Title: Gai Lan
Post by: tp4tissue on Tue, 17 November 2020, 18:11:38
A stronger-flavored Broccoli..

Perfect for stirfry, or steamed/sauced.  The stem is the best part, done right, it has a hearty serious crunch.

Most often seasoned w/ Hoisin sauce. (sweet potato starch, water, sugar, soybeans, sesame seeds, white distilled vinegar, salt, garlic, red chili peppers)

Tp4 comes from the sea,  Tp4 has witness first hand how fishsauce is made, it's kinda gross. Don' eat fish sauce. Same goes for shrimp paste.

in itself i do agree but in a spicy peanut sauce it adds something that can't be reproduced. so to me it kinda is a one trick pony but still has a place

Normal broccoli is already inedible rubbish, why would you want a stronger-flavoured version? xD

because broccoli taste of almost nothing :) if you prepare it well it can be quite good, do not simply put it in the oven and hope for the best :)

Gai lan / jie lan is really good, almost as good as jie cai (Chinese mustard greens)  :)

Seems to me that there's a lot of overlap between these vegetables and a bit of a spectrum of varieties between Chinese broccoli and mustard greens.

They are all in the Brassica genus (mustard greens)

Jie Choy /Gaichoy (Head Mustard) tastes borderline treebark medicine, for hardcore veggie enthusiasts.

There's a special way to cook Bitters,  Sugar Stir Fry + garlic + vinegar.

Works gud' w/ Bitter Melon.    It's like squash, but Ultra-bitter.

i can do bitter melon. it's great with that beef stir fry, but gai choy is just nasty hahaha. you know how they always serve it with abalone? next time i'll have the abalone part and you can keep the gai choy.
