having worked something out with them. It will be Fulfillment by Amazon which means it's like a normal domestic Amazon purchase.

Otherwise it's the Leopolds at Elite Keyboards, although they currently are only tenkeyless models if that's important to you.
